Bottom line: This is a small, but intensely educational and great experience; "Remember the past, protect the future." I was fortunate to be in town for the grand re-opening of this museum. I had not been to the previous location so I did not know what to expect. The Wing Luke Asian Museum is billed as "the only pan-Asian Pacific American museum" in the United States and has displays of Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Koreans and Cambodian history. If you read and take in everything the museum tour can be completed in about 45 minutes. Being a first generation Asian American I did not experience some of the troubling experiences of the early immigrants; Japanese American Internment, the ban of Chinese immigration, riots in 1907 and riots against immigrant Sikhs (mistakenly called Hindus) who labored in nearby lumber mills. The one that hit home for me the most was the denial of Filipinos, who fought for the American military during World War 2, rights to receive full veteran benefits. Over the years, these veterans have acquired partial benefits such as becoming naturalized U.S. citizens, burial benefits with military honors in national cemeteries as U.S., and access to care in VA hospitals, clinics and nursing homes. They are not eligible for non-war related disability pensions that their American counterparts receive. Many Filipino Americans are barely subsisting and seek livable pensions. In 1993, the Filipino Veterans Equity Act was first introduced to enable Filipino World War II Veterans full benefits. Until today, this act has not been successfully passed. The Filipino American community, young and old, continue to struggle and fight for the rights of our Filipino heroes. Reference: http://www.filam.si.edu My grandfather fought in the war and it never dawned on me why he never went to the VA for his medical care. I just assumed he had full rights since he was part of the US forces. The experience reminds me to appreciate what I have, remind me of the hardships of the past and to take advantage of the opportunities provided to me. read more

Wing Luke Museum - The New Location - Museums Near Me - Seattle, Washington

I was really excited about visiting Wing Luke and wished that I could've gotten there a bit early to really dive into the museum and get lost in the richness of Asian American history. Unfortunately, true to form, I arrived with only about an hour and a half to spare before they closed so my tour of the museum was a bit more rushed and frazzled then what I would've wished for. There is quite a bit of history on the walls but found without the guided tour it difficult to follow organizationally. The architecture was beautiful and serene and only added to the rich simplicity of this building. I'll be sure to come back so I can get a guided tour and really immerse myself in the Asian Culture. Even without the guided tour it was worth every penny (12 bucks) and a high recommend on my list. read more

We parked across the street from this museum and got very lucky, no entrance fees for us today but they do have a donation box... The place is very new....something chinatown needed.... The showcases were cool, had immigration papers from 1847, or something like that.... There is a little theater, a gift shop and a tour for a small fee.....there is an old grocery store and association next door for tour.... read more

I am certainly not a museum girl, but my cousin convinced me to go because they had an arcade type exhibit going on around this time. Random video games in a museum (pacman, megaman, random ones that were nonmainstream made recently, and ridiculous ones) super interesting and fun! also learned about the history of the eateries in the area. check in on yelp, you get $2 off front desk guy is super nice! thank you! read more

We came here on the Smithsonian sponsored Free Museum day. We enjoyed the museum. There seemed to be an over emphasis on Bruce Lee. I can see that, but I would like to have seen broader representation of Asians in early Seattle History and some more fact checking. I did see one of the exhibits with an large error and should have written it down. We did enjoy the museum and may be back when we have more time. read more

One of the best museums in the area! Wing Luke is a fantastic museum! It incorporates Asian American history and diaspora in the Northwest in a really engaging way. They have a mix of exhibitions, some from the museum's collection, some curated by local artists and interest groups. Families in the area have gifted some of their historic buildings to the museum so the layout is unique. It's several buildings melded together and you can take a tour of old hotels and learn about how different groups immigrated to Seattle and lived as they were transitioning to life in the States. They offer a number of free tours in addition to some paid ones (like the Bruce Lee tour of Chinatown), and I highly suggest taking advantage of those opportunities! The guides are often UW students and they are really engaging the knowledgeable. This museum is most famous for its collection of Bruce Lee related materials and they curate different exhibitions about his life and time in Seattle. It's really well done and a must see for anyone who is a fan. What I like most about this place though is how engaged it is with the community. They hold events, speaker series, and their location in the ID allows them to be part of the living history that is the Asian American community in Seattle. This is definitely not your stuffy, quiet museum, it's incredibly relevant and engaging. I spent about 4 hours here going through the whole place and I could have stayed a little longer. Whether you're visiting Seattle or live here, this place is a must visit! read more

