I disagree. I wake up to "that British guy," Christopher Hackett, every morning, and he makes life worth living. C-Hack 4 EVA!

It was refreshing to find a station that feels genuinely curated rather than run by some algorithm. An adult format that ranged from classics to newer tunes, which we enjoyed even if many of those new tunes were unfamiliar. For as long as we listened, no commercials and it was nice. And I see that they're "New, local and legendary music for North Texas. Commercial-free public radio." "I would Die 4 U" by Prince "Buddy Holly" by Weezer "Spooky" by Dusty Springfield "Constant Craving" by k.d. lang Fabulous tunes and if you're a grownup like me and you like good tunes, find them at 91.7. They have a whole local program that cranks out the jams. There's no real commercials on this station, just public service announcements, and underwriting announcements. The DJs are fun, and not some corporate dudes in a booth, or some AI generated voice that pipes in endless chatter. Instead, you can get a finger on the pulse of the live music scene around, and they focus on bands who are coming through and playing at venues you can visit around town. The music is much more than just some top 40 hits station, or some corporate run Belo or Clear Channel Communications stationit has the local heart and soul of the city of Dallas. If you don't like the music, give it an hour or two, and they'll have something else on later.

Tom is like the Willy Wonka of produce: Quirky, colorful, and extremely passionate about his products. High-end Dallas chefs have sourced from him for years; the storefront seems like more of a side project. On one trip two summers ago we were introduced to food curiosities we had never seen or tasted: sea beans, fiddlehead ferns, and an assortment of exotic mushrooms. We also noticed a big 55-gallon drum in the corner. Turns out it was filled with extremely fresh unfiltered Texas olive oil. Sampling it, we noticed an incredibly clean grassy flavor with a peppery finish. The slight burn in the back of the throat comes from naturally-occurring oleocanthal, which indicates freshness. Tom is so freewheeling that he didn't even have a way for us to take some olive oil home. "People usually bring in their own containers," he told us. We ended up carrying our oil out in a rinsed out juice bottle. So all summer the we drizzled the Best Dang Olive Oil Ever from the lip of a Pom Wonderful container. I'm rambling on, but F-M 1410 really is a unique spot. It's not your mother's Whole Foods and who the heck knows what their hours are... but if you get excited about food you should poke your head in to see what strange and wonderful things Tom has to offer.

When I went (early Spring) they had some yellow tomatoes, tons of fresh wild mushrooms, and a number of other things. Anyway give it a try it is right next to Jimmy's so even if it is not for you your trip is not wasted... By the way... not much signage so you may have to search a bit .

If you don't like the music on this station, don't change the channel, just give it a few hours, since each DJ has his own record collection and take on what kind of music the city of Dallas should be listening to. It goes from R&B to reggae to metal, all within a few hours. You gotta love the Cajun music show on Mondays. Tear out the knob of your radio- you don't need to ever change the station again.

My personal favorites are "Beyond Bows and Arrows" the Native American Music Show on every Sunday from 6 -8 pm, and "The Cajun Hour" on Mondays at 8 pm. They also have a great Blues shows, Reggie shows, and a fabulous Electronica show. During pledge week, the DJ can get a bit annoying asking for donations, but hey, it's public radio with no commercials, so it balances out. Next time you can't find anything decent to listen to on the radio, flip to 89.3 and see what they've got going on.
