The Apple Pie at Winkel 43 is a must try in Amsterdam. It was my wife and I's first stop after arriving in the city during our most recent trip. We loved it so much we had to visit a second time before leaving. The pie is made fresh and you can watch them make the pies while you are at the restaurant. Fresh warm buttery apples were surrounded by a crumbly ginger cookie-like crust. The pie was not too sweet and didn't have overly sugary syrup inside. This is the best Apple Pie I have ever had. The restaurant also has an extensive breakfast and lunch menu so we also tried the Brioche Cheese Souffle. A soft toasted bun was filled with crisp fried cheese with a gooey inside, crisp lettuce, and tangy pickles.
It was great to experience the apple pie but it doesn't taste particularly different than any other apple pies I've tried. Given all the hype I guess I expected more! Is it a bad pie? Not at all! Does it live up to the hype? Also no. Should you still try it? Of course! But I wouldn't go out of my way to go there unless you are in the area! The staff here are nice and friendly so that was a plus!
The apple pie was divine! Honestly the perfect stop after spending the day exploring town. It's a pretty busy spot and seating is first come first serve. Find a table, preferably outdoors. Inside is fine but I found it to feel crowded, busy and loud. The service was great although be patient. Their staff works diligently and are often faced with impatient tourists. Overall a great experience and would definitely go back for the pie!
Winkel 43 is the poster child for modern day marketing success--they've managed to land on every food blog, IG/TikTok/youtube travel and tourist page about Amsterdam; they're written up everywhere. To avoid FOMO, I found myself here at 10am on a Saturday morning, because I wasn't going to let long lines come between me and trying out their famous apple pie--so pie for breakfast it was! Better to eat those carbs in the morning and burn them off during the day right? (big wink) Good thing I arrived early because on a chilly Saturday, the Noordermarkt (the weekly farmers market located immediately outside this restaurant) was gearing up to full swing and tourists aplenty were flocking from all directions towards Winkel. There were 3 parties in front of me, and I waited for 10 minutes to order at the front counter. Both pie and tea were ready within a few minutes since with a limited menu on market Saturdays (morning thru afternoon), they keep a flow of pie slices ready in the wings ready to serve. Staff was courteous and efficient, they're clearly used to managing the routine chaos of busy days. For seating there are a couple dozen seats inside at communal tables or smaller cafe tables for 2-4. Outside seating in the form of picnic table and benches are available for about 20-25 though depending on the weather you may not want to linger. I was lucky enough to grab a seat next to a back window when another patron left, long enough to consume pie and tea. Verdict? Their Dutch style apple pie was indeed very good, meaty chunks of apple, not too strong on the warming spices, a balanced, sweetened short crust with just the right amount of sugar to give it a caramelized color and flavor. You can opt for with whipped cream (extra €0.90), or without (€5.10 for a plain slice). The serving is pretty large and decently filling, and I recommend it with the whipped cream, which added a little moisture and creaminess. Was it the best apple pie I've ever had? Questionable since there are so many versions out there, though I can say this was among the top. The crust had almost a cookie texture that was really unique, prob one of my top three pie crusts ever. The ginger tea (€2.90? I can't recall) w/fresh slab of ginger was a nice soothing hot drink (unsweetened) for a cold morning. Why 4 stars only? I can't say if this was an off-day, but when I went to use the restroom (two rooms downstairs down a very narrow and steep staircase), I walked in, washed my hands, and walked right back out. The odor in there was so foul it smelled of sewage leaking, even though I could not visibly see anything super dirty. Either way, I couldn't stand it more than 15 seconds, and I'm not usually squeamish about this type of stuff...but it was so extraordinarily overwhelming I felt like I would be ill. Ugh I hope it was an off day, and someone just had a bad time before I walked in. EDIT: reading other reviews apparently the bathroom is an issue for more than a few people so downgrading my review to 3 stars bc that's not ok...this needs to be handled better in a food establishment! When you come here, expect a line. Is this place overexposed? Yes. Is it overhyped? Absolutely not. It deserves its fame. We came here for the Apple Pie after seeing it highlighted all over social media. For a bonus, we also had the Dutch staple known as a tosti, which is their delicious version of a grilled cheese sandwich. The Apple Pie was incredibly delicious. The strudel crust was different from what you get in the US, and the pie actually tasted like apples and not sugar. The house made whipped cream took it up a level. On a cold rainy morning, this hit the spot. Our ham and cheese Tosti was also tasty. A tasty Tosti! The sandwich was well proportioned and not overstuffed with ingredients. Simple, yet elevated. The place is tight and cozy, but you don't mind it one bit when having food as good as they offer. You need to fit this into your Amsterdam itinerary if at all possible.
This apple pie deserves a gold medal. It's absolutely perfect. The crust's tastes is reminiscent of biscoff cookies although not as heavily spiced. The apple chunks are a delightful texture - big, juicy and tender. The filling is well spiced while letting the apples shine. And that whipped cream. Oh it's dreamy. I love slagroom! The overall ratio of the slice was superb, with the thin yet crisp crust encasing the entire piece, an ample dollop of whipped cream and packed high with apple filling, each bite was a balanced symphony. Coffee was good too. I got an iced flat white.
Came here in the evening for just their apple pie for dessert. Service was a bit slow and not super attentive. Their restrooms were also filthy. They clearly hadn't been cleaned or restocked at all during the day. In terms of the apple pie, I actually quite liked it. You just have to keep in mind that this isn't the American apple pie. It's much more rustic and I loved that it wasn't too sweet. Lots of apples inside.
Seeing this spot all over the recs, we have to give it a go. It was very crowded so worth splitting the group up so someone looks for a spot and another waits in line. When ordering, you'll be given the pie immediately but will get a number for the sandwiches and drinks. Known for their apple pie. It was pretty good overall, not much like the American pies we have at home. The crust and pie part is much thicker and the apple is in larger chunks. The whipped cream was really good. My friends got the cheese sandwiches and thought the flavor was a little muted (just straight up cheese), but it's served with ketchup.
While in Amsterdam, we HAD to try Dutch apple pie. This is THE spot to do just that! There are two lines outside, one to be seated in the actual restaurant, and one to order to go. The tables outside are first come first serve, and the Dutch are friendly enough to share a table with you if you ask kindly! We sat outside to avoid the wait. We ordered two pieces of apple pie with whipped cream, a hot chocolate milk with whipped cream and a cappuccino. Our server said "great choices!" when we ordered, so we knew we were in for a treat. In the US, all of the Dutch apple pie I have ever had, has had some kind of crumble topping, but this apple pie had a thick buttery crust on top and bottom. It was incredible! The apples were sweet, the crust was buttery, the whipped cream was the perfect addition. The hot chocolate milk was so good that my husband drank half of it, and he doesn't like milk! It was a grey, cloudy day and having a slice of warm apple pie was just perfect!
Not a big fan of apple pie but came for the hype to try it and it was worth it!!! Not a traditional American Apple Pie, thank god. There was a small line but it moved quickly. Friendly staff. The Apple Pie was surprisingly not as sweet as I would expect it. I ordered it with whipped cream which paired perfectly. My favorite part was the lightly burnt cookie crust. The apple pieces are thicker making it look massive but it's not really heavy. The cafes are also really good.
This place is legendary and it's for a reason. It is one of the best Apple based desserts that you will ever have in your entire life and include some of the best people watching that you can have in Amsterdam. There is some outdoor seating and some limited places indoors and it really is the perfect spot to take a break as you're exploring the city in the warmer months however, they do have some covers for when it does rain and get colder. The service is what you would expect for a European place so Americans, please be aware that you can sit down and enjoy your tart in peace.
We stopped into Winkel 43 for their famous apple pie which needs no introduction. We dropped in on a Tuesday evening (around 6:15pm) and it was busy. Lots of seating inside, outside and even some tables across the street. There was no menu given to us but there's a small snack menu on the tables. They also had a dinner menu (that starts at 6:00pm). - Appletaart (€4,00) - we got ours without whipped cream. Not too sweet but wish they warmed up the pie. I liked the bits of raisins mixed in but those were few and far in between. - Cappucino (€2,10) - standard fare. Decent but not the best apple pie I've ever had. read more
Apple pie like you've never had before (and I'm not a pie person)!! You can order to-go or sit there (find an empty table and a waiter will come later). The apple pie slice is huge and between 4-6€. There are huge chunks of apples with cinnamon and a couple raisins. The apples weren't too mushy and perfectly baked. What I love about this is how NOT sweet or almost fake sugary. Aside from that, my favorite part is also the cinnamon crust. It is thick and reminds me of a crumble that complements the filling beautifully. Oh my god. BEST APPLE PIE IN THE WORLD. I've never had PIE in general that I've even enjoyed and this pie is literally insane. The filling and the crust melt in your mouth and it's absolutely mouthwatering. Where else can you get delectable, amazing and literally iconic apple pie till 3am? A MUST visit if you're in Amsterdam. read more

