The Central Rock Gym separates their routes using hold colors which is much better than gyms that put stickers near each route. The gym is clean and staff if very friendly. A member of the staff, James, had a strong role in getting us into the sport.

The facilities are also well-maintained since they are clean and properly managed. My biggest concern for this place, however, is the affordability of the memberships. I'm sure the up-keeping of the facility can be expensive, but the prices only attract a particular group of people. Perhaps this is intentional; I am always looking for places that seek to incorporate diversity, both economically and racially. Keeping up with the monthly membership price is surely not sustainable for someone who lives off minimum wage or, even for someone who makes a bit more. Thus, though this can be a fun and safe place for the community, it lacks the actual representation of the latter. Moreover, no incentive programs currently exist to make this place a bit more affordable for the average working-class family in the city. Now, while they do have a family plan, it is exclusively for immediate family. I tried to create a membership with my older brothers but, was told that the family membership was only for my spouse and children. of which I have neither. This is truly a disappointment since with the single membership, you can only bring a guest with you once a month; after that there is a fee. So, if you're someone like me, who likes to bring a friend along to help with climbing or to encourage you with working out, this isn't the place for you. Unless of course, you friend wants to purchase a membership, too. But again, it´s just not cost-efficient or worth it for the average low/medium income person. But, for those of you who make a good amount of money, this place can definitely be worth it. They offer a wide range of workout classes and opportunities to get better at rock climbing. You'll just want to make sure you're taking advantage of everything- to make the dollar count. Overall, I really enjoy rock climbing, and this facility is truly well-managed and maintained. It has a lot of potential to actively engage with the community it's in; however, whether intentional or not, it greatly lacks in being a racially and economically diverse space. This is truly unfortunate for a place as fun and engaging as this one can be. Frankly, it's intimidating when you can count, with one hand, the number of people of color during a typical night, or even to witness the non-existence of the lower/ lower-middle class. And if you're from Worcester, you know it's a large community they're keeping out, a community that is greatly diverse. This facility has the opportunity to bring people together, but unfortunately, the prices hinder this from doing so and have instead, settled for just one particular group. And oh! the prices just recently went up $5.00 for all memberships.

Don't get scammed by the manager…read more I recently relocated to NH from the west coast and have been an avid bouldering enthusiast for 15 years. This is the only climbing gym in the area so naturally I went to check it out and bought the 2 week punch card promotion with free top rope class. On first impression evo is a beautifully constructed climbing gym that is primarily catered to top rope. I was disappointed that the bouldering area seemed to be an afterthought. The second thing I noticed was that this gym is absolutely FILTHY. Chalk everywhere, every surface is coated with a layer of chalk the climbing holds are caked with chalk and grime. There seems be no daily cleaning being done despite the numerous amount of staff members on the floor. You can't sit on bouldering mats without being covered in chalk. This place is a COPD hazard. I was still going to sign up for a monthly membership despite these issues. However, on the last day of my 2 week pass I was called down to the front desk on the intercom. I wasn't sure why, but the employee notified me that his boss told him that my pass had already expired and I need to pay $20 for a day pass. This wasn't correct, I asked to speak with him and he insisted that my trial began the moment I paid online several days before actually starting my 2 weeks. After 20 minutes of explaining the terms of my contract to the manager and showing him what 14 consecutive days means, he eventually said that my contract was indeed still valid. The ordeal took so long I was late for work and I never got to ask if this mistake was due to the manager being incompetent, or if he was trying to commit contract fraud. I went back to speak with him in person and he denied any accountability and started becoming belligerent and banned me for life while screaming and cursing me out the door for questioning him. If you are a member, know the terms of your contract and if this happened/happens to you please report it to the NH attorney general. If you are a staff member, if the manager asks you to do something illegal, say no and tell him to go clean the walls. If you are the owner of this establishment, you need a new manager.

