The Apple Pie at Winkel 43 is a must try in Amsterdam. It was my wife and I's first stop after arriving in the city during our most recent trip. We loved it so much we had to visit a second time before leaving. The pie is made fresh and you can watch them make the pies while you are at the restaurant. Fresh warm buttery apples were surrounded by a crumbly ginger cookie-like crust. The pie was not too sweet and didn't have overly sugary syrup inside. This is the best Apple Pie I have ever had. The restaurant also has an extensive breakfast and lunch menu so we also tried the Brioche Cheese Souffle. A soft toasted bun was filled with crisp fried cheese with a gooey inside, crisp lettuce, and tangy pickles.
It was great to experience the apple pie but it doesn't taste particularly different than any other apple pies I've tried. Given all the hype I guess I expected more! Is it a bad pie? Not at all! Does it live up to the hype? Also no. Should you still try it? Of course! But I wouldn't go out of my way to go there unless you are in the area! The staff here are nice and friendly so that was a plus!
The apple pie was divine! Honestly the perfect stop after spending the day exploring town. It's a pretty busy spot and seating is first come first serve. Find a table, preferably outdoors. Inside is fine but I found it to feel crowded, busy and loud. The service was great although be patient. Their staff works diligently and are often faced with impatient tourists. Overall a great experience and would definitely go back for the pie!
Winkel 43 is the poster child for modern day marketing success--they've managed to land on every food blog, IG/TikTok/youtube travel and tourist page about Amsterdam; they're written up everywhere. To avoid FOMO, I found myself here at 10am on a Saturday morning, because I wasn't going to let long lines come between me and trying out their famous apple pie--so pie for breakfast it was! Better to eat those carbs in the morning and burn them off during the day right? (big wink) Good thing I arrived early because on a chilly Saturday, the Noordermarkt (the weekly farmers market located immediately outside this restaurant) was gearing up to full swing and tourists aplenty were flocking from all directions towards Winkel. There were 3 parties in front of me, and I waited for 10 minutes to order at the front counter. Both pie and tea were ready within a few minutes since with a limited menu on market Saturdays (morning thru afternoon), they keep a flow of pie slices ready in the wings ready to serve. Staff was courteous and efficient, they're clearly used to managing the routine chaos of busy days. For seating there are a couple dozen seats inside at communal tables or smaller cafe tables for 2-4. Outside seating in the form of picnic table and benches are available for about 20-25 though depending on the weather you may not want to linger. I was lucky enough to grab a seat next to a back window when another patron left, long enough to consume pie and tea. Verdict? Their Dutch style apple pie was indeed very good, meaty chunks of apple, not too strong on the warming spices, a balanced, sweetened short crust with just the right amount of sugar to give it a caramelized color and flavor. You can opt for with whipped cream (extra €0.90), or without (€5.10 for a plain slice). The serving is pretty large and decently filling, and I recommend it with the whipped cream, which added a little moisture and creaminess. Was it the best apple pie I've ever had? Questionable since there are so many versions out there, though I can say this was among the top. The crust had almost a cookie texture that was really unique, prob one of my top three pie crusts ever. The ginger tea (€2.90? I can't recall) w/fresh slab of ginger was a nice soothing hot drink (unsweetened) for a cold morning. Why 4 stars only? I can't say if this was an off-day, but when I went to use the restroom (two rooms downstairs down a very narrow and steep staircase), I walked in, washed my hands, and walked right back out. The odor in there was so foul it smelled of sewage leaking, even though I could not visibly see anything super dirty. Either way, I couldn't stand it more than 15 seconds, and I'm not usually squeamish about this type of stuff...but it was so extraordinarily overwhelming I felt like I would be ill. Ugh I hope it was an off day, and someone just had a bad time before I walked in. EDIT: reading other reviews apparently the bathroom is an issue for more than a few people so downgrading my review to 3 stars bc that's not ok...this needs to be handled better in a food establishment! When you come here, expect a line. Is this place overexposed? Yes. Is it overhyped? Absolutely not. It deserves its fame. We came here for the Apple Pie after seeing it highlighted all over social media. For a bonus, we also had the Dutch staple known as a tosti, which is their delicious version of a grilled cheese sandwich. The Apple Pie was incredibly delicious. The strudel crust was different from what you get in the US, and the pie actually tasted like apples and not sugar. The house made whipped cream took it up a level. On a cold rainy morning, this hit the spot. Our ham and cheese Tosti was also tasty. A tasty Tosti! The sandwich was well proportioned and not overstuffed with ingredients. Simple, yet elevated. The place is tight and cozy, but you don't mind it one bit when having food as good as they offer. You need to fit this into your Amsterdam itinerary if at all possible.