My husband and I stopped by Winkel on a whim - we were in search of lunch in a cute cafe when Winkel appeared in front of us as we were walking around the Jordaan neighborhood. We're SO HAPPY we stopped in! They had really good lunch sandwiches at a very decent price (I got a huge tuna salad sandwich on a baguette that was like 8.50 euros), the coffee was fresh and well made, and we saw everyone ordering apple cake which came out in a huge slice covered with whipped cream, so of course we had to try that too. Holy cannoli - if you're an apple pie or apple crumble kind of person, do not miss out on the apple cake at Winkel!! We enjoyed our lunch so much at the cafe that we went back the next day - and I can confirm that their service, food, and coffee was just as good the second time. read more
Lovely place with great good and awesome service. Kitchen closes at 10 pm on the weekend so make sure you order food items before that. The obvious here is their best item which is the apple pie. Please get whipped cream with it whether on the pie or on the side. We ordered fried chicken (don't order - worst item on the menu), olives and lentil soup. The lentil soup was bomb. read more
Well I highly doubt this place needs another review, so I leave this here in appreciation. Of all the incredible Winkel apple pies I've eaten, I've loved each better than the last. Due to their indulgent nature, I usually spread out my visits, which leaves room to forget their beautiful, rich, pillowy taste. It's busy on the weekends with tourists, but come early or at odd hours and you hardly have to wait long. A handful of cafes in the city offer a similar slice, but if you're short on time, the search can stop here. Enjoy your Winkel while soaking up the backdrop of canal house-studded views. read more
Winkel 43 is located right across from the Anne Frank house, which is perfect for people who are in the area. It is a small cute bakery with many different drinks and some cute baked goods, but it is mostly known for its Apple pie. The Apple pie itself was perfect. It was just the right sweetness and stickiness. You could also see and feel the different slices of apples in your mouth. The Apple pie itself was also not too expensive. Overall, a great place to visit! Would highly recommend. It was one of the best Apple pies I've had. read more

