First, these are the nicest people in the wine business. Warm and gracious and extremely knowledgable about the wine and vineyards. When we first qwnt to Noria, it was mostly superb Pinots and Chardonnay. Since, they've added a wonderful Gewürztraminer and a bomb Sauvignon Blanc as well. These are finely crafted wines from some of the best vineyards in Sonoma and beyond (no, they don't have rows of vines in Berkeley) and the bang for the buck is off the charts. I'm mostly a red drinker and only enjoy Pinots occasionally and Noria was my go-to. The addition of more white wines (and rosé) combined with my move to a warmer climate have made Noria indespensible for me. Absolutely check them out. Do yourself a favor and start at Noria, go across the street to Broc Cellars and then Donkey and Goat for a perfect wine tasting day right in Berkeley.

I mainly came to go to the Breaking the Champagne Spell: California's Great Sparkling Wine Experiment panel, which included Chris Cottrell (legend!), and Michael Cruse (Ultramarine). I learned a lot! I discovered a new favorite winery at that vendor tastings as well, The Grenachista. This guy only focuses on Grenache. I especially liked his reds! All around great event with great panels topics. It's been a few years since Noel warmly welcomed us "neighbors" into his establishment, prior to officially opening. Through the ups n Downs of Covid and him finding his business legs, we've happily supported this spot, meeting his entire family in the process. Well he is still sweet and humble but.... Busy! I mean as in this organic wine thing is... a big THING! I hi knew??? Apparently Noel did! He's graduated from the curious neighbors and locals featuring his Purity wines, to coop with a dedicated following of passionate organic wine makers and their entourage of fans , Friends devotees; restauranteurs, and media moguls all centered around the notion of organic wines aka a cast of thousands! Damn grapes never had it so good. Case and point Point now following his Instagram account lead by his bike riding enthusiast protege, Tyler, the Study hosted a massive event last weekend. We didn't plan to attend but were curious and anxious to see if it was a success or a bust. The event By the way featured more than 20 wine makers, there was food fun music and when we drove by as nosy neighbors, we heard the music pumping. Wow the crowd was massive! Standing room only spilling onto the drive way and garage bay. Of course the crowd was typical Bay Area, ethnically diverse hip, smart and totally having a blast! You may be wondering why we didn't go? We have a puppy who is bat shit cray cray. He loves people so much he would be all over anyone who say ah cute puppy and mayhem would be the result! Not to mention the wine spillage food tables rummaged. All this even tho Noel insists we bring Koa over so the team can meet him. Well maybe a lazy Thursday or Friday evening when things aren't quite off the chain.which frankly... seems to be an impossible goal. The study wine bar is chocked full of wine related happenings and the fan base has exploded! Hell I remember I had to help Noel create his Yelp account. For 2 years he had less than 10 folks commenting! Wow times have changed! To quote Steve Harvey, You go boy!!! The variety, creativity and passion of Noel and his fellow wine stompers, have the neighborhood buzzing... in a good way.

Please take that title with a grain of salt), I will say that these wines can rival any of those big named Napa/Sonoma wine labels. The difference?! They had turned part of the alley into an outdoor patio. They used bistro table and chairs and had portable heaters and a E-Z ups (I went back when it was cold outside and potential rain. The interior space has a few seats at the counter and a few at the window. The owners of the spot are super kind and their wine is divine! I took a couple bottles home and they were a hit with my family.

I was a little intimidated by the amount of folks so I swooped in for a quick drink and sat outside. The wine I snagged was great! It was a great chilled red. I sipped on that while I people watched a bit. Looks like they have tons of events coming up and I'm looking forward to coming earlier in the day in the hopes of snagging a seat at the bar. Alta Vina's a fun vibrant place to enjoy wine and hang out. Above all, that's the feeling you get when you come in: chat with proprietor Henry, or one of his staff, the grab a comfy chair or a spot at the bar. I'm super thankful that Henry took this space on after Minimo bowed out, and it's been incredible to see how Alta Vina has developed over the last year as Henry's not just finding his groove, but making his mark. We were just there this weekend for Queer Crush, and enjoyed how well the store supported the wine and food at the event!
