I took a pie in a jar class a few years back, succulent terrarium class and most recently, the pizza making class with Oliver and a few friends. These classes are great for your crafting A.D.D. as they supply most items for you to be creative and learn a new skill so you can do at home. Its almost like "adult kindergarten" - you get to channel your creative inner child and show off to your friends which is like getting that gold star on your fingerpainting project! read more

This was a great team activity for us. Right amount of difficulty, for those that were super into it, we had plenty of time to create / personalize. For those that were less stoked, could be completed relatively quickly but still authentically. We all left with our craft and also some fun memories of chatting along with eway. I organized, and the actual event organizing was super easy (they came to us, they provided all supplies, were super responsive) - thanks for making me look like a genius to my colleagues! read more

The cutest little DIY spot. I took a Terrarium making class with a few friends last week and had the best time! The teacher was awesome. She was very helpful, informative, and friendly. First, we went around and introduced ourselves. Then she began to explain the process of how to make the terrarium. After that, it was pretty much a free for all assembly line as far as actually making the terrarium. Side note - it is BYOB. Enough said. It was a little on the pricey side, $48 for the class. But it makes me happy to know that this money is going towards local artists, gardeners, people pursuing their passions. They offer a bunch of other DIY classes too! I learned about Workshop SF in the most unexpected way. To make a long story short, I was looking for some kind of woodshop class that could teach a group of 22 4th grade boys about working with tools. I came across Workshop and while I realized it wasn't exactly what I was looking for, the possibilities for MYSELF became quite evident, quite quickly. I was most excited about the artisan ice cream making workshop and convinced a foodie friend of mine to attend with me. The class I had signed up for was booked by the time he tried to get in so I attempted to reach Workshop to change my class. It took a few tries (they didn't pick up the phone and it took a few days and a few e-mails before I received a response) but they changed my class and everything was set. When I walked in, there were a number of tables set up with ice cream making materials (see the picture I uploaded) and I quickly got excited. We worked in teams of about 4 per station and it was nice to get to know other people. We received a printed handout of a couple of ice cream recipes (including olive oil with sea salt pepitas / coffee stout / watermelon lemonade) and topping recipes (chocolate and caramel with fleur de sel). We made batches of everything I just talked about and were given tastes of pre-made batches. It was so freaking good! The workshop is low key and fun. The couple we were working with seemed inexperienced in the art of cooking and they were initially confused about some of the instructions but quickly caught on so if you're a cooking n00b, feel secure in knowing that 1) there will be others like you there and 2) you can totally get the hang of this. =) I liked the class (and the ice cream and toppings) so much that a few days later, after scouring Craigslist, I purchased a beautiful ice cream machine and made a bath of olive oil with sea salt pepitas which The Husband eagerly devoured. I also bought a little carton of vanilla ice cream so he could try the chocolate and caramel sauces and he gave two thumbs up to both. I highly recommend this class to anyone who has even a passing interested in cooking. My foodie friend is an experienced cook and was worried that it would be boring, given that he's made ice cream many times before, but he thoroughly enjoyed himself and even learned a couple of new things! read more

My wife and I paid 100$ each to attend a 7 hour class on Sewing. We unfortunately had an emergency the morning of that made us 45 minutes late to our class (which was 7 hours long). When we arrived we were turned away from joining the class due to "being a distraction to the rest of the group" as we had missed the part on how to use the machine. We were not given the opportunity to listen or learn, just told to leave. Nor was there any effort to reschedule or be compassionate. Just a swift "you can't join, goodbye". And while your at it sat goodbye to your $200 A terrible experience for people who simply wanted to learn a new skill and had set aside a large chunk of time and money. Especially when missing 45 minutes of a 7 hour class! When we reached out about the lousey customer service, we were sent a message stating their late policy was on their FAQ. Which was never put on any communication when we signed up so we were unaware until we were sitting on a bench around the corner wondering what to do for 6+ hours. Stay away from this money grab! There's better classes elsewhere where they will treat you like a human. read more

I signed up with a few of my girlfriends for a "Pie in a Jar" class which was fantastic! Imagine my glee when I figured out that a mason jar is perfect for my own blueberry pie, or as a gift for loved ones. The instructor and master baker was awesome (BlackJet Bakery) and helpful in her tips and tricks. The Workshop space itself is interesting with the fruits of others' labors on display. It feels kind of like a magical workshop that you get to cut, glue, mold, tease and shape into the object of your desire. A secret space to make a mess. If you are looking for a class to learn how to sew, make a sock puppet or do some heavy metal dancerise, this is the place for you! read more