It was worth the wait to eat some of the best apple pie in Amsterdam. Our wait was not as long as others because we chose inside instead of out. Others in line wanted outside so we moved up in line. Coffee and pie tasted great. Definitely a place to try in Amsterdam. read more
This place serves the apple "pie" cake thing that you read about in the guide books. Also coffee and teas and stuff. Good stuff. We came in for a slice. I'm not generally a big cakes or pies person but this is a good experience to have while in Amsterdam. read more
Wow. Talk about a slice of pie. There was a line probably 20people long when I arrived on a Friday morning, but thankfully they also do takeaway. I walked in and was able to order quickly at the bar. Walked in and out in less than 2 minutes and I quickly found myself in apple heaven. read more

The pie was delicious but we had to wait around 30-40 minutes for our toasted sandwich to arrive. The place is very busy and there are a ton of tourists (like me) and the star of the place is their apple pie. I would suggest just sticking with the pie as it is quick and delicious!! read more
I visited Winkel 43 as a "must-do" Amsterdam tourist stop, but I don't understand all the fuss. The apple cake was dry and not enjoyable. Maybe the Dutch-style cake just isn't my thing. Go for pancakes or other pastries, in my opinion. read more

Holy sh*t! I thought I've had a foodgasm before but after trying this apple pie, I realize I've been faking it. It rocked my world. It's just that good. I mistakenly came in on Saturday morning around 10am on my way to the Noordermarket. Do not do this unless you love fighting your way through a crowd with delicious apple pie and a hot drink on a tray. I was lucky enough to be by myself so I snagged a bar seat right in front of the payment counter. As I mentioned above, the apple is to die for. I mean... wow! The crust is tender but crumbly with a great balanced flavor and the apples are perfectly al dente with just the right amount of sweetness and spice. I got mine with cream (why anyone doesn't I don't know. Crazy people) and I think it made it even better. They have quite a selection of drinks so you can pretty much get whatever you want. I got the peppermint tea. It actually went with the pie fairly well. Yep, next time I come to Amsterdam, I'm just going to eat this apple pie, breakfast, lunch and dinner, every day. I was prepared to be let down by the hype surrounding the apple pie here. As Donald Trump liked to say to crooked Hillary during their 2016 debates....."WRONG WRONG WRONG" !! I don't like apple pie. But Winkel's interpretation was so tasty we went back each day we were in Amsterdam. Not overly sweet, and the crust is completely different from an American apple pie. Considering that Amsterdam's food scene overall is pretty dismal, Winkel really stood out as living up to hype and for 4 euros this was such a treat read more
I'm pretty much a sucker for anything with apples and coming here for a slice of Dutch Apple Pie was a no-brainer. The Dutch LOVE their apples in everything, so I trust that almost everything with apples would be good. I couldn't wait to finally get my hands on a real Dutch apple pie. Thankfully, I bypassed the weekend crowd madness this place gets by being a night owl on a weeknight, so it was extremely easy to grab a seat. They have an "endless"--as stated by the friendly waiter-- supply of apple pies ready to serve, so running out of pies will probably never be a problem here. The pie itself is about €3.90 and whipped cream is about an extra €0.50, which you possibly can't not get this with, unless you're lactose intolerant--it's the ONLY way to live. I have to say that I probably had such high hopes that I was a bit let down when I finally took my bites. It felt like too much breading in and around and I couldn't really taste the filling all that much because it tasted dry. The crust was perfectly flaky, but it was the inside that I didn't enjoy too much...even with the chunks of apples. The whipped cream definitely helped, otherwise, this would've tasted completely bland. I left a little disappointed, but I'm still eager to find an amazing Dutch apple pie because, well, it is the apple of my eye. read more
I am not an apple pie fan. I will never really choose to go buy apple pie or eat it even if it's sitting in front of me. My boyfriend and I came here on an early evening for their renowned apple pies on Yelp because he likes apple pie. We walked in and were seated quickly. Just ordered one apple pie because it's really big and I doubted that I would even eat that much of it so basically the entire slice would be his. We devoured it in literally a few minutes - if we just left in that moment, we probably would have been in an out of Winkel in just 10 minutes. But of course, it was so good we ordered another slice. Two slices was enough to satisfy any potential cravings I will ever have of apple pie for a long time, but for apple pie lovers - maybe you will not want apple pie from somewhere else again. I was very impressed with the texture of the cake and apples itself. You need to taste it for yourself! For anyone from the USA, this is not your classic apple pie. The layers of the apple pie at Winkel go so well together and it's all very soft and moist with a crust crunch. read more