This apple pie deserves a gold medal. It's absolutely perfect. The crust's tastes is reminiscent of biscoff cookies although not as heavily spiced. The apple chunks are a delightful texture - big, juicy and tender. The filling is well spiced while letting the apples shine. And that whipped cream. Oh it's dreamy. I love slagroom! The overall ratio of the slice was superb, with the thin yet crisp crust encasing the entire piece, an ample dollop of whipped cream and packed high with apple filling, each bite was a balanced symphony. Coffee was good too. I got an iced flat white.
Came here in the evening for just their apple pie for dessert. Service was a bit slow and not super attentive. Their restrooms were also filthy. They clearly hadn't been cleaned or restocked at all during the day. In terms of the apple pie, I actually quite liked it. You just have to keep in mind that this isn't the American apple pie. It's much more rustic and I loved that it wasn't too sweet. Lots of apples inside.
Seeing this spot all over the recs, we have to give it a go. It was very crowded so worth splitting the group up so someone looks for a spot and another waits in line. When ordering, you'll be given the pie immediately but will get a number for the sandwiches and drinks. Known for their apple pie. It was pretty good overall, not much like the American pies we have at home. The crust and pie part is much thicker and the apple is in larger chunks. The whipped cream was really good. My friends got the cheese sandwiches and thought the flavor was a little muted (just straight up cheese), but it's served with ketchup.
While in Amsterdam, we HAD to try Dutch apple pie. This is THE spot to do just that! There are two lines outside, one to be seated in the actual restaurant, and one to order to go. The tables outside are first come first serve, and the Dutch are friendly enough to share a table with you if you ask kindly! We sat outside to avoid the wait. We ordered two pieces of apple pie with whipped cream, a hot chocolate milk with whipped cream and a cappuccino. Our server said "great choices!" when we ordered, so we knew we were in for a treat. In the US, all of the Dutch apple pie I have ever had, has had some kind of crumble topping, but this apple pie had a thick buttery crust on top and bottom. It was incredible! The apples were sweet, the crust was buttery, the whipped cream was the perfect addition. The hot chocolate milk was so good that my husband drank half of it, and he doesn't like milk! It was a grey, cloudy day and having a slice of warm apple pie was just perfect!
Not a big fan of apple pie but came for the hype to try it and it was worth it!!! Not a traditional American Apple Pie, thank god. There was a small line but it moved quickly. Friendly staff. The Apple Pie was surprisingly not as sweet as I would expect it. I ordered it with whipped cream which paired perfectly. My favorite part was the lightly burnt cookie crust. The apple pieces are thicker making it look massive but it's not really heavy. The cafes are also really good.
This place is legendary and it's for a reason. It is one of the best Apple based desserts that you will ever have in your entire life and include some of the best people watching that you can have in Amsterdam. There is some outdoor seating and some limited places indoors and it really is the perfect spot to take a break as you're exploring the city in the warmer months however, they do have some covers for when it does rain and get colder. The service is what you would expect for a European place so Americans, please be aware that you can sit down and enjoy your tart in peace.
While I heard about Dutch Apple Pies in Amsterdam, Winkel 43 was brought up in a canal tour. My friend and I decided to go there after the canal cruise to try this famous apple pie place and the restaurant was busy but luckily, there were two seats at the bar. We ordered one pie to share and boy, I could not believe my taste buds. It was extremely delicious! I mean, I normally don't care for apple pies but this place serves the best pies! It was not liquid like but more substance and more cake like. And best of it all, it was not too sweet. I came back a few days later to eat here by myself again because that was how extraordinary it tasted to me. And the crust was flaky good and the whipped cream that came atop was paired just perfectly! If you are a tourist or even a local, this is a MUST visit! read more

