Today was what I called "Tasting wine with your sister day ". My sister Cassandra H/ fellow Yelper. Sent me a link to check out a wine tasting at Wine Shoe. And yes immediately bought my ticket. The host/owner of Wine Shoe offered a small cheese board to along with your tasting. For an additional small fee of course. Wine Shoe is a small beautiful quaint cellar. A perfect date night spot to try some new wines or even have a small wine gathering with some friends. Today we tried 4 Rosé wines. Out of the 4 ideally enjoyed just 1but like another. They other 2 was too dry for my liking. But I did leave with 1 bottle that the owner introduced to me. I'm sorry I keep saying owner but for the life of me I can't remember her name or her husband's name. We came here to celebrate my cousin's birthday. I have been to the area multiple times and never knew Wine Shoe was there. Im glad I had the chance to stop by and check them out! My husband and I found this wine location while visiting a Yelp event. We walked in and were transformed into a cozy welcoming space with a wall lined with wines! Like most wine stores, the region and description of the wine is nearby. What makes Wine Shop stand out? The Wine Shop doesn't just sell wines they sell an experience. We joined their wine club. We attended our first event. They pick six wines from different geographical areas and have a wine tasting social once a month. You sample the wines and depending on your membership, pick (three or six) wine bottles after experiencing them. It's included in your membership fee. We enjoyed tasting the wine and actually picking wines we know we will enjoy. We have poured out too many bottles of wines we highly disliked. It was our first time holding an event like this, which as an event planner, had me a bit nervous. However, the experience was excellent! The owner, Krishna (I hope I didn't spell that wrong), was great with communicating with me to get the event planned. When we entered, the place was so cute. It really captured a Tuscany ambiance. The ladies working with us were fantastic. Anja was a sweetheart and was leading the team that night. They knew exactly what they were talking about and enjoyed speaking to our attendees individually about the different wines. It was a social tasting, so it allowed everyone to go at their own pace and offer opportunities to network with one-another. We also ordered the charcutier board which came out looking absolutely exquisite. Hands down the best wine tasting class I've been to in Atlanta. What I love about this place is that it's great for the ones totally new to wine and also for those who know some but would like to improve their wine palettes. It's in a trendy area and the decor suits well with its neighborhood. Once you get in, you feel like being at a boutique wine store. Their wine selection is endless. There is dining table in the middle where the wine tasting is conducted. All the guests are seated at the table and that makes the whole event very causal and social. The wine educator/instructor is very friendly and tries his best to engage you. I especially liked his pace as he doesn't try to rush you through tastings and takes his time to answer and questions one may have during the class. Came here for a wine tasting to celebrate a friend birthday and the Groupon didn't hurt either. Before I speak about the tasting, there is parking in a garage around the back. I went on a Saturday evening so don't know if it's free all the time or just for the hours I went. Now, for the tasting, the guy who gave it to us were SUPER knowledgeable and very personable. Just discovered the Wine Shoe through a Scoutmob for their wine tasting on Thursdays. I must say that this has definitely made my week. The Wine Shoe is a boutique wine store in the Castleberry Hill neighborhood. It gives you the feel of an old wine cellar in a rustic country with its wooden tables and wall of wine. This is not your cookie cutter wine selection at the local supermarket. We were taken on a tour of wines with Jay Prince who was able to answer ALL questions about the Wine life. He was very knowledgeable and personable. He didn't rush us to taste and leave but to sit sip and enjoy the wine and the conversation. There is ample parking and they also offer a VIP wine club. I went there last night for "Paws for Wine," an event that included your four-legged loved one(s). My two pups and Matt and I ventured across the street and were warmly greeted by the owners, Norah and her husband Shannon. They are both so welcoming and kind, and they have a beautiful beautiful dog, Barron. I loved the tried wines, and after looking through the selection, I am anxious to go get myself a bottle pronto. It is atypical for a wine store to have such friendly and accomodating people working there, but you are sure to find it here. Back to the most