Tom is like the Willy Wonka of produce: Quirky, colorful, and extremely passionate about his products. High-end Dallas chefs have sourced from him for years; the storefront seems like more of a side project. On one trip two summers ago we were introduced to food curiosities we had never seen or tasted: sea beans, fiddlehead ferns, and an assortment of exotic mushrooms. We also noticed a big 55-gallon drum in the corner. Turns out it was filled with extremely fresh unfiltered Texas olive oil. Sampling it, we noticed an incredibly clean grassy flavor with a peppery finish. The slight burn in the back of the throat comes from naturally-occurring oleocanthal, which indicates freshness. Tom is so freewheeling that he didn't even have a way for us to take some olive oil home. "People usually bring in their own containers," he told us. We ended up carrying our oil out in a rinsed out juice bottle. So all summer the we drizzled the Best Dang Olive Oil Ever from the lip of a Pom Wonderful container. I'm rambling on, but F-M 1410 really is a unique spot. It's not your mother's Whole Foods and who the heck knows what their hours are... but if you get excited about food you should poke your head in to see what strange and wonderful things Tom has to offer.

It was refreshing to find a station that feels genuinely curated rather than run by some algorithm. An adult format that ranged from classics to newer tunes, which we enjoyed even if many of those new tunes were unfamiliar. For as long as we listened, no commercials and it was nice. They have a whole local program that cranks out the jams. There's no real commercials on this station, just public service announcements, and underwriting announcements. The DJs are fun, and not some corporate dudes in a booth, or some AI generated voice that pipes in endless chatter. Instead, you can get a finger on the pulse of the live music scene around, and they focus on bands who are coming through and playing at venues you can visit around town. The music is much more than just some top 40 hits station, or some corporate run Belo or Clear Channel Communications stationit has the local heart and soul of the city of Dallas. If you don't like the music, give it an hour or two, and they'll have something else on later.

There are plenty of country stations across Texas, but this one seems to focus heavily on the bubble gum pop country stuff instead of the classic country. They play too much new stuff, and not enough Merle, Willie, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Hank... You know, the real country. If Achy Breaky Heart is country, I just wanna hang my head and cry. There's SO MANY commercials on this station. So Many. So Many Commercials. Blah blah blah blah. I'm gonna have some blue eyes cryin' in the rain if I have to hear another McDonald's jingle while waiting for a classic country song. This station is part of a mega conglomerate of radio stations called Cumulus Media.

There's a short list of albums that they're playing off of here, and I've yet to hear a Wille Nelson song. This station's signal is broadcast from Highland Park Village, which is where the k-VIL came from. You can tune in on to their frequency modulated radio 103.7 MHz. But they play a whole lot of commercials on this station. Constantly. More ads. I think it's annoying that they push all these podcasts. If the stuff isn't good enough to make it on the radio station, why do they think I'd wanna listen to it? The talk show stuff on here is pretty terrible. Mindless drivel. You can tune into this station on your home smart device.

I've always enjoyed the show, live traffic updates and a dose of our daily news and weather. I never viewed it as a bias station as all seemed to be represented equally. You'd be surprised how many African American listeners the show has. However, lately when I tune in on my way home from work each day, it seems the Chad Benson show has turned into the "far right wing" show and "left wing bashing" show. He's mean, rude and somewhat hurtful in some of his views. I respect his views but I don't tune in to hear him call people on the left side of the aisle idiots (one of his favorite words it seems). It's offensive and unnecessary, in my humble opinion. By the time I get home, I'm frustrated and angry because this guy has absolutely no filter. His views are divisive. I don't care who you voted for, you don't have the right to force feed your opinions on others. In our current political climate, we need to be toning down the negative rhetoric rather than adding fuel to it. I don't want to leave the show but I feel like I have no choice. Opinions are like butt holes, everyone has one but just because you think it, doesn't mean you have to say it. It seems the wholesome values that use to be exhibited on this show have gone out the window and for me, that's really sad. I realize I'm just one person and it probably won't matter one iota what I say here, but if your listeners quit listening, KRLD will have a problem at some point.