I had high hopes for my watercolor class at the Workshop, but was sadly underwhelmed by the entire experience. After searching through the Workshop's many classes, all of which seemed interesting, I chose a watercolor class because it was an art medium that I wasn't really familiar with. I was hoping to learn a few tricks and tools. I was the first to show up to the class, and was told that it was BYOB. I ran across the street and grabbed some beer, which I thought might help evoke my creative juices. The class filled up pretty quickly, with mostly groups of two or three. We first went around the table, introduced ourselves and explained why we were taking the class. I was the only one drinking, which made me feel uncomfortable. For a Friday night, the group was VERY subdued. No one really talked to each other and the teacher wasn't great at working the room. Nevertheless, we got started with our watercoloring. She passed out paper and had us choose a few colors. In what felt like 20ish minutes, the teacher went over some really basic tips, primarily focusing on creating color gradients. She also showed us how to use gold leaf which I thought was cool. After that, she told us to just work on what we learned and placed a fruit bowl on the center of the table for inspiration. By that point, I really just wanted to go home. I wasn't feeling very inspired and I didn't feel like the teacher gave us a lot to work with. I basically painted circles on my paper for a while, and then left when the class was over. For the price, I was definitely expecting to learn reasonably more. While the teacher was an very talented artist, she was not particularly great at teaching her skills to others. I don't think I will take any further classes. read more

came here for some work teambuilding/holiday party action there were 20 of us, which was about a bog of a group as they can handle, methinks we did the terrariums. fun. took less than an hour (they say it's 2...) not as many supplies as I would have liked, but what are you gonna do? the instructor was great. seems pricy at $65/pp, but this is the City so I guess that is the going rate. looking forward to checking out their other offerings read more

I love this place! It's super cozy and chill. Great place to meet new people while loosing yourself in the trill of actually making something. I went to a vertical garden class, we even made the wooden box so it was a wood working and gardening class. Two in one! The pie making class was also fun but we did not get to bake the pies as there is no fully equipped kitchen here. read more

The Workshop is one of those places in San Francisco that I wish existed in Honolulu! A haven for those with a crafty heart but short on time, the Workshop is a place where you can screen print practically anything and even take sewing classes. My boss had arranged a small get together for our team to print t-shirts and eat pizza before a long week of training. Kelly, the owner of the Workshop, was on hand to walk us through the process of screen printing. She was great at explaining how they make the screens, how to flood the ink, and most importantly, how to not completely F*%^ up your t-shirt. There were multiple workstations set-up and we printed our hearts away for two hours while drinking cocktails and eating Little Star deep-dish pizzas. We printed on magazine paper, koozies and anything else we could in order to prep for our eminent t-shirt printing. My boss had gotten Kelly to print a special screen just for our shirts so we could have matching prints. Everyone's shirts turned out amazing because we all had the same logo but each of us embellished them differently so they were all unique. My evening at the Workshop was amazing and I recommend it for a birthday party, work team building or girly crafty get together. Perhaps someone will read my review and open a shop just like it in Hawaii. I'll be waiting... read more

Somebody should have WARNED me about parking! I thought, "It's the city, I'll give myself 20 minutes to find parking. & for a 7:30PM class, it shouldn't be SO bad." Ugh, I was so wrong. I nearly started crying as I tried to find parking and I was still 10 minutes late. Aside from parking, the staff is very chill - they don't really mind the tardiness at all. I literally bought the last spot in the Rock and Roll Sewing a week ahead and I was really surprised at how fast they sell out. I now know why they sell out so fast; there was only five spots for the class - meaning, a lot of one on one work and loads of help. I learned a LOAD from the three hour class. You start by going through the anatomy of the sewing machine and it's basic uses. Then, you test run the machine and go on working onto projects. The class overall was fun and the teacher was really helpful as she gave more and more helpful tips as you make mistakes. Not only do I now know how to use the machine, I learned some useful hem techniques and how to use templates. You will definitely get your money's worth. read more

The class on making a pie in a jar was just OK, and I'll tell you why: We didn't really learn anything. The instructor pre-made the pie dough and filling. All we did was put the dough in the jars, scoop some strawberries into them, and put some more dough or crumb topping on top. That's it. We were all done within 45 minutes of what was supposed to be an hour and a half class. (And that was after starting late, eating one of the instructor's pre-made pies, and watching her do a demonstration.) We were each given an instruction sheet with the dough recipe and some tips. She did not even include the recipe for the crumb topping we used that day in class (which was delicious). So, to sum it up - it was a very very basic class. I would have preferred to have made the pie dough and filling in the workshop, and there certainly was enough time for that. That said -- the pies were delicious and I plan to make them again. ALSO - my understanding is that every class is different and I will continue to try to get into other classes because I really do think it's a cool place with lots of interesting offerings. read more