Five stars solely on the apple pie of course. Have come here just twice for the apple pie and both times: quick service, nice staff, DELICIOUS APPLE PIE. Not to mention, the whipped cream is also very good and is a must for the pie read more

Came her for their apple pie and was not disappointed. Although I was expecting something warm, I was very pleased with the sweetness and the texture of the dessert. Along with the pie, my friend and I shared a Zatte Beer from the local Brouwerij'tij. Great blonde to accompany the sweetness of the pie. But the thing I enjoyed about the restaurant was the social and relaxing environment the restaurant was located in. In other words, it felt so relaxing just having a beer with friends, watching local bikers ride by, and people watching those walking around the neighborhood. I felt right at home. read more

The BEST Apple pie I've ever had! The taste, texture, crust was perfect. Winkel 43 was recommended to me by an Amsterdam local... and this place did not disappoint. They may be busy when you arrive...but they also have seating indoor and outside. You can also take the pie to go and it is still glorious (!), they package everything nicely so you can still have the same experience as if you were dining in. Would recommend Winkel 43 for dessert! read more

I will never forget this apple torte ever, since it was unbelievably tasty and fresh. My favorite thing about European pastries is that they are not overly sweet and tantalize the taste buds, so you crave more. The cafe is small, but quaint and service was outstanding. Expect to wait a bit for seating if you go in the summer. Luckily for us we visited in early Spring. Best time ever. read more
Winkle is a great little bar on a canal street. As a tourist, it's close enough to the touristy activities but far enough away that it was not crowded with tourists (and was occupied by several Dutch speakers), at least not during my visit. Besides beverages, they offer full meals and snacks. And of course, the apple pie (their only dessert)! This was the only food item I tried. Large chucks of spiced apple, cakey, thick pie crust and an option of whipped cream. The pie is not overly sweet, which I liked. The apple chucks were clearly from fresh, not processed, fruit. I googled "Things to do in Amsterdam," and Winkel 43 popped up. It's 3/4 of a mile walk from the Amsterdam station. It's a scenic walk. Each step pulls you further and further away from the craziness of bikes, cars and trams. I will tell you that the line moves fairly quickly, so don't be saddened by that. We grabbed seats that opened up in the front, while the other half got into line. I needed an espresso, so compare that to my ginormous piece of APPLE PIE. It is to die for! I myself don't traditionally like American apple pies because it just taste like corn syrup to me. This pie, this beautiful apple pie; can not compare to American apple pie. BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH BETTER. The crust has the right amount of crunch and softness that I'm looking for. It's almost like cake! I love the consistency of the pie itself. The natural sweetness from the apples is enough for me. It is the perfect balance of sweet and spice (from the cinnamon). My fork just gracefully cuts through the pie. I need whip cream, but the pie did not. It is just so good, I ruined it with the whip. None the less. It is worth the walk and the wait. read more

Hands down this is the home of the BEST APPLE PIE I have ever had! I was in Amsterdam as part of a 2 week Eurotrip. My Airbnb host recommended this place as an absolute must. I must at admit, when we first arrived I was a little skeptical as the restaurant doesn't look like it would birth such greatness. But boy as the saying goes, "dont judge a book by its cover." The restaurant is small but offers great vibes and one of the best apple pies you will ever have in life! I generally like my apple pie warm with vanilla ice cream which is how its typically served in America. Unfortunately, they dont offer it warm or with ice cream. Don't worry you dont need it. Even at room temperature, to my surprise amazing, it was freaking amazing. When in Amsterdam, do yourself a favor and try this apple pie! read more

Best Dutch pie in town. Completely stood for my expectations. Not too sweet and with whipped cream. The crust was amazing, crisp and super buttery. Pie was at room temperature, warm would have been out of this world. Good coffee too. I got there after lunch time and there was a wait for groups. Being on my own I only had to wait 10 min for a spot at the bar. read more

