I will say for the UK the pricing for this restaurant was a little peculiar. I have never eaten at a Chinese restaurant anywhere in the world where rice is charged as a side, yet alone a separate and expensive charge per person although only one pot was delivered to the table. The up charging is reminiscent of the US along with the pandering for a tip. Location across from an American hotel chain may proliferate this practice.

I have taken my friends here from China and from Singapore, and they love it as well. This little cozy place gets the Asian seal of approval. The owner puts on a one man show -waiting, cooking, and running the whole operation. He is really sweet and makes the place feel so homey and inviting. The menu is great! I personally love the DanDan mein (noodles with peppery sauce) and the zhajiangmian (noodles with soybean sauce). The guo tie (fried dumplings) are also an all time favorite here. He also as some really traditional dishes like jellyfish and a fungus dish. All in all, they too are delicious. So if you haven't already figured it out, Tasty Noodle is an amazing one man show for everyone to have a glimpse into the street foods of Chinese cuisine and just absolutely tasty food.

Their menu is not extensive but has enough variety to warrant an extra few minutes to choose. There are 4 Set meal options available. And the a la carte has some nice twists on the usual Chinese Regional dishes. I started with the hot & sour soup - very clearly home made and with good taste and fillings - in my opinion could have been hotter. My main course was a Beef Udon (I normally associate this with Japanese food but as a North China dish it was very well made, tasty and not too sweet - however it did lack a bit on chili - which they very kindly provided on the side. My wife and my friend went for the shredded Peking Duck pancakes between them and it was expertly shredded at the table by our waitress. I normally don't do dessert, but I didn't want this visit to be over so I ordered the fried banana in batter.. yum yum! finished with a coffee and brandy. I work nearby and have been watching the renovations of what used to be Rainbow Arch. I went here for dinner before going to the theatre as I was in the mood for oodles of noodles! The renovations here feel like they have been started, and enough done to open the doors to the public and get some cash in the till to then do some more. The drinks stock is very basic and the waitress advised that they will be getting more options in soon. The same must be for the menus as it literally is printed on A4 paper and stapled together! Paper table cloths and no music. The waitress had chunky black plastic glasses on with no lenses in them, fine as a fashion statement or in a themed restaurant but maybe not whilst working? I opted for tofu and pineapple with noodles and my husband had chicken in a black bean sauce and fried rice. The just of it was that the mother had gone to use the bathroom and found them not up to standard and after a few shouts of environmental health this and disgusting that, lots of swearing and pulling the managers coat off him....the woman left! The manager apologised and we were all a bit dumbfounded and looking around at each other. We finished our meal and I decided out of total curiosity I had to go and check out the bathroom........wouldn't you? Ok, so when I mentioned earlier about partly renovated it is the bathrooms that are the main culprits. The gents (the door was wide open, I didn't go in) had been a little updated but a bit grubby. The ladies is right out of the 1970's with burgundy (alternative to the avocado suite) but rusty plug, taps and overflow. One sink out of order and only one cubicle had a light in it. In need of a good deep clean. Ok then I turned round to see the graffiti covered wall complete with marker pen drawings of male genitals!!! It was so bad that I burst out laughing. I can clearly see why the woman wasn't happy with them but I certainly wouldn't shout the place down. So, there you have it. Great food but needing a lot more work done to bring the decor up to standard. Undecided if I will go back?

And they had ran out. So why name yourself Shanghai dimsum restaurant? So we ordered the har-gow, steamed sea bass and some rice. We also ordered some hot water. Then we waited and waited, for such a long time. The food came, it was salty for the fish, but okay. And we asked for the bill, they charged £1.60 per person for the water. When we complained, they said their menu was not updated but given Edinburgh is a tourist city, this was an expected fee. They said that it is £1.60 for tea, but how is water the same as tea? They also wanted 10% for tips. What a rip off and dishonest restaurant. I feel the restaurant is taking advantage of tourists. Never heard of this requirement that because Edinburgh is a tourist city it need this fee. This was quite untrue as the day before we were at a Chinese restaurant and they did not charge us this fee, further they did not list the tip as a required on the bill.
