According to the East Bay Express, Schmidt's Pub is "basically your living room, but better" - that does sum it up, except that very few of us have living rooms anything like this, with a cozy fireplace surrounded by comfy armchairs and rustic tables beside sunny windows. Not many of us have living rooms with Old Speckled Hen on tap, or populated with an entertaining parade of quirky folk and friendly dogs. If the people and dogs are not entertaining enough then pick up a copy of Calvin and Hobbes or A History of Clay Pipes (okay, I made that one up) and have a little retreat with a pint. 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these factors: * Beer on tap (transported in reusable kegs) has a much lower footprint compared to bottles or cans. * Allows you to bring your own food, which is good for folk like vegans who are often more comfortable with BYO. * The snacks available at the counter could be a bit more Berkeley (or Albany)! They were mostly from big corps - Lays chips (PepsiCo) and chocolate bars from Mars. Would be nice to see a more imaginative/ethical selection. * A great community space with an inclusive atmosphere. Schmidt's is home to many groups (e.g., knitting) and provides a second family for many, some who send postcards from their trips! * Finally, we shouldn't underestimate the importance of having a place to slow down, reflect and connect with each other a little. In that respect, Schmidt's Pub is worth its weight in gold.

If you did a blind tasting without looking at the names of the beer, you might not even notice the subtle flavors like hojicha cream ale or Vietnamese coffee lager. I like that these names/descriptions are Asian. I liked most of the local comedians they had. My only complaint is the people sitting near us were talking too loudly and I couldn't always hear the comedians. I wish the earlier comedians would've made a joke about the noise level to make them stop talking so loudly. Street parking was surprisingly easy to find in this area. The restaurant next door, 310, can deliver food through the hidden door between the two businesses. I think this place would be great for a date night or girls night out / boys night out. It's so chill, has good drink options, and service was good too.

If you don't care to read the story about my drama, just know that everyone who works there, from the bartenders to the security guards to possibly the manager and owner (not sure, I didn't ask who they were, sorry!) were so sweet and kind and helpful to me when they really didn't have to be, and I am forever grateful!!! I won't include the full story that I subjected them all to when I came in, but, essentially, some horrid drama with my friends happened one night out at Tap that was partially witnessed by a security guard. I am insane and decided to do some investigating and try to talk to this security guard to hear the full truth, so I went in the next day early and talked to the sweetest bartender (Allison, I think) who listened to my whole story and texted the security guard for me to get more details! Such a girl's girl. I then came in again the next day (insane, I told you) and literally talked to a circle of people (including Andre? the security guard - sorry if that's not how you spell it) about the whole story again. They were all so kind and helpful and apologetic and both helped with my insane investigation and also made me feel better about the whole situation! And then the next week, I came in with (other) friends, and a lovely man who I believe is the manager recognized me and gave me a drink on the house! So nice I nearly cried. Love you all very much. I don't want to subject them to more harassment by insane college girls trying to conduct investigations into their situationship's behavior, but just know if you ever truly need to lol, go in before 9pm and you will meet the loveliest people very invested in your drama.

If you come here, WATCH YOUR BANK STATEMENTS and KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS because clearly they feel comfortable adding extra charges after you leave.

If customers are waiting an hour for a course, the staff/ owners should not eat that course RIGHT IN FRONT of them. Other staff were also seen eating in the back while customers sat there with nothing. Outrageous disregard for customers.
