I adore Liebling - not just for its name, but also its Spritzers! Quick German lesson: 'Liebling'…read moreis about as close as German comes to the English word 'darling.' The interior of this place looks like a mish-mash of furniture bought from random flea markets and secondhand stores; each chair and table is different from the others. The wall that looks like it's been scratched away and chairs stuck on the walls all add to Liebling's edgy charm. It's so very easy to overlook Liebling during the day as it's tucked away on a small side street off of much busier Mariahilferstrasse. But don't be fooled: it fills up quickly come night time and especially on Fridays and Saturdays. During the warmer months, they have a little parklet set up right outside for drinking al fresco. When I say they fill up quickly, they truly do! This holds especially true in December. What I love about Liebling are their Spritzers. A spritzer is basically an alcoholic drink made of white wine and sparkling mineral water. It is such an Austrian thing and it's one of my favourite things about living in Vienna! It is the perfect thirst-quencher in the summer and the perfect thing to order again and again when hanging out with friends. It's easy to order one after another when it's just SO good. Liebling has a wide array of different spritzers, at least 10 different ones! Each one is between €3-4. While they have the classically traditional G'spritzter (White Wine Spritzer), which I find no fault in, my favourite has to be the Rosenspritzer (Rose Spritzer). It's a beautiful drink laden with rose petals for an extra fancy touch. Other spritzers they have include: ginger, blood orange and thyme, red grapefruit and basil, violet flowers, rhubarb, and more! I love all the ones I've tried here. If only spritzers were more of a thing here in SoCal. These are my favourite things to drink when I just wanna chill with friends and don't want to get a hangover. I also like to think that I'm getting much-needed hydration from the mineral water in each and every spritzer. Built-in hydration, for the win! One thing I dislike about Liebling is how utterly smokey it is in the bar. It is Europe after all and bars in large part allow smoking all over Vienna. There are only a few bars that are non-smoking, unfortunately. So, expect to smell cigarette smoke the entire time you're in here. On our trip to Vienna, my fiance and I looked up some places that would be good to try traditional Viennese cuisine. Wratschko popped up on a list and it was even mentioned that Anthony Bourdain came by here so we figured it's worth the try. So.... THE FOOD. On our first night, we ordered the minced meatballs with mashed potatoes and the chicken in a chanterelle sauce with dumpling. The chicken was cooked completely through, yet still remained juicy and tender. The sauce was a tad saltier than i may have preferred, but the whole dish was still unbelievable. The meatballs were dense and savory, and the well flavored with this dish's own unique sauce. The starchy sides came exactly as they should in texture and flavor (okay, actually the mashed potatoes were nothing like I'd ever tasted anywhere else - creamy, fluffy, but also had chunks of diced potato. Both times we got them, they tasted like this and it was incredible), and even the steamed vegetables that seemingly garnished the plate only added to the dishes' flavor profiles. These veggies kept their natural colors as overcooked ones tend to, and each night was crisp and bright, contrasting the denser flavors of the meats and starches. This meal was so good, we had to come back on our last night in Vienna. On this second visit, which I am writing as I eat, we ordered the boiled beef with pumpkin oil as a starter (similar to a Tafelspitz) the minced meatballs again (fiance wanted to repeat that) and the roasted lamb. The boiled beef was very interesting. It tasted almost like a Vietnamese beef salad, except with more European flavors. The pumpkin oil was mixed with a hint of balsamic and the herbaceous aroma of parsley pierced through just enough with each bite of beef, spiraled radicchio, and diced peppers. The roasted lamb would be #3 if I had to rank all the main dishes we've tried, but nonetheless cooked perfectly, and it's only fault is that I feel like I could've had the same dish at a different restaurant. Finally on this second visit, we ordered the pancakes with apricot jam as a dessert to share. It's more of a thick crepe than a pancake. Fluffy, with some sugary charred ends, balanced with the tartness of the jam, and dusted over with some powdered sugar. Delicious. As for environment, the restaurant has a cozy, old-timey interior with candlelit tables and wooden walls. The downside of the inside is that it's not well-ventilated and the kitchen smoke billows a bit through. You'll leave smelling like a bit of grease. They do have outdoor seating though so if you can't stand it, wait for the outside? There is one server/bartender/busgirl and one chef working this whole restaurant. This place is just out of this world. I will miss this restaurant more than the whole rest of Vienna.

Then, for entrees, tried the paprika chicken and the boiled beef with hash brown and apple horseradish and creamy chive sauces on the side. Don't be fooled by deceptively basic sounding descriptions -- there was not a streak of sauce or a single crumb left on all the plates ordered. That I haven't reviewed this pub and eatery before has just always been a shortage of time because I'm usually hosting out-of-town guests when I'm dining at Das Campus. When I go to Das Campus with friends, we all order the same thing - Flammkuchen. (In Alsatian - Flammekueche ... in French Tarte Flambée.) Why? Because it's the best Flammkuchen I've ever eaten outside Strasbourg and Alsace. One of the chefs surely had to train in Alsace to know how to prepare Flammkuchen with such care. The crème fraiche and caramelized onions and bacon strips are baked in the oven to perfection. (Hey, who needs pizza anyway?) And even if there is not the cool system of reordering that is a fun part of countryside Alsatian Flammekueche restaurants, I still very much appreciate the authenticity of this Tarte Flambée. Now in addition to all this - Das Campus has Vienna's largest flavored beer selection. You mix it yourself. I especially love the maracuja beer. The atmosphere is laid back, the architecture interesting (the men's toilets are really cool - maybe the ladies toilets are too but I've never been in them!) As long as Das Campus exists in Vienna and in so far as they continue to serve up genuine Flammkuchen, I'll be back!!