A thoughtful, accessible approach to the potentially unwieldy idea of Asian-Americanness. The Wing Luke is a unique and valuable space, so go support it! It's not intimidating for those who have had little previous exposure to Asian/Asian-Am culture and history, and there's certainly plenty here for those who are particularly interested in Asian-Am issues. Besides enjoying the exhibits and the tour, I bought an armful of great books at the shop. I'm personally very grateful that this place exists, and I wish that we had something similar in the New York area. read more

I am sad that I hadn't checked out The Wing Luke before this last week! I was fortunate to attend an event here hosted by Verizon. The event was a promo event for Verizon and they partnered with T.D. Wang Advertising group. Everyone did a great job! The museum is sleek, modern, and beautiful. I was impressed with the set up and the displays. I especially liked the portrait rooms upstairs with individual rooms dedicated to a certain people's experiences immigrating to the U.S. Each room and exhibit was thoughtfully compiled and displayed. I very much look forward to returning to spend more time looking at the displays. I could easily have spent a couple hours here reading all the stories and looking at the artifacts. I think every person living in the Northwest should visit The Wing for the amazing history and because it's a unique, interesting museum. Their gift shop is tiny but cute with lots of fun items to look at. $12.95 for adult admission but 1st Thursdays are free. read more

I went on the first Thursday of July; so I didn't have to pay. And you know what it's a good thing because if I paid to walk through a museum where half the galleries were empty I'd be a bit disappoint, actually I'd be more than just a bit disappointed. However what I did see I enjoyed and I actually learned a thing or two while there but there just wasn't enough for me. I know it just re-opened so that may be why it is still half empty but one would think if a museum is having a grand opening they'd at least have the majority of their space filled wouldn't they? I will say that the inside/outside wooden hallway was cool and the artifacts found in Seattle and the dresses on display were nice to see and informative to me but I wanted to see more. I'll go back in a few months and check it out again on another First Thursday just in case it's still empty. Useful information coming...it's FREE on the first Thursday of the month so you should go check it out on the next first Thursday of the month. And Ron just informed me that they are also free on the third Saturday of the month. read more

For years, I went to the museum for free by taking advantage of their free promotions. I managed to see just about every exhibit there and it was always a great outing. A few years ago, I decided that I really believed in museum, the work they did, and wanted to support them by becoming a member and paying my way for a change. That was one of the best decisions I've ever made. As a member, I still go there as often as I can to see every new exhibit. I work in the business district and often go there during lunch to buy something from the Marketplace with my member discount. I love Hello Kitty. They have Hello Kitty stuff. Win. I love the details of the museum - it's a fantastic space, with multiple levels, beautiful artwork and rustic woodwork. The community hall has hosted many events I've attended including monthly Family Fun Days where kids and adults can come together, learn some history, and do art projects. I love art projects but absolutely dread getting supplies, setting them up, making stuff, and then having to clean up. Just this weekend I was there and it was a fantastic experience making furoshiki using painted stamping techniques. The exhibits tackle serious issues in Seattle's Asian American history such as the Japanese internment and API suicide. Since I am Asian but not from Seattle, I am not familiar with all of the history of the area and the museum always provides a learning experience. In other contexts, I've attended events at the museum for work in the theater and some of the private meeting rooms upstairs. I often feel centered when I am there and I'm grateful to have the opportunity to visit. read more