important part, where on Earth can you find a wine store that opens its doors to your pup?! I posted some pics of the event- it was great fun, the puppies got to enjoy one another's company, and they got to taste various bones as well (hehe, that was a joke although there were bones for them!). It's a beautiful shop, staffed by friendly and generous people. They had an excellent selection of wines from all over the world and were eager to open them up and sample them. Wow! We had a great time tonight at the wine tasting class. It was a great idea for date night, especially since we both really wanted to get up on our wine game. She's a red, Port, to be exact, drinker, and I prefer whites. We had the most AWESOME, incredible wine expert/teacher EVER, named Jay! He was personable, funny, in the age group of most of the class 30-46, and boy oh boy- did he ever know about WINE. The class lasted 2 hours. Sadly, it IS true, there are NO snacks. Nope, not even the crumb of a cracker. However, there is some really good wine, and some really good knowledge. The shop is really tastefully done, nobody tries to sell you anything, although the opportunity is certainly there, if you so desire. I got this via a Living Social deal, and was expecting the "Groupon/Living Social" experience. Yeah, you know the one. NOT this time! We were treated exceptionally well. Actually mulling over joining the wine club. If Jay is at the monthly wine club meetings, I think we could be persuaded! I attended the 101 wine class this week. I didn't know this was a 101 class - my ticket was a gift from a friend. I have taken many wine classes before this, but hey, I love to try new wines, so why not? To say I wasn't very pleased with the class is would be an understatement. I arrived early, and there was some crazy woman in a suit outside the front door having a major meltdown/shouting match on her cell phone. I thought to myself, I hope she is not one of the students in this class - who wants to be around this lady. I was very surprised to discover that she was our instructor for the night (Teresa). As an instructor, she is biased completely towards European wines. Fine. European wines are great. But she essentially indicated that all Californian wines are a mix of pesticides, oak powder and other additives. I don't think that is completely true. There are some excellent craft wines in California, and after traveling to almost every country in Europe, I can say that every country has their bulk "crappy" wines, and also their more artful selections. As an instructor she offered false information (seriously - 90% of the world does not drink wine every night with their dinner), and rewarded students for buying into her worldview. If you don't agree with her, it is simply because you are not sophisticated enough. She yelled at students for talking, she yelled at students for holding their glasses incorrectly, she simply yelled and admonished throughout the class. This brought me back to grade school again! I suggest if you go, don't plan it being a social fun event. No talking allowed! Bottom line - terrible instructor, overpriced class. Feel free to have your own opinion - I always do. read more

Found this place on accident and love it. It's a wine shop that you can drink after paying for the bottle and a small corkage fee. The owner is super knowledgeable and every single wine we tried we loved. They also have affordable tastings on certain days and events at times. During Flux 2011, the Wine Shoe had a wine tasting. My friend decided he wanted to taste the wines, and the woman behind the register convinced me to do it as well by ensuring us that we could begin with the tasting and come back instead of tasting all at once. The cost was 10 bucks for about an ounce of 8 wines. The woman pouring wines was pleasant, but a bit kooky. I have to say he demeanor was a bit off-putting. I was not sure if she was just eccentric or a bit tipsy. The wines were ok but there was only one I found noteworthy. I met the owner who seemed very nice. She was in a great mood and shared a bit about her own life. I always like "stories" that accompany the result of people's dreams. Though she was the most pleasant, she was not really working. When we returned, we asked for another (small, cheap) plastic cup to finish our tasting. The woman behind the counter, who told us to come back and skip the line, looked at us like we were awful. She questioned why we hadn't kept our cups. When I repeated the request, she said, "Really!? You guys are killing me." I was totally taken aback. I offered to give her a couple bucks for the cup. But she snorted and thrust the cups at us. I apologized for "killing her." We quickly left. I won't return if that is what is acceptable customer service. Breathe and smile, politely explain if something is a bother, but to be passive aggressive and rude is unacceptable. read more

