The five-course meal, crafted by a remarkably talented chef using a variety of techniques from their farm, was beautifully executed in a surreal indoor-outdoor setting. Every dish was spectacular, and the beverage pairings were creative and perfectly curated. Our guests from Leawood, Kansas said they would gladly make the drive back anytime to experience another one of these magical culinary evenings.

We arrived on the farm (after our Ford GPS took us a wonky route along a few miles of dirt road--so make sure you stay on paved roads and you won't have trouble--I was told by Kristin, our host and one of the owners, that Google Maps has no problem). I have to share our experience in detail because I feel we discovered a new must-visit experience in the KC area! We arrived at the 30-acre farm, parked in the field, and were greeted by our server who welcomed us warmly and offered us an arrival cocktail to sip while we explored the truly lovely grounds, pond, and nearby goats. After our leisurely stroll, we returned to the dining pavilion and found our seats at the gorgeous (and massive!) live-edge dining table along with a menu specifically for this weekend. Our gracious host Kristen and server brought out our first drink pairing, a minted lime seltzer that was refreshing and light. Our first course arrived--Blue Jade cornbread with arugula, sweet pea salad, and chicken liver paté. The cornbread was unlike any I had before and was absolutely delicious. The sweet pea salad was literally bursting with flavor the peas were so fresh and the chicken liver paté out of this world. Such an interesting flavor profile and combination. The next beverage pairing arrived a short time later as we enjoyed the perfect evening, a blackberry purple basil shrub. This drink was also delicious and refreshing (and save that blackberry for last--what a treat!). The Mangalista pig, we were told, is the "wagyu of pork" and the crisp, tasty, marbled pork chop was excellent. It was served with a beet "kimchi" with fennel root and a sheep cheese dumpling that was creamy and flavorful. Finally, our coffees were served and a dessert of yellow squash cake, lemon honey ice cream with mulberry compote was brought to us. Again, the dish was original, delicious, and a perfect ending to our meal. We can't wait to come back and have try a new menu in the future. Such a perfect evening and the chef has such an exciting vision for hyper-local farm-to-table flavors and dishes.

I texted Tyler Stewart about a meal for my family. He asked me what time worked for me and had it ready!! After a long day with the kids, it was wonderful to be able to pick up a meal from a place that I knew was taking the precautions to be clean and sanitary. Tyler even carried the food out to my car for me. Now for the food... I ordered bbq. He gave us pulled pork, Mac and cheese, beans and a salad, as requested. They even gave us brownies! I consider myself a "snob" when it comes to Mac and cheese because I'm basic and it's one of my favorites. Southern accents is Top 2 for sure!!! Next to my mommas ;). The food was delicious to say the least. It brings tears to my eyes that my local lawrence community is so caring and is taking care of each other.

Engroff's was able to seamlessly and extremely professionally cater my event at the very last minute. Their event coordinator was able to meet with me Monday (after I contacted them Friday afternoon) at the venue, offer multiple suggestions about the menu, we set a menu...and when I mentioned I was hosting ANOTHER event the following day (May 1st), informed me they would also be able to cater that event was well, if I was interested. Both events went off without a hitch and after receiving multiple compliments about the food (and Engroff's being extremely professional and understanding about how stressed I was due to the first caterer falling thru), are now my caterer of choice, bar none. I can not say enough about Engroff's and how easy they were to work with. If you are needing a caterer in the Topeka area, please contact Engroff's first; you won't be disappointed!

The living room was designed after a Tudor-era library, with lots of dark carved woodwork and stained-glass windows. The owner seems to be on a mission to save her block of this urban neighborhood in Topeka which is safe but has seen better days. As the rundown-but-beautiful houses on her block go on the market, she snaps them up, renovates them, and adds them to her little mini-village of bed-and-breakfast venues. She's a one-woman neighborhood rehabilitation program and has obviously made this her life's work, down to collecting decorative items to lovingly put her idiosyncratic touch on every square inch. Our room -- The Chester, named after the original owner of the mansion, Chester Woodward -- included a private full bath and a small gardenlike private rooftop deck with a hot tub. The room is cozy rather than spacious but very comfortable. Every night the owner brings out a homemade dessert (the night we were there it was a lemon-cheese ball to be spread on homemade sugar cookies the way you'd spread a savory cheese ball on crackers -- I'm so stealing this idea) and her morning breakfasts are lavish. She checked our convenience for breakfast and was clearly prepared to serve earlier or later depending on our needs. She was also happy to give us pointers on where to eat and what to see in Topeka. The Saturday night we were there she'd arranged for a couples' massage team to offer massages for guests. We didn't take advantage of it but other guests were. I would definitely stay here again if I were in Topeka overnight.

I got the smaller plate with potato salad. The brisket was "shredded" which is not how I am used to on a BBQ brisket sandwich. It was really dry and honestly didn't have much of a smoked flavor. I put sauce on it, but didn't really care for the taste of that either. I would describe it as sweet Heinz 57 sauce. The potato salad was nothing exceptional but tasted fine. Same with my husband's cheesy potatoes. However the BBQ beans were exceptional! Probably some of the best I have ever had. They were rich and sweet with chunks of meat. I wish I had ordered a plate of those! Overall, I wouldn't really recommend Black Dog Bar B Que. But if you go, be sure you order the beans!