A friend of mine said she saw this museum one time and wanted to check it out, so we picked a dreary morning, had some dim sum across the block, and then popped in. Student discount ($9.95), yay - but seriously even at full price ($12.95), every cent would have been worth it (or first Thursday/3rd Saturday are free). So fascinating! The admission includes a 45 minute tour of the "hotel" upstairs of the building, which was historically a building where immigrants could stay while getting their feet on the ground in a new country. The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, we learned about several different ethnic groups that came to the area - nothing was sugar coated but nothing was overly dramaticized either. It was really an amazing way to learn about the history of this area and I felt as if I better understood some of what makes Seattle so unique. The exhibits were beautifully laid out, very polished and professional, while at the same time thought-provoking and informative. There were so many layers - different levels available depending on how much time you have. There are also wonderful interactive art exhibits reflecting on the immigrant experience. The museum is also highly involved in community and other outreach events. I will take future out-of-town visitors here, especially anyone interested in history or immigrant culture. And I highly recommend every Seattle resident visit at least once! read more

The tour here was fantastic and really worthwhile. They said it was about 45mins to an hour, but felt so short--there's so much going on at this museum! When we stopped in, just to check things out, we bought a day pass and were invited to join either the tour that has just started about ten minutes ago, or be back for the next one that started at 3:30p. We walked around the museum a bit, they have a fashion exhibit that is phenomenal, as well as an educational art exhibit regarding suicide among Asian Pacific Islander American girls that I will be back to spend time exploring. Very modern and inviting feel to the space, and excellent design to the visuals. The tour started in the theatre, where our guide set up the stage: Chinatown in the 1800s, and what the very neighborhood we sat in used to be like. We touched on the amazing and brief life of Wing Luke, whom I am now intrigued about and will be researching more, and the different phases of Asian and Pacific immigrants to the PNW. Then it got awesome. We went next door to see a totally preserved shop owned by James M. Mar, with goods, import ledgers, and a rich history. Apparently, this shop had been open for over a hundred years, and has been beautifully kept as a piece of history. There are tons of military certificates on the wall, as James M. Mar was one of the first Nisei Vets. THEN we went to the historic Hotel upstairs! AMAZING. Our tour guide did a wonderful job of recounting the histories of the unique Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino experiences during that time. We touched on the internment of the Japanese in the 1940s, and social justice issues. We also learned about tongs, or Chinese gangs that may still exist for gambling and protection purposes. Unfortunately, we did not have enough time to fully explore the cultural exhibit and the visiting show on wood butterfly joinery furniture by some famous designer, but will be back. All in all, this was the coolest tour/museum I've been to in ten years, and would take anybody and am moved to become a member. read more

I guess I didn't know what to expect out of this museum. It's hard to really present the Asian American experience as it's so different for everyone. I just felt it should have been presented in a better way. I found it sort of random and almost a story that was too hard to follow. The main reason I came here was for the Bruce Lee Exhibit. Like most Asian American males, I grew up loving Bruce Lee. He was a hero that we could all look up to as we had very few back in the 80's and before. Even today, he's probably the epitome of Asian male heroes. The exhibit had a lot of little bits on his past and his background. I wish they had more artifacts though besides letters. Most of the letters were to his wife. I find it interesting, but not what I'm there to see. The coolest thing I did see though were some hand written notes for his book Tao of Jeet Kune Do. I wish they had more stuff like or even props like his actual yellow suit from the Game of Death. I also don't understand when museums don't allow photography. read more

This is a very impressive museum. The interior is gorgeous and they have some truly thoughtful exhibits and content inside. The Bruce Lee exhibit is one of the more unique and well-curated exhibits I've ever seen -- a must-see for any fan. read more

There's a student discount. $25 for 2 students. I didn't have my student ID and they let it slide. There's also a free tour included with the ticket. This guy Don showed us around and told us about the history of Wing Luke, the building, and Chinatown. He also showed us around this old Chinese herbal shop and Chinese hotel which are no longer in business. The exhibits were very heartwarming showing the experiences of Asian Americans, all different kinds of Asian Americans. There was an exhibit about the horrible effects of war, one about Asian stereotypes and racism, about different Asian cultures. There was also one about the different drinks that Asians drink. My favorite exhibit was the Bruce Lee exhibit. He has many inspirational quotes, health tips, and this cool room of mirrors thing. I think Bruce Lee is really cute. We're not allowed to take pictures of photos because they are afraid the flash will ruin them. There's also a nice gift shop with Asian stuff. read more

