They create templates and cut the wood specifically for the project you chose. It's located in a sort of strip mall, so there's plenty of parking. When we entered, we were quickly greeted, signed in, and directed to our table. Before I forget, this is a BYOB establishment. We brought a bottle of wine and glasses. What we didn't know was that you can also bring food. Had we known, we would have brought snacks. Good to know for next time. You might feel overwhelmed when you first arrive, as my partner did, but you'll get help along the way. I chose a clock as my project, and she chose a tray. You'll start with sanding, then distressing the wood (take your time with that part, I wish I'd have done more of that), then staining, then it's time for the template. That part can take some time, depending on the project you chose. Once the template is laid out, you start painting. So many decisions to be made!! It's a great date night event or with a group! Good times. We'll definitely be back. The entire staff was very helpful, especially Lupe!

As someone who has been throwing pots for a few years, I'm definitely eyeing the the Studio Artists which is designed for independent ceramicists. The studio space itself is pretty large and Kendra keeps a large supply of clay, tools, and other items you'll need for throwing pots or hand building. Even more importantly, pots get fired pretty quickly so you're not waiting weeks to finally get to your batch of pots that need to be glazed, etc. Kendra also works with you on honing in on any techniques if you've got the basics down, or helping you master the foundational skills. Given the pottery studios in the DMV are always full and have waitlists, it was very exciting to see this new studio open up and actually get a spot without wondering if I'll ever get a chance to take a class!

Frida and Diego together again in Washington, DC…read more You are greeted by people beautifully dressed, some in flower crowns and traditional peasant Mexican dress. Walk through a lovely curtain adored with the faces of the famed couple, Frida and Diego. This is made with one of Frida's paintings. The space is decorated like Frida's home which is now a museum, La Casa Azul in Mexico. It has blue walls, with candles, skulls, Mexican tapestry, and aesthetics. Certain areas are devoted to Diego's murals. In life Diego was more famous but in death Frida May have surpassed him in fame. One of the rooms is a recreation of a traditional Mexican kitchen, with the sounds, pot and pans of such a place. You enjoy all these various rooms to finally arrive at the Main Hall, filled with projections of the life's work of Diego and Frida and comfortable seating. It takes about 30 or more minutes to enjoy this artistic show of their work. Afterwards, you enter a room with a recreation of one of Frida's big work of art, you get to color it in with markers, as it is one a white board. Also you can take pictures with a Frida and Diego cut-out. Next, you enter the "Cantina" filled with lovely Mexican paper decorations. If you pay for the VIP experience, you get to enjoy an interactive experience with Frida and Diego. Then you get to enjoy the shop where you can buy books, flower crowns and other items Frida and Diego related. It was a great experience and I'm glad it finally opened.

I think what I liked the most was that we first went through several rooms that contained information about Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera. I felt like I already knew quite a bit about them, but I definitely learned more. I never really thought about the fact, for example, that their approach to art was dramatically different. Rivera is known for works that are huge in scale, such as murals about major issues; Kahlo created highly personal works that were very personal, such as small self-portraits. Only after going through these rooms did we get to the immersive area. It was large & engaging. The music & sound added a lot to the experience.

Want to enjoy an evening of professional theatre? Bet you didn't know that you don't have to…read moretravel to DC, deal with the parking or metro mess or drop $50 plus to get it. Look no further than Venus Theatre - located in Laurel MD off of Main Street. At Venus, Deb Randall, the artistic director, produces quality cutting-edge shows with professional actors and actresses. Deb is crazy creative and intelligent; you might like the "out of the box" way that she directs the plays. I saw Homokay's Medea here and she had the maid and the gardener from the show giving cookies and punch to the audience; it was a fun show. The seats up front and on the sides are more comfy than the taller seats in the middle, but it is a small theatre, so first come first served. Be sure to get there early! There is a nice concessions table with snacks and drinks just in case you didn't get a chance to eat before the show. I should mention that the restrooms are backstage, so they can't be accessed during the show depending on the stage set-up, so be prepared! Oh, did I mention that the tickets are $20? You can't get into see live theatre, barely a couple of movie tickets for that price around here. Check the website for pay-what-you-can preview days to get a first look at the play in progress. This is a very fun and casual theatre; one you likely didn't know was right around the corner from you. If you live in the area, especially, you should go and check it out: www.venustheatre.org
