Old uncomfortable beds, pillows that are literally 1.5 inches thick or about a third as should be, no hair drier in room, air conditioner would not turn on, and you have to pay separately for breakfast. Holiday Inn Express a few miles away was much nicer and less money. Not a horrible place but if you can stay somewhere else, do it.

The hotel had also rung the night before to let me know the opening times for the adjoining leisure centre as well. Pretty impressive. Good size rooms with double power points under the bedside tables. Room has a work desk and kettle with tea and coffee. The room itself was clean but the kettle and cups could have done with a little tlc. Pre book breakfast and save £4 The breakfast buffet at the hotel is probably a bit risky if you've got a heart condition but it was superb! Free wifi for just 2 gadgets which could be tricky if you are travelling with kids but there is one of those handy TV hubs in the room which is also pretty impressive for this level of hotel. I tried the famous Barnsley chop in the hotel restaurant when I arrived. If you are a southern softy like me, I would recommend sharing this winter warming dish with at least one other person.

The rooms are clean and comfortable with good televisions and shower etc. We had a room overlooking the street and it had a bit of road noise so I suggest that you ask for a room facing the other if you want a quiet night. Breakfast was absolutely awesome - with a great choice of hot dishes which were very well prepared - kippers, salmon and scrambled egg, omelette, eggs benedict as well as the classic English breakfast to say just a few - much better than I get in Hilton's or Marriotts etc!! recommend!

Summary - The dirtiest hotel I have ever stayed in! Dated…read moreyes, some furniture & fittings broken yes but it was the cleanliness that really upset and shocked me! I was told by reception on check out that the company 'Brilliant Hotels' have only just taken on the Staindrop Lodge and the pandemic has a terrible effect on the hospitality service. I appreciate these are challenges BUT the hotel SHOULD NOT be open to the public & taking bookings in its current state. Visiting Sheffield for the university open day. I booked Staindrop Lodge having read the reviews online, without taking into account the date of the reviews. Turns out they are very out-of-date. Since the hotel changed hands the older reviews definetely no longer apply! Neither does the AA 3+stars, in fact the hotel is no longer listed on the AA website. I was the only adult with 3 childern, 4+ hours from home. If I could have moved to another hotel I would have done! But despite constant checking through out our stay the nearest availablilty was in Leeds. Our visit:- We arrived late Friday evening. There were parking spaces in the car park but there was also a very large overspilling skip. I was surprised at check-in, Covid QR code display, no symptom check list or any mention of covid at all. We went to my daughter's room first, on the stairs outside the room door was a pile of dirty towels, crockery and used face mask. Inside the room, it was very warm/airless & stuffy. The toilet had a skid mark in the bowl and only one towel for two people staying two nights. Mine & my son's room was the other end of the hotel and very grubby. The overwhelming mildew smell from the bathroom (the extractor fan did not work). The kettle had water in it that was black & mouldy. In the wardrobe was balled up pair of used trousers that also contained a used pair of underpants & socks. The carpet was heavily stained and very dirty, used ear plugs around the bed. Ther toilet seat was only attcahed by one hinge, so slipped around if sat on. The cold water pressure tap barely dribbled out. The shower lever was very tempermental, so we had to keep pulling it to get the water to come out of the shower head. We also only had one towel (grey & smelly too). In both rooms the TV and kettles were lasted PAT tested in 2018. During our stay of three days I did not see any staff cleaning the rooms and/or public areas. Other than a box of disposable face masks and a tub of hand gel there was no consideration for covid safety. Yes I complained as did many other customers and continued to look for aleternative hotels in the area. We booked through Booking.com and paid at time of booking (£345). When I checked out there was finally someone on reception that looked as if he may be able to help - he did not. Other than repeat the hotel had just been taken over and they are planning a refurbishment, he just listened to my list of issues but said he was not authroised to make any refund as the booking was through Booking.com. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!! I now read that the hotel was leased by the local authority during the height of the pandemic to house homeless people. This would have been over a year ago and the hotel shows no signs of being cleaned in anyway since. The hotel cancelled our booking after we returned home so I can not leave a review on Booking.com. Wow just WOW!!!!

It didn't look very nice but when we approached there were 3 , clearly drug addicts directly outside the door. We sat for a bit and 2 of the people went into the hotel and were clearly staying there and 1 stayed outside , we felt very unsafe and decided to leave. I called the hotel to let them know that we did not feel safe to stay and certainly didn't want to come back late after our show. She said yes there were 2 people who were between homes (homeless) and was about to move on their friend from outside . Not fair for paying guests to be scared of staying in a hotel that is housing drug addicts and did not feel safe at all. I have nothing against housing homeless people., however when thu are clearly addicts then paying guests should not have to be put in a situation with them. We booked into another hotel and the travelodge Bransley have refused a refund . They did say we could gave paid extra to cancel but I didn't think for 1 minute I would be cancelling so I just paid the rate , an absolute disgrace.I would never use travelodge again and for no offer of a refund is very very poor service, shame on you

The staff is first rate, as all of them wanted to make sure you enjoyed your visit. The pool and spa are available to all guests, and it was quite refreshing to get in a few laps prior to dinner. I arrived from the States around 1000, so I waited in the Woodman Bar while I waited for my room. The staff was so nice. I had coffee and some starters while I waited. At 1300 my room was ready. I had a charming double room with a view of a farm next door. For dinner, I chose the Woodman Restaurant. I recommend making reservations as this is a local favorite, and I was lucky to get a table. I ordered the sea bass. As you can see from the picture, presentation was exquisite. The sea bass portion was quite small. I estimate the portion was around 4 ounces. The sea bass, broccoli and new potatoes were perfectly cooked. I should have ordered something other than the sea bass for £25.50. I am heading down now and have decided on the 8 ounce rib eye in the Woodman Bar for the same price. I'll update this review shortly. I am back with my updated review. You can see from the pictures that the rib eye steak dinner is a much better choice than the sea bass, if you prefer beef. While the steak was cooked perfectly, the salad, substituted for the chips, stole the show. While I thoroughly enjoyed the steak, with brown sauce (which I hope is acceptable), the salad was multi dimensional with fresh greens, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, and cooked mushrooms and tomatoes. I am on the road at least ten days per month in my volunteer capacity. I always struggle to eat healthy. The Tankersley Manor Hotel, Restaurant, and Bar makes it easy and enjoyable to keep on track. One final observation, it is clear that many local residents frequent this hotel and restaurant, and enjoy themselves immensely. That is the greatest clue that this hotel is special.

I was uncomfortable in the room. The food and service at dinner left a lot to be desired. The bartender gave it a good try to make some cocktails and that was appreciated. The breakfast buffet in the morning was better than dinner but nothing to jump up and down about.