Went for lunch after doing some research on places to eat in Amsterdam. Had the chicken club sandwich which was a great size if you're looking to save room for apple pie. THE APPLE PIE DOES NOT DISAPPOINT!!!! it was so good and I paired it with a delicious cappuccino but they have many coffees and a few teas to chose from. If you're not very hungry i would just go for the pie and a coffee which is what many people seemed to be doing. I would highly recommend you stop by! read more
The Dutch apple pie is truly to die for, with an almost shortbread-like crust that is sweet and rich and crunchy, against the poached slightly-sweet apples. Coupled with light, frothy whipped cream, it's definitely one of the best apple desserts I've ever had. They have a good breakfast special for 7 euros: a sammie with cheese and runny egg, a coffee, and orange juice. The sammie looks a little sad when it arrives (see the picture) but is actually quite tasty! Winkel 43 is almost certainly bombarded with tourists on Saturdays when the Jordaan market is so protip, if you can swing it, try going on a separate day. We arrived around 8am on Friday, and it was just the perfect breakfast, quiet and peaceful, with a good number of locals enjoying their brekkie alongside you! read more
Mint tea + fresh apple pie on a cold winter night was lovely. Not sure about the rest of the menu though. We asked the waiter what was popular other than apple pie. He pondered for a bit and said just the meatballs (first item on the menu) but had to ask the other waiter how many there were in a serving (6)... Sure enough we look around and most people are just eating apple pie. Nice relaxing ambiance with good mix of tourists and locals. Mint tea is great, the first time I've had it brewed with a whole bunch of fresh mint. read more

Visited Amsterdam back in April. Stumbled upon this café while wandering through the Jordaan district. There was a long line to get into the shop, which apparently is famous for its Dutch apple pie. Decided to give it a try, and ordered it. While I'm not a huge fan of apple-filling desserts, the Dutch apple pie wasn't too bad. Crust was super thick and hearty (just how I like it) and the filling wasn't too overpowering. Overall, a nice, little place to stop by and enjoy a small break on a pleasant day out. read more

Not sure this is a lingering place. Lattes look light in the loafers but look at the pie! So I looked at the pie. That is what made me stay and order the latte. But who cares about the latte. You don't come there for that. Just look at how many pin ups there are for the pie. It's the pie. Pie PIE....... pie. Oh god. The. .: P I E :. The pie must be Sinatra. Because it's legend. The pie must be Muhammad Ali....because it's legend. The pie....it's Prince....because it's legend. Ok. I'm on a pie-high. And If you are reading this... Wow! The hype is real. This is hands down the best apple pie I've ever had! I didn't think anything could beat McDonald's, but here you go. Wonderful crispy crumbly crust, subtle sweetness from the tender apples, and a light whip cream to bring it all together. This should be the national dish of The Netherlands. Superb! read more

The dutch apple pie is delicious! I mean i would walk anywhere in the world for this pie but the service oh the service is horrible. I mean the guy barely acknowledged us and kind of rushed us. I felt some type of way but when i took a bite of that pie, it was bearable. If your in Amsterdam come for the pie but not the service. read more

Their apple pie and hot chocolate (the perfect combination) are the bomb and worth braving the rush because everyone else visiting town also knows about their apple pie. We came in on a weekend afternoon and it was super crowded but we found two seats at the bar. The apple pie was just sweet enough and perfectly textured. The staff is serious about getting everyone what they need but also relaxed and seemed to be having a good time. I recommend stopping by if you're in Amsterdam for the best apple pie in town. read more

I don't personally like Apple Pie but I had to try this Dutch Apple Pie while in Amsterdam. The Apple pie at Winkel is nothing like the States. I absolutely love it. Fresh apples and cinnamon. Ohhhh and the crust! Mmmmm... Must try this place. read more

I'm not a dessert person (that's my bf) but wow this apple pie was to die for. We walked into the tiny shop and snagged a four seater in the window looking out to the dimly lit streets of Amsterdam. The pies came literally within 2 minutes... 40 minutes later...None of us left a crumb behind. This is a must in Amsterdam! read more

The pie is what we came for and it was definitely worth it. Long line, but worth it. Our Order: Apple pie slice, Americano, and cup of green tea Environment: very small and packed place. Verdict: great apple pie slice - definitely must have when in Amsterdam. The Apple pie was so full of flavor. Tips: come early or late. We had to wait a little bit and the "line" is a little unorganized since they are so busy. Shaft one piece for two people. Next Time: might come back if the line is not too long. read more

€4.30 for the best Apple pie I've had hands down. You know it's good when the apples aren't raw in the pie. You know it's even better when you can't stop digging your fork into the crust to get the apples. The crust was like a cookie on its own, enclosing the warm apple filling. It doesnt just look photogenic but it lives up to the hype too. I also ordered a mint tea that came with honey and a small cookie. read more