I was waffling about going. What a great choice I made. We caught the last tour. Do not miss the tour. The docents were excellent and very knowledgeable; plus you get to see places you wouldn't otherwise see. An important point is that this museum is pan-Asian. That makes it utterly unique in this hemisphere. Yes- hemisphere. The exhibits were lovingly curated to encourage thinking about identity, heritage, and racism. I learned so much about the first Asians in Seattle, saw amazing contemporary works in the gallery, learned about the Washington internment camps, Samoan soldiers in the ww2 Pacific theater, Filipino tattoos, Sikhs working on the Pacific Railroad, hmong soldiers in Laos, and was floored by it all. It pulls no punches. If you only go to one museum in Seattle, make it the Wing. read more

Went here today for the Bruce Lee exhibit. It was super small but it is the only one outside of Hong Kong so I'm not really complaining. They did a good job on displaying his writing and work I just wanted more. More pages of his ideas to read would be cool. After wondering another exhibit I wish I had more time to go through all their exhibits. I only got to see two today. Next month maybe I'll see the full set. read more

Wing Luke Museum - Museums Near Me - Seattle, Washington

The Wing is my favorite museum in Seattle. Beyond the beautiful and informative exhibitions, I like that the museum is very active in community development and promoting (often overlooked) API civil rights issue resolution. When you visit The Wing, the Historic Hotel Tour is a MUST. I've probably been on that tour at least five times now, and I love how it's a little different each time. There is a depth to oral history that sometimes gets glossed over in written histories. The Wing is big on supporting oral histories as a means of sharing knowledge across generations, which I think is really cool. If you have time to peruse the galleries, definitely check out the corner on Japanese Internment up on the second floor (it's in the gallery to the left). Also I think sometimes people miss the smaller galleries dedicated to different Asian American groups in Seattle (up the stairs, through the doors at the other side of the left-hand gallery and you'll see them). My favorite is the room for the Alaskeros. They look so boss :) read more

Note to possible patrons: this is a museum focused on the experiences and art of Asian and Pacific Islander AMERICANS. Our history and experience here is certainly political (as it is for any immigrant group), and very different from those of our, our parent's or our ancestors home countries. The focus of the museum is largely on the immigrant experience, so those that expect to learn about the culture of a certain country, or who aren't comfortable learning about people without learning about the politics or social conditions that influenced them, would indeed be uncomfortable here (as evidenced in other reviews). That being said, this, for me, is a Seattle staple. I appreciate the new space, and specifically what they did to preserve the Yick Fung storefront when the museum took it over (check out one of the immersion tours to learn about this). Seattle is an incredibly segmented community, and if one never reached beyond the requisite four Asian American friends every Seattlite has, many would have absolutely no sense of how rich all of the immigrant histories (not just Asian) are here. So maybe I wax a little too political, but this museum--for me--is a great representation of what such an establishment can do to preserve and demonstrate history, and what it can do to add to the richness of our city. There are changing exhibits all the time, special events, and some free Thursdays each month. The WLAM is personally significant to me, but it also reminds me the importance of checking out museums that celebrate and represent other experiences in Seattle. I hope you will come and check it out, if you haven't already. And as with any museum or cultural experience that you approach with an open mind, expect to walk out a little bit changed. read more

I had meaning to come here for a while, so it must have been fate when one Saturday we walked by and found out it was free admission that day (with donation, of course). This museum is small, but it's really cool. The architecture and design of the building alone is worth a visit. When I went they had a really cool exhibit (not sure if it's permanent) on Asian-American fashion designers, including Seattle's own Luly Yang, that I really enjoyed. Definitely worth a visit the next time you're in the ID! read more

