I ran through here for the first time over the past weekend and was quite surprised by the eerie impressions left on the rock-walls. I found it fascinating and took a few photos before we moved on. Later on, I looked up and read a bit about the place. Turns out, although the dates carved deeply into the rocks are in the mid to late 1800s, they were actually carved in the mid-1900s by a son-in-law of Worden's. The land belonged to the Worden family prior to passing down to him. He carved several detailed faces, names, a schooner, a bible and a cross, among other things often so deep into the rocks it's hard to imagine them ever washing away. I admit, at first it appears to me just some modern graffiti, but no graffito of this day-and-age is going to spend that much time cutting rock when they can tag tons of train cars with spray paint in the same amount of time. The place fits neatly into the geology of the area which has been all around surprising to me ever since I moved here. The further surprise came when I found out these rocks were primarily cut from water erosion in an ancient inland sea, rather than the glaciation I expected. It kinda makes sense, with more rounded edges and undersides of overhangs. Definitely worth a hike, as is the entirety of Hinckley's.

Hinckley offers as diverse a range of activities and some of the best view as any other park in the area. Most people know Hinckley from the annual Buzzard festival, the nice lake and the awesome ledges, but that is just scratching the surface. With the newly renovated dam and the lake refilled Hinckley Reservation is once again at its peak. I have often hiked at Hinckley, my most recent hike started at the Top of the Ledges picnic area, went down through the Ledges, along the North side of the Hinckley Lake Loop, on the Bridal Trails and then the Buckeye Trail back through the Ledges. If you are looking for some interesting hiking the Bridal Trails provide some nice variety from open fields, stream crossings, hills and narrow winding trails. Whipp's Ledges are some of the most impressive you will see; they provide multiple routes and views, plus there is actual rock climbing allowed. Less well known are Worden's Ledges on the other side of the park which while smaller still are lots of fun and they have some interesting carvings that are well worth visiting. The Lake provides the opportunity for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. There is a nice boathouse where you can rent a boat at reasonable rate, and while not terribly challenging, the lake is picturesque and getting out on the water is always a great time. Although I have never taken advantage at the bottom of the dam there is a nice beach and swimming area. Hinckley Reservation is a wonderful asset and a great way to get outside and enjoy yourself. This is a large park with plenty to do and see. Never been disappointed with a visit here.

The dam is a lot better after the reconstruction. Nice 3 mile walk around the lake. Concession…read morestand open during the summer.

The O'Neil Woods loop is a nice shorter moderate hike; good elevation change, some steeper portions and a variety of scenery. Starting at the parking lot and taking the trail at the far end of the lot you will have a fairly easy descent on a wider trail through the woods. After you cross the road you will have some nice views of the river and then the big red barn. Crossing back over the road is a narrower trail with steep switchbacks that will get your blood pumping as you climb about 300 vertical feet. At the top you will stay with the narrow trail through the woods and cross a bridge before completing the loop. Around the parking lot is a number of benches and picnic tables, including a picnic area overlooking a nice little gorge; looks like a very nice place to grab some food or just hang out. O'Neil Woods is not huge, there is just one trail that actually presents a nice challenge. Well worth a visit if you are looking for a shorter hike that will still give you a good workout.
