This place has a great Addams Family vibe -- very gothic-Victorian. There are several different houses on the same street which are part of the B&B, and we stayed in the main one, a 1920s Tudor-style mansion which was once one of the most valuable homes in Topeka. The living room was designed after a Tudor-era library, with lots of dark carved woodwork and stained-glass windows. The owner seems to be on a mission to save her block of this urban neighborhood in Topeka which is safe but has seen better days. As the rundown-but-beautiful houses on her block go on the market, she snaps them up, renovates them, and adds them to her little mini-village of bed-and-breakfast venues. She's a one-woman neighborhood rehabilitation program and has obviously made this her life's work, down to collecting decorative items to lovingly put her idiosyncratic touch on every square inch. Our room -- The Chester, named after the original owner of the mansion, Chester Woodward -- included a private full bath and a small gardenlike private rooftop deck with a hot tub. The room is cozy rather than spacious but very comfortable. Every night the owner brings out a homemade dessert (the night we were there it was a lemon-cheese ball to be spread on homemade sugar cookies the way you'd spread a savory cheese ball on crackers -- I'm so stealing this idea) and her morning breakfasts are lavish. She checked our convenience for breakfast and was clearly prepared to serve earlier or later depending on our needs. She was also happy to give us pointers on where to eat and what to see in Topeka. The Saturday night we were there she'd arranged for a couples' massage team to offer massages for guests. We didn't take advantage of it but other guests were. I would definitely stay here again if I were in Topeka overnight. read more

This place is magical! I was married here October 2012 and just spent our first anniversary here this last week. Elizabeth (owner) is so personable and warm. You will enjoy talking with her. The food is simply amazing! We stayed in the room, The Chester. Fun theme. Clean, comfortable king sized bed, prestine hot tub. The Chapel always has light music on. So romantic. This place was perfect for a wedding. I'm not sure about the review where someone mentions the home is unkept and dusty?! And of course there are pictures of other couples up! It's the people who have been married there! Some people just don't understand a bed and breakfast! Highly recc'd everything about this place! Plan to stay here for many more anniversaries! read more

I went to a wedding here. This place has great potential but it's got a long way to go. First, it's not clean inside or out. Inside, there was a fine layer of dust over everything. All around the house there was stuff (things-to-do-flyers for local entertainment, fake flowers, dust) everywhere--to the point where you couldn't tell what (fresh) flowers were provided by the family hosting the wedding and which were just already there. It was not complementary to the bride and groom's flower plan. Put your fake flowers away if people are spending money on flowers for their wedding day!! It was summer and there were 20 coats hanging on the coat rack as well as SEVERAL framed photos of OTHER couples sort of stuffed into the stairwell, balanced against the walls, etc. Put those things away--especially when hosting a wedding. Outside, the back porch furniture was covered in pet hair and the glass tables had a nice layer of dirt. The yard is overgrown, like Great Expectations! This house has the potential to be a great place...but it was sort of grimey. Another thing: there is a butler there who is very creepy. He kept asking my cousin and me our names several times and when I tried to take something to one of the rooms where some guests were staying he insisted on escorting me and standing in the doorway until I was finished delivering my things. There were people changing and he stood there with the door wide open! Then he told me the tag on my dress was sticking out and asked me if I would like him to tuck it in for me! No, thanks! I will handle that myself. The owner provided good service but seemed kind of rude and judgemental. Her tone was like: "it's my way or the highway!!" That was sort of awkward. The service was good overall...but seriously this place has the potential to be MUCH better and it the atmosphere gave me the heebie jeebies. read more

Avoid. The lady who runs it is unpleasant. The bed and breakfast is out of her home, which is lovely. However, be prepared to openly looked down upon and ideas mocked is you ask such absurd questions such as "Can I decorate for my wedding?" or "Can we bring in outside food?" I could only use them for food, but she was unwilling to do vegetarian. Nor could I bring in food for my 4 year old nephew who has severe food allergies. My decorations would be tacky, which I assume she judged by hearing about our food, as we didn't share what they were. Also, extremely over priced. You'll be happier elsewhere. read more