I've never sewn before and took the intro class to see if it's worth it to buy a sewing machine to alter my clothes at home (e.g., hem pants). I'm happy to say that I now feel confident in going this direction. Haley was a GREAT instructor - she gave simple and clear directions and infused the class with a sense of fun. I just attended soy candle making class and I don't recommend it if you really would like to learn how to do candles. The mixture to do candle was already ready, you don't prepare it by yourself. They just give you already prepared mix and you just add the scent. That's all! There wasn't even any recipe. I think a workshop is supposed to be more than this. read more

I took the Madmen Cocktails class with Kitty from Nopa and it was everything I hoped for. Kitty was a great instructor, from her speaking voice (talking over all the chatterboxes), to her patience, awesome skills, and her 60's ensemble! Not only did we get to make amazing classic cocktails we also got to drink them! There were plenty of finger foods and appetizers as well, to soak up the extra alcohol. Workshop is a great learning environment. I wish college could have been as cool! I am so excited that Kelly and Dave chose to open this space. It's definitely a fun way to spend an evening out, learning stuff, socializing, and drinking with cool people and making new friends. I'm looking forward to taking more classes, attending one of the movie nights as well as maybe teaching a class myself. Maybe Andean Folk Dance/Striptease or how to make macrame lingerie with llama wool. read more

Meant to post this sooner. Alas.... I didn't. As a future fashion King, I felt it necessary that I obtain a quick hands on tutorial on screen printing, to build on foundation with future triumph (see that? Spartacus-talk). This place is quite entertaining simply to walk through. Jameson lamps, a Logan's Run poster on the wall, and plenty of saws to ensure that you'll be prepared to amputate should Johnny Reb sneak over the rise and put a lead ball in your leg. Niko, our teacher, was greatly knowledgeable on the subject at hand, answered our numerous, numerous questions, and let the class have fun and make print things. I printed a polar bear holding a skill saw that looked suspiciously like a toilet seat. Go here and learn something. Or be forever lame. read more

My team at work went for a class and it was fun. It was a cocktail-making class (I'm not the target demographic) but I had fun regardless. Where it was less than a five-star experience: * There was no water to drink between cocktails. No water glasses, no pitchers, nothing. * the bathroom was really dirty Overall: the space is nice, the class that we attended was a fun way to hang out with our work team, and the people working there seem knowledgeable, etc. But that bathroom. I took a screen printing class here and the class was definitely affordable. I was a one day, 3 hour class and I wished we had more time! Nico, our friendly instructor, was nice, corky, funny and knowledgable. She taught us the whole process of screen printing, from finding out what mesh number to use to layering on images on a t-shirt. This class is very helpful if you want to learn how to screen print. Although it will be expensive to have the equipment to screen print from start to finish, Nico dropped a lot of DIY knowledge in saving money. Loved it and would come back for other classes! Screen printing class was really disappointing. I've taken many craft classes here and there and most of time, I felt like it was worth the $$ that I paid. During the screen printing class, you don't make screens. You just use ink to print the patterns they have at the studio on A4 papers. For $45 class, I honestly expected more and for that price I think they could have included one T-shirt or small tote to print but it is just A4 papers you can print/practice. Also, no guarantee that you will like any patterns they have there. The class was supposed to be 3 hrs. You spend more time cleaning the screens that you used during the class (the line was long to wait to clean it and the actual cleaning process is quite long too) than doing the printing. I got really bored within 30 min. There was a guy who just left within an hour. My friend and I left early too. read more

Sewing 101 I took this class last night and Nicole, our instructor is amazing! I live in the neighborhood and have passed by this place 100 times and wondered what went on in there. I recently bought fabric to make pillow covers- but I don't really know how to sew- I thought of hiring someone to do it, but it's pricey and my sister (an excellent seamstress who lives overseas) suggested that I invest in some lessons and learn to do it myself. I feel confident using a machine now and I look forward to taking other classes! read more

So refreshing to know that I'm not the only one who may have misplaced their green thumb one Saturday. I took the edible garden class where I was able to make my own edible herb garden for my kitchen. Equipped with a window planter, seasonal herbs, soil, and materials fit to make all your edible dreams come true. Length of the class was a little under 2 hours and the cost was about $50. Way worth it because of the pamphlet of knowledge you get which covers everything from making your own compost tea to when to harvest your herbs. After planting cilantro, basil, and chives, were given little recyclable containers to plant seeds to replant after your herbs outgrow your window planter. From the looks of the calendar schedule, this place reeks legit down to the core and can't wait to check out what else I can get into when I'm not playing mommy or wife. read more

