All of the hot pot goodies bubbling away

Love the concept of hot pot - you pick your broth, you pick your items, then you pop said items in to the broth until they're cooked, at which point you fish them out and deposit them in your mouth. This place was great fun. Don't go with people you're not happy to share food with as you'll be fishing out of the same broth. Also, go with an open mind and prepared to try new foods - who knew rice cakes were so good? Or tofu skins! £15.99 gets you all you can eat over 2 hours. The service is friendly and enthusiastic, if sometimes a little disjointed. Everything we had was tasty and fresh - what more can you ask for?

Went to xiang bala hot pot for a uue and i think our party of 8 was pretty happy with our food overall; we ordered two hot pot with 4 different broth; 2 spicy and two non spicy and then we simply ordered 90%of the menu! There was a lot of food and i liked most of it! I enjoyed the sauces bar and the diversity available; one of my only downsize was for service; we reordered a few items and the waitresses either did not bring us what we asked for or brought us something that we did not ask for and we had to ask again to get it; i also wished they had a few more selections for dessert even if the red beans buns were pretty good, a sweet touch to a £16 menu would have been nice; i would definitely go back to xiang bala!

This is easily my favourite Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh. It's hugely popular with the local Chinese community who flock here every night of the week because the food is just so authentic. When I first came here it was unlike any other dining experience I've had. The reason it's got 'Hotpot' in the name is because they stick a steaming cauldron of salted broth in front of you and you then order raw ingredients which you then cook inside it. Now, surely this defeats the point of going out for a meal, but it's actually a great concept. It's a lot easier than it sounds and you just stick in whatever you think might work (they offer recommendations) and then eat it when you think it's ready. I went for chicken with lemongrass, chilli and coriander which was actually really tasty and didn't take as long as I expected for it to cook. They have a very plush wine list and some seriously stylish decor inside. However, it certainly isn't pretensious and it's a great place to come for a meal off the beaten track.

This is a cool restaurant where you get a big cooking pot and you cook the meat for however or as short as you want. You sit at a table where you put the pot on a big hob and a member of staff fills your pot up with hot boiling water. The pot is partitioned meaning that you can have your own meats being cooked separately from your companions. The concept is really cool, and I have never experienced it before, and I think it worked really well. The restaurant is really great, the choice of food is huge and you can get an all you can eat within 2 hours for £15, which is pretty decent, however, bear in mind that you have to cook your food, meaning you don't et 2 hours straight of all you can eat. The staff are more than happy to help you order and there are set ingredients that you can order if you don't feel like creating your own dish. I would love to give this place five stars, but I can't as I can't help but feel that you are some how getting ripped off by having to cook your own dinner, even though that's the whole concept!

I had heard about it, as it is open very late and feeds the drunk 2am market. What's not to like? Well, I made the mistake of eating here sober. Don't get me wrong - it was edible, but only just. I had crispy beef and my friend had sweet and sour chicken, but they both tasted exactly the same. The rice was really cold too, which I'm always wary of following a less-than-pleasant experience in Tenerife with bad rice. The shop itself is quite cool in it's own way...maybe unintentionally so but cool nevertheless. I think that going here after a night out is the best way to experience PingOn, inebriating the senses.

I think it's the late opening hours which makes Ping On such a Stockbridge institution. However, being cosy and reliable is one thing - being chewy and bland is another. Even though it's a great place to eat n' chat it's not particularly great in the food department. Everything's a bit of a strain on the jaw and really isn't the most tasty. The staff were friendly and confident and the price seemed to be lower than a take away. I will be back here but definitely not for the grub.

I have something to confess - I definitely search for "most Instagrammable restaurants" when I…read moretravel - because I love a good theme, or an ambiance that is out of this world. And let me tell you right now - Tattu lived up to the hype I read online and THEN SOME! We booked a later reservation because we were coming back from a tour that day, and we were promptly seated right when we arrived. The vibe was exactly as described - it was upscale, and very ethereal feeling. Trees uplit with purple and pink lights, black marble tables, more floral/light touches, and a dragon mural on the ceiling and also in a projected design on the far wall of the dining area. And luckily, the food was just as good as the ambiance. My friend and I both did the Evening Set Menu, that included a starter for each person and a main dish per person. They also had desserts and sides that you could add for an extra charge (we did a dessert each, and they were also amazing, but more on that later - hold your horses!). I had the Crispy Pork Belly for my starter and it was divine - nice and crispy outside with a soft middle and a delicious dipping sauce. My friend did the Duck Spring Rolls and they were so tasty as well (we split a few of each others' starter). The cherry hoisin sauce that came with the spring rolls was fantastic and a little sweet and sour at the same time. These starters were not so heavy that we didn't have room for our main courses, which I appreciated. For the entree, I had the White Miso Salmon, and the filet was so tender with a miso sauce that was to die for. The Jasmine rice that accompanied them mixed super well with everything too. My friend had the Chinese BBQ Chicken, and it was a large filet that was super flavorful (the bites I had), because it was absolutely coated in the BBQ sauce, and a very juicy filet, too. I would recommend either of the mains or starters that we picked for the evening set menu, based on our experience. As I mentioned, the dessert is not included in the set evening menu, but you can add it at the end - and my friend and I both did! She had the Asian Pear Sticky Toffee pudding, and it was so delectable - a toffee brownie type square with a large mound of buttery ice cream on top, and caramel and cinnamon to top it off. I had the Chocolate Hazelnut Pagoda, and it was a stunner! Literally a chocolate cake "dirt" on top of vanilla whipped pudding, with cherry ice cream on top and a hazelnut chocolate pagoda tree with cotton candy for the leaves. While that sounds awesome in itself, it also came with a cloud of dried ice "smoke" billowing out of it. So cool, and it definitely tuned a few heads when it arrived. So from the super cool and upscale ambiance, excellent service, and out of this world food - I definitely recommend Tattu for a special occasion, date night, or to take anyone you want to really impress!

Chinatown was open and, so it seems, rather busy. it turned out that due to the fresh cooking of the meals, there was a slight back log in the kitchen. However we were duly informed and supplied with some complimentary starters for the wait. It is well worth the wait. As I explained, they cook most of their meals from fresh and that is something you can easily taste when eating. Service is good, but as they were stretched, some people got tired of waiting and left. They missed some good food. It is not often I give good reviews on delayed service, but they handled it very well and the quality was undisputable. Give them a try one day, they may surprise you.

China Town used to be based up in Newington for many years and was my favourite lunch place ever when I worked over that way (I was kinda glad when they moved as I got quite fat!). The lady owner is really friendly and welcoming and remembers every face that used to come to her old place. I'm giving it 3 stars as the service is friendly, it's a great place to come post rugby in larger groups, I often get a takeaway on my way to the train station (mega speedy) and the food really tasty. They are happy to make anything off menu too including my favourite chicken and beansprouts. The wine selection is pretty good too. Can't beat a Chinese restaurant that sells a good Chablis!