I'm not a museum person but being chinese and my daughter wanting to go, off I went. Had no pre-conceived opinions so I had an open mind. There is a Bruce Lee exhibit so that was pretty cool, really cool. Who doesn't love "Enter the Dragon?" They had a student discount and if you remember to check in, they give you a $2 discount :) We took advantage of the tour (included in the price of admission) and saw a store front that looked like something I used to see when I was a kid (ok, guess I could be in that museum too). Funny how that stuff creeps up on you. Really was horrified to read about all the atrocities that have been perpetrated against Asians. There was one area of the museum that really mad me feel sick to my stomach. How could we as a country treat an ethnic section of people as sub-par? How can we as a global community stand for that? We have history that we should have learned from but for some reason, we still have these issues today. Beautiful, informative, but hard look at our history. A must see for all that want peace for our world. read more

Caught the 2nd exhibit on Bruce Lee focusing on his TV and film career. Really appreciated the museum more this time around. To make the most of your visit, I recommend taking a tour. We took the basic tour that is included with admission, not the Bruce Lee tour. We went through the Bruce Lee exhibit on our own. Our docent, John, was very knowledgeable, funny and passionate about history. He took us through locked portions of the museum like the storefront that used to serve as a grocery store, import/export business, travel agency and housing for new immigrants. We also saw the original hotel on the upper floor complete with peeling paint and creaky wooden floors. This museum is more about sharing the stories and experiences of Asian immigrants to this country rather than ancient objects and artifacts. Don't expect to see Ming Dynasty vases and terra cotta warriors. We spent about 3 hours here and while I just browsed through some of the exhibits, most of them were engaging. I think this is the first time in a long time that I was actually interested in looking at all the exhibits and not just rush through. read more

Decent, but somewhat disappointing given the $17 adult admission fee. The best part for us was the hotel tour that is included in the admission; if not for that it wouldn't have been (almost) worth the price. The tour took about 45 minutes, and we spent an additional 90 minutes viewing the displays, for a total of 2 hours 15 minutes. PROs: - Hotel tour. Very interesting, with a knowledgeable guide. This would be better by providing information on more items in the rooms, such as the Flying Tigers uniform in one of the rooms. And it would have been helpful to have more time to read the information that was posted. - History of Wing Luke. From the small display, we learned of the significant role he had on Seattle before his early and untimely death. - Central Gallery, which primarily covered the American experience of Asian ethnic groups that began arriving in the Pacific NW in the late 1800s. (eg Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Sikh). - Community Portrait Galleries. These are small rooms that seemed to mainly cover the American experience of relatively recently-arrived immigrants. (eg Vietnamese, Cambodian, Indian). - "Contemporary Issues" display, which discussed current US political/government actions/policies related to specific groups. CONs: - Navigating the museum. The provided map was difficult to follow (for both of us. For example, we both had trouble locating the Bruce Lee display). Signs with arrows would help. - Art Gallery. The content of the display seemed a bit out-of-place, or at least unexplained. Would have preferred more displays on the experience of Asian Americans. OTHER - The Bruce Lee display might be interesting to rabid Bruce Lee fans. We found it mildly interesting. It was odd that there were a few additional Bruce Lee items on the 3rd floor, separate from the Bruce Lee display on the first floor. - History of Japanese and Japanese Americans in the Pacific NW. The WW2 relocations were covered, but I didn't see much if any mention of how this experience hugely shrunk the Japanese American community in the Pacific NW for the long-term, and not just during the war years. read more

I love this place! Before arriving to Seattle, I researched and read a little about the Bruce Lee exhibit and as a huge fan, I had to check it out. Arriving to the museum, the first thing I notice that it is not a huge place. The thing is though, it doesn't have to be because of all its history and importance to the community. The Bruce Lee exhibit was everything I hoped for and MORE! I cannot wait until they switch out to the other themes as I will definitely be going back to see. We attended the tour with our guide, Don. It was by far the best tour I have ever been to! We learned so much about Wing Luke, the museum, and the history of Seattle and all the amazing contributions made by Asian Americans. The third floor hotel as well as the old school herbal storefront was just breathtaking. I truly appreciate how they kept everything true to how it was with very minimal modifications. I am so happy I got the opportunity to spend time here. For a little over ten bucks, you can really gain a whole lot from this amazing museum. read more