Dutch Apple Pie. One of the best I have ever tried. This pie had layers and layers of delicious fresh apples with a perfectly flaky crust. The place is located in the Jordaan area near The Anne Frank House. We stopped here before touring. This is located on a corner in a cute, quiet area away from all of the hustle and bustle of the centrum. The service was great. I will definitely be returning if I visit Amsterdam in the future! read more
I can't say we randomly walked into this place, but we didn't seek it out either. We needed a place for lunch after arriving in Amsterdam and this was close and highly rated by my Yelpers. What a cool place. It was a beautiful day today, so there was quite a line for the outdoor seating. We were fine to eat indoors and got a table right away. We both had a bowl of the roasted paprika soup and it was awesome. It was very flavorful, and we loved it. It would have been enhanced with a nice warm piece of sourdough bread, but I digress! Our very friendly server told us that while it's not on the menu, they have their special apple pie. Dutch apple pie in Amsterdam? Yes please. A local man was at the table next to us and assumed we came for the pie. He told us that every Saturday morning people wait in lines around the block for one of their pies. Apparently they sell about 160 freshly baked pies each Saturday. I can see why. It was delicious. Not too sweet. The apples were soft, but not mushy. And the crust was firm and crunchy. The whipped cream was also to die for. All in all it was a great way to kick off our Amsterdam vacation. read more

We came here for a late lunch on a weekday and we were able to get seated pretty quickly. I can totally see it being more packed during peak tourist months. We got the club sandwich, Dutch pea soup, and the sausage. Everything was super yummy and were good portions. Not too pricey either which is much appreciated in this very expensive city. Of course, we also had to try the famous apple pie. It definitely lives up to the hype! It was so different from American apple pie which is what we were used to but in a good way. It wasn't too sweet and it tasted so homemade and fresh. Definitely get it with the whip cream because it really balanced out the pie. It was the perfect amount of sweetness. read more

After seeing this is one of the most highly sought after places to go to while visiting Amsterdam, I had to try it myself. We arrived and struggled to find a seat, as the place was jam packed, and for good reason. My expectations were high and I was ready to judge harshly, as an American I know my apple pie. Let me tell you, I was BLOWN away by this apple pie. The most amazing pie I think i've ever had. It doesn't look like anything crazy in photos but it blew my mind. If you're like us and missed out on getting into the Anne Frank house, do yourself a favor and head over to Winkel 43. You can drown your sorrows in delicious apple pie and warm mint tea. When we arrived the line was OUT THE DOOR, so I knew that we were in the right place. We ended up grabbing a table outside, which is outstanding for people watching. The patio has ample seating, which is helpful because the inside seating can get a bit crowded. I ordered the mint tea which was so refreshing, the perfect pairing for the subtly sweet apple pie. When I find myself in Amsterdam again, and NOT skipping on the Anne Frank house reservations, you can find me at Winkel43 afterwards :) read more
What are the top things to eat in Amsterdam (not including coffee shop edibles)? Dutch Apple Pie is number one! We stopped in at this place for their well known Dutch apple pie with whip cream and it was delicious! I don't even like apples, especially cooked apples and this pie was amazing. The apples were very soft almost of a different texture than I'm used to in apple pie - much softer and sweeter not as tangy. The crust was delicious and the whip cream was amazing. Looking back I should have had my own slice! We also ordered a ginger and green tea. They just throw large amounts of fresh mint or ginger into hot water and voila there is your tea. Life changing. Must go here when in the Dam! read more
