It was a hot Texas day and I stopped in around 3ish and a there was a consistent line of people coming in even though it was past lunch. Will definitely be back next time I am in town. The meat is not as good as regular restaurant meat but, it comes at a cheaper price the high price comes from the drinks you buy. The waiter was pretty nice and gave us some complimentary vegetables. Overall though, it's qla great place to eat it also had a clean bathroom unlike other restaurants that look like that. read more

This place is amazing!! It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the food is amazing. What really sets them apart, though, is their terrific customer service. I have never felt so welcome. They really make you feel like family. My hubby had brisket and ribs and he loved every bite. He said the meat had really good smoke flavor (he's very critical of Texas bbq too). I had a baked potato and coleslaw. My favorite part of my meal was the definitely the coleslaw. It was very fresh and a little sweet. Super refreshing on a hot day! I hope the food here can transcend time and be able to evolve it seems that you can't get the meat separate without getting charged extra and sauce on the side the sauce has way too much vinegar in it causes heartburn if you eat a lot of it the preparation the love that was in this food that used to be there is not there any longer it seems like it's about the numbers and it's not about the quality over the quantity which I feel like if there was great quality to it it can get better make those changes and acclimate the recipes to your liking I know it's a family tradition but you can put your new spin on it and involve it into the way that you need to do it also take some time and some money and finances and income to invest in the facility to make it look new age it still looks like the same place after all these years invest in your business in your business will produce back to you read more

"Chip" beef sandwich not what I expected. It's hard to go too wrong with a chopped beef sandwich but this poor guy was a soggy mess. Brisket I could taste between the gristle was far from tender. Doused in sauce. Very different than the sweeter, cracked pepper sauces I prefer. Sauce was runny and vinegar based without a hint of sweet in it. I'd love to say it was simply a difference in preference but the poor soggy bun deserved more. It was my first time and I'd say that they were nice, but not friendly. I asked for a sauce on the side and lady replied, "An extra sauce? No, my reply. Just one sauce. An extra sauce? I just need one sauce on the side, please." I know I'm not from here, but I've never seen your menu and I want to taste your sauce solo and give you a fair chance. Have some patience with me. Also, you could've upsold me a piece of pie. Awesome BBQ. The bf and I stopped here on the way back to Dallas from Houston. The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is because the customer service was kind of lacking. The girl at the front counter took our order at 5:40p, then proceeded to tell us that we had to take it to go because they were closing at six. She said to come back on Tuesday when they would be open again.. None the less, the BBQ is outstanding and I would stop here again. I got the pulled pork and my bf got the brisket. There are two kinds of BBQ. Smoked BBQ that relies on a slow smoking of the meat, a decent rub and a long slow process. The other type is cooking it fast and relying on a sauce to bring moisture and flavor. Wrights is the latter. The positives: The baked beans were really good. The staff was friendly. The BBQ sauce was tasty. The negatives: There was no visible sign of a smoke ring on any of the meat. I ordered a two meat plate with brisket and turkey. The two meats were chopped up, put in the Styrofoam box (we dined in) together and then soaked in the sauce. The meat itself had almost no flavor. Outside there is a smoker, but upon further review when I left there was only a couple pieces of wood so it was confirmation to me that the meat was probably cooked in an oven. The food is very comparable to Dickeys, which should be considered an insult as far as Texas BBQ goes. read more

Wright's BBQ was popular when I was a kid growing up in Mexia, Texas in the 60s. It was a family run business that could have become a chain. The BBQ was delicious. None of that has changed except the generations running it. The BBQ is five star wonderful and I have used it as the standard to rate others as I have BBQ anywhere else. The atmosphere and ambiance are the only downside but the takeout is well worth the stop!! Once you try Wright's BBQ you will be back. Wrights new location is very convenient. I got the beef lunch plate. Comes with meat 2 sides and a drink. The food was good and the BBQ sauce they use is a bit on the spicy side. Only giving it three stars as of right now because the sweet tea was old and the portions were less than I expected. I will reevaluate the next time I go there. This is the absolute best barbecue I've ever had. Our family loves barbecue and we have tried it all over and Wright's is our favorite hands down! It is different from anyone else's. I have read reviews that said the staff wasn't friendly. We have never experienced anything but excellent and super friendly service. We live about 35 miles from Mexia and drive over just to get the barbecue. The chip beef is my favorite and husband loves it as well as the hot links. Sometimes we get a "Nuz" to eat on the way home. Wrights BBQ is the spot in Mexia Tx. A good college friend of mine was from Mexia and took me here for the first time probably 13 years back or so. Still to this day I rank Wrights BBQ right up there with some of the best that I have ever had. If you are stopping in I would recommend the Chip beef sandwich, Deuce sandwich (chip beef with sausage link) or the Mixed plate if you're really hungry. Wright's has been my favorite BBQ place in the Waco and surrounding areas for the last 20 years or so. I did not know they had a new location, and today I stopped at the original place for lunch. I ordered a pound of chopped and two sides to go. When I opened the styrofoam container I was surprised to find the meat soaking in sauce probably a half inch deep. I like their sauce but this is ridiculous. It seemed like I was dipping meat out of a tub of sauce. I'm not sure what they are trying cover up, or if they are using the sauce as extra weight. You could not even taste the meat for the sauce. The potato salad was OK but not great, beans were fine. All in all I was very disappointed in the meal. Not sure if the food would be the same at the new location as I have not tried it. read more