This has to one of the most progressive museums I have been too. I'm so glad there is a museum out there that exhibit the Asian community's struggles against racism. The Japanese internment camps, the struggles of the Filipino manongs in the canneries & in the farms, the senseless violence against South Asians post 9/11 were all well done. It shows how ignorance and fear have destroyed innocent lives and how it is an ongoing issue to this day. The last time I went they had an excellent exhibit on sex trafficking and mail order brides. I definitely recommend stopping by this museum, it is worth the trip and it reminds people that we are not done in our fight for justice and equality for all in this country. read more

I was super excited to hear about this museum!! AND they are running a Bruce Lee exhibit and walking tour!! So of course we had to book the tour!!! It was about an hour and a half of walking around the International Chinatown District and learning more of Bruce Lee's college years in Seattle. We also got to eat lunch in one of the restaurants that Bruce Lee frequented. This museum is quite modern, but still with a warmth from all the wood interior. Our guide told us that the current location is the third and final one. What catches your eye as soon as you walk in the door is the staircase...and when you get closer you notice all the names stamped into the metal of each step. You are greeted as soon as you walk in the door and everyone here is so nice!! There is a lot to see here - take your time and absorb it all in. Wing Luke was a man that was taken too early from the Seattle community, but this museum is such a great legacy. There is an exhibit that shares a bit of Wing Luke's history, contributions to Seattle and the community. One of my favorite exhibits was one of the migration of Asian people to Seattle for work and or the gold rush. It talks about their hardships, fun and culture. Timelines galore in the exhibit!!! This is a unique gem in the International Chinatown District of Seattle. If you have a chance, take the time to stop by. You won't be disappointed! read more

Disclaimer: I have never been to the Wing Luke Museum. This review is for the gift shop. After seeing the film "The Cats of Mirikitani" several times, I fell head over heals in love with the artwork of the late and uniquely talented artist, Jimmy Mirikitani. The Wing Luke Museum has a collection of Mirikitani drawings, and the gift shop sells various prints. My best friend, Jean C. gave me a gift certificate from The Wing for my birthday. She called out there from Chicago and worked it out with the staff, so when I called, they knew who I was and what I wanted and the transaction went perfectly. The print arrived in perfect condition several days later, making me a very happy camper. Today I picked the print up from having it framed. It looks fabulous. Three cheers for the Wing Luke Museum and long live the memory of Jimmy Mirikitani!! read more

Great museum that proudly digs into the history in the few miles around where the Wing Luke is located. Even the more educated Seattle-ites may not know of the difficult past the International District has had, and of the discrimination (to include Japanese-American residents being rounded up and sent to internment camps during WWII) its residents have faced and overcome. I'm a big fan of the museum and always finish my visit with a trip to the Panama Hotel tea house down the street where a cache of internment-camp-bound residents' belongings were found not too long ago. read more

Ok, as a part of my language training that I'm getting here at Fort Lewis, we had to go on a field trip to learn about Asian culture. Specifically, Korean culture. So our instructor finds out about this museum and assumes that we would get to see some Korean exhibits in here. Riiiiiiiight... After paying $7 with a military discount, I walked into what started off looking a respectable museum into exhibits that looked like college art displays from Fine Arts 101. Not to mention the fact that everything took a political position and very rarely did anything of true culture come out. The only thing that remotely caught my eye was the young lady working at the reception desk (last name was Aquino?) and that's about it. Otherwise, I want my money back. Oh yeah - and there was nothing there on Korea except one small display case that held a few pictures of traditional dress. Wow...I'm impressed. Uh huh. read more