That's something I really enjoy at a rock climbing gym, and I can tell they value the importance of customer service. The facility is absolutely beautiful with high walls- many of which are leadable, new holds, and frequent new routes. The route setting is different, technical, and well thought out. I really appreciate the effort they put into their routes, and that is the main reason I choose to drive an hour to use the gym! They also have a great workout area and yoga room. This place is definitely worth the visit, and if you're a student, have your ID ready because they offer a big student discount :)

The town mask mandate requires businesses to respect medical exemptions. I was belaying my partner at Central Rock Hadley in August 2021 when they told me to put my mask on after I'm done belaying him. I said "OK!", and they left. A couple of minutes later, when I was holding my partner up in the air, both hands clearly occupied, the manager came and snapped at me in an extremely nasty tone to put a mask on immediately at that moment. I explained to her that I was holding my partner up in the air and it would be unsafe to do so. How more unsafe could you get than to demand someone to put a mask on while they're holding someone up in the air? She then said that I had to either lower him, or give her the rope so I could put a mask on. I wanted my partner to finally get that climb and to continue to communicate with him about it so I put my mask on while she held the rope. After I was done lowering my partner, I took it off, and she came back to harass me, which I explained that I had a medical exemption and there has been no issue from anyone with me wearing it when I could and taking it off when I couldn't, until now. She stated I had to put the mask on immediately at that moment, or leave now, and if I didn't chose one of the two options, she would call the police on me. I told her I would leave and later on she explained that I had to wear a face shield if I couldn't wear a mask, to which I explained that I couldn't wear a face shield either. Her rules were: everyone needed to wear either a face shield or a mask. My medical exemption was effectively ignored. They violated my rights through violating the ADA and the Massachusetts Public Accommodation Law. https://www.mass.gov/service-details/public-accommodation-civil-rights-protections The town of Hadley mask mandate states: "Nothing in this order shall be construed to require a mask to be worn by children under age five (5) or children who frequently compromise mask integrity with frequent manipulations or removals, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance or anyone who cannot wear a mask for other underlying health and safety reasons." The manager and employees were also delighted when my truck with signs advocating for medical freedom was vandalized. In fact, from how they acted, I wouldn't be surprised if they knew who did it, or were even involved with it themselves. The Hadley police reviewed the footage but the footage was too blurry to see who did it, so I wouldn't be surprised that these bullies tampered with it, either.

This keeps the gym feeling really safe and professional, which I enjoy. I also love the variety of yoga and fitness classes, plus the free weights in the gym. It's the perfect mix for me of climbing, yoga (which I used to HATE and now generally enjoy, thanks to CRG) and weightlifting. The training area upstairs is also great for climbing-specific training, with a variety of hangboards, a kilterboard, and more. I really like the vibes here, and the music is great 99% of the time. Great atmosphere and a nice sense of community fostered by the staff with lots of events like queer climbing night, women's climbing night, and more. Honestly, my favorite reason for living in this area. Highly recommend visiting!

The gym has a good amount of bouldering, mainly intermediate V4-6 and some top-roping with quite a few autobelay routes. There are yoga classes twice a week which is included in a membership though I have yet to try a class. Otherwise, it's a fairly standard climbing gym with interesting climbs, especially for beginner and intermediate climbers. They have a room full of bike racks as soon as you walk in which is nice, as someone who bikes to the gym. The facility is pretty large with a lounging area, training areas, plenty of storage space, and clean bathrooms. You do have to bring your own chalk (or rent gear which comes with chalk), and the chalk that is for sale in the store is not that great in my opinion and doesn't fully coat the fingers.

It's suitable for all skill levels - even true beginners. I love that they have a tier level below v0 which has made it so much easier to get introduced to climbing. They also have top roping at this location along with all sorts of classes and an event space! The only drawback of this place is that it does tend to get crowded in the evenings during peak times and also there's almost guaranteed for there to always be a few kids birthday parties over the weekends but generally it's contained to one area of the gym so it's not too distracting.