I took the pickling class with Kelly and she's great. Well-spoken, knowledgable and funny. Have yet to taste my pickles though since you have to wait ~1 wk. However, there are some big kinks that Workshop needs to work out. The class size should probably be capped at 8 or so. We didn't have enough spices, handouts, knives or space. The jars have to be boiled for a good while so having too many people made Kelly flustered and the class ran pretty late. My friend had to leave without her jar because it hadn't cooled enough to touch. Also, the venue seems great for crafts but not for food. There is no functioning sink, only a hose so it's either powerwashing your hands with a small jet or not at all. I washed best I could but my hands stung for hours with all the jalapeños we cut. I don't think anyone washed the cutting boards because they smelled really strange. Kelly also had to prepare the brine and jars over a propane tank because the place didn't have a stove. I liked the course overall but $48 is still hefty for a class where I only came out with 2 pint jars of pickles. read more

I organized a private leather-working class for my coworkers, and we had a great experience! The instructor was great, and she walked us through each step, from dyeing the leather, to folding and stitching it into the right shape, and attaching the clasps. We learned a ton, but were still able to chat and enjoy a beer while we were taking the class. We all left with adorable and functional leather wallets, and we will be sure to come back soon! read more

This is a great place to jumpstart your creativity. It's more of a drive-thru than an actual education, so don't expect to master any one thing from taking a class for a few hours. What you can expect: Music, beer, mostly friendly people and actual time set aside to make something. I"ve taken a few classes there and wished more than once that the class size was smaller. Sometimes things feel rushed and sometimes instructors will refer you to YouTube instead of actually teaching you, but it's all affordable and all fun. In preparation for DIY-ing the flowers at my wedding, my best friend and I signed up for the floral arranging class at Workshop. There was initially a scheduling mix-up, but Lorena and Haley were incredibly accommodating when it came to finding a date that worked for us. The class itself was great. We brought a six pack of beer along with us. We learned a lot about the basics of floral arrangement and floral care - with the provided flowers and vase, we learned how to make both arrangements for a presentation bouquet and for a centerpiece. Now the arrangements I make at home are way more beautiful than they used to be (when I would just take the flowers and toss them in a vase) and last loads longer than they used to. After I told Lorena I was hoping to learn some tricks for my wedding, she gave us very specific advice about the best florists to use at the Flower Mart, when to shop, and how to select a color scheme, plus she taught us how to make boutonnieres and flower crowns. The whole experience truly exceeded our expectations. read more

I went to Danielle's Printmaking 101 class last night. Solid instruction, nice (and talented! good grief) group of participants (capped at 8), and fun background music. The Workshop's space is a bit of a hole in the wall (bathroom door closes grudgingly), but if it helps keep the overhead (and thus the prices) down, it's not such a bad thing. read more

Took the Intro embroidery class and loved it! I've been working on my own stuff and feel really comfortable doing the basics I was taught and experimenting with new stuff, too. They provided a hoop, material, embroidery floss, & needles. Basically everything you need. And since the class met over the course of 2 weeks, we had time to practice the basic stitches we learned the fist week and come back with questions. The second week we learned some fancier stitches. I'm very happy with my new found hobby! read more

I took the Shibori and Indigo Dyeing class with Kristen this past Sunday. She was so knowledgeable and chill. Her instructions were clear and simple. The atmosphere was so relaxed and friendly, everyone was chatting with each other by the end of class. All of our products were gorgeous and lovely. The sewing boot camp was super informative and fun -- you definitely get your money's worth. I knew barely anything about sewing with a machine before I got there, and left feeling confident enough to buy a machine and learn more on my own. I recommend this boot camp to anyone who wants to learn the basics. I just took the Pickling 101 class. The instructor Kelly was awesome, the space is nice and cozy, although they should have kept the class to 10/12 students. After meeting some great folks, we all walked out with two jars of whatever we wanted to pickle. I can't wait for the next class.....It was a great experience. read more

Kelly customized a series of classes into a party that was incredible. Everyone learned how to make three different whiskey cocktails. Then we sipped our new mixology successes as we crafted hair fascinators and broches. I took the Camershop SF (Demystifying your DSLR) with Kurt Manley (www.kurtmanley.com) and had a great experience. Kurt's got a ton of experience in all kinds of photography, and really helped me connect the dots between theory and practical application in taking better photos with my DSLR. Until I took this class, I didn't know what aperture, shutters speed, metering or ISO meant, and now I've got a pretty good idea what those things do for photos, and how to use them to take better pics. I'd recommend this class to anyone looking to develop as a photographer. Personally, I'm very inexperienced, so just about all of the material was new to me. If you're an intermediate level photographer (every studied it) some of the coursework might be remedial, but still a good refresher. Best for beginners, I think.