I took a small group of teens here earlier and we had a FANTASTIC experience. I was concerned about taking teens to Wing Luke as I'd always associated it with Elementary aged youth - I had no reason to be concerned! Wing Luke tackles huge issues - racism, internment, post-911 violence with class and dignity. The space is small but will be growing soon (they are in the midst of a Capital Campaign) but a lot is packed in. The museum is highly interactive and fun for all age groups. We loved the interactive nature of Wing Luke. The youth were entranced by the stories, pictures, and artifacts for almost 90 minutes (a miracle). They also offered lots of great interactive activities to examine your own culture and family history - it was interesting to contribute and read others contributions. I also appreciated that Wing Luke isn't stuck in the past - they focus on current issues - such as violence against Arab-Americans post 9-11. It was very interesting and ignited a great discussion in our group. The price was right - about $40 for nine people. read more

Me and my friend visited Wing Luke for the Bogagi Korean American exhibit. It was both our first times here. Despite the fact that it was a Friday afternoon, the museum was fairly empty. If you are a student, make sure to ask for student discount! Like many people have said, the 4 star is mainly for the fact that this place is an attribute to respecting and honoring the international district and overall asian Americans in PNW. It's small, but you learn a lot about the history of different ethnicities in the PNW. The Bogagi exhibit was interesting but you definitely lack to understand the exhibit if you don't really know the history of korea or is a korean American yourself. I found myself a bit lost but still very appreciative of the photographs, paintings, video clips and way more. It's not a bad place to swing by if you are in ID, maybe grabbing lunch and coming here. You can reenter the museum once you've bought your ticket. But overall, memorable museum. read more

5 stars for the Tenement/Hotel Tour, 3 stars for the rest of the museum. The tour of the historic part of the building---the shop and old hotel---is in itself worth the admission fee. The different rooms illustrate different parts of Seattle's Asian-American history, with a lot of connections to other buildings down the street and various ongoing social organizations in the neighborhood. The actual museum exhibits are less exciting. There are some interesting artifacts from local communities, and some interesting art, but the exhibits on sports and Bruce Lee were frankly not very interesting. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by how good this museum is. Having lived in Seattle for more than 5 years, I went for the first time today. Yes, the first Thursday of the month is free general admission. But that is only to view the exhibits and galleries. There is an additional charge for the live guided tour of a historic Chinatown hotel and the Yick Fung Company store, which I thought was the most fascinating part. So much history that is never really taught anywhere and well preserved. I gladly paid the $9.95 (discounted from $12.95) since at least part of it goes towards running this museum and preserving a unique part of Seattle history. Much of the first floor is more "art" done by local Asian artists, with a bit of detail about their personal backgrounds. The levels above have more historical displays and posters depicting the history of different groups of immigrants. There is also a "kids" area that I peaked at, but having two young kids myself, I don't think they'd really be interested in it. Definitely a place to spend a good 2 hours taking the tour and going through all the displays. Don't bring younger kids or they may force you to leave earlier than you wanted to. read more

This museum turned out to be a great experience thanks to Don, whose a tour guide at the museum. The ticket cost about $13 (adult) and I expected this place to be a typical museum where you just walk around and check out displays. The $13 ticket included a 30-40 minute tour guide and time for checking out some displays. This museum is small but it's full of surprises. I would write about it here but I don't want to spoil the surprise. You'll be amazed how it's a lot bigger than what it seems from the outside. What made my experience great was the tour guide. Don was very informative and passionate about the history of Asian immigrants to Seattle. As a person with Asian ethnicity, I gotta say Wing Luke Museum is impressive for what it stands for. This place is one of Seattle's treasure. A place people can go back to learn not only about being the hardships that Asian immigrants had to endure but what it means to be Asian American. Wing Luke Museum is like a time capsule hidden under ground. You dig up the time capsule and you're surprised with what you found. I have family in Japan and I hope to bring them here someday. Don was very informative about the history of Japanese Americans in Seattle that it made me want to learn more. It's surprising that Nihonmachi/Japan Town used to be 4 times the size of current China Town. This place is a must for everyone. read more