My boyfriend took me here for the wine 101 class, and we both had a blast! First, the space is very welcoming. The decor and the huge family style table encourages a laid back, interactive atmosphere. Teresa was our instructor for the class, and she was both personable and entertaining--and ofcourse she knew her stuff regarding wine. After the tasting was over, she recommended several great places to eat and we ended up meeting 4 other people from the tasting at Noni's on Edgewood Ave. I had a great time with my boyfriend here, but I could easily see this as a fun outting for several types of groups (there was a bridal party in our class). We were treated by great friends to share in a wine 101 class (or was it the "Best Sellers"? Our wine expert seemed to be on the fence back and forth in that regard- :)) The hostess Amanda was very friendly and accomodating, as we came in late due to traffic. The lady who actually took us through our wine tasting "tour around the world" seemed knowledgable about the 6 different wines we tasted, and told stories about her visits to some of the wineries, describing her interactions with the people who own the small wineries. Wine Shoe purportedly only buys their wine from non-commercial small-time wineries. It was a good experience to taste some grapes I've never had (1999 Prospero Zinfandel which was pretty out of this world)-- or never even heard of before (Toscone(?) 2008). We left with 2 bottles of the Zinfandel and one bottle of the Toscone. Wine Shoe aims to be a place where you can learn about and taste wine in a less pretentious atmosphere- I honestly don't know whether that's 100% possible, but they did a pretty decent job this past Saturday. Went for a wine tasting on wines from Portugal. The space is BEAUTIFUL and I could definitely see renting it out for a wine tasting event with friends. Most of the wines were ok, not fantastic, but a decent representation of the region. The final wine was from Washington and it was delicious. When someone asked a question about using a vinturi (aerator), the owner pulled one out and encouraged everyone to try two pours of the next wine to see whether we could taste a difference. I thought it was nice that she was so accommodating. All in all, it made for a fun night; I met new people, tried new wines and will happily try it again. read more

I live near by, but won't say I'm biased per se, mainly because the bottom line is that a little shop like this is a welcome addition to any neighborhood, like Castleberry Hill and we are glad to have Nora and Shannon Wiley join us and choose our neighborhood. They offer great varietals and blends and most of the wines are from smaller, less well-known vineyards, which can make for interesting finds and stories. The price range is a nice variety of low/moderate to high so whatever you are looking for you are sure to find! Wine tastings are becoming Wednesday night regular events and Paws for Wine events, where 4-legged friends are welcome are Thursdays. They are involved in the neighborhood association and are always there offering a smiling face and open bottle. I love this place. I come here at least once a week (and sometimes twice or three times!) to pick up a bottle and always feel happy and right at home in this adorable little space! As someone who drinks lots of wine but is still pretty dense when it comes down to actual knowledge of different varieties, I appreciate that I can provide a little summary of what I'm needing for that particular day (a white to drink with pesto pasta on a picnic, a red that a typically non-wine drinking person might like, etc.) and they will always give me exactly what I'm looking for, without making me feel like a dummy, and at a great price too! I have also done a tasting with them during one of the art strolls as well as a class (on my birthday!) and both were super fun and interesting experiences that I plan on repeating. One of the best parts of this place if you have a canine companion is that they are extremely dog friendly. Not only has my pug attended both the tasting and class, but I usually bring her along anytime I even just stop in to pick something up. Love that! I must admit to being a little puzzled in regards to some of the other reviewers assessments of Nora and Teresa. I actually always really look forward to seeing them! Nora, the owner, is a permanent fixture behind the counter, and has never been anything but extremely friendly, helpful and accomodating. Teresa is hilarious and adorable! She never fails to shower my (already completely spoiled) dog with tons of attention, making it one of Frances' favorite destinations! I know that at the tastings, they use the cups as like markers for who is participating, so maybe that is why they aren't able to just hand them out to everyone? Also, one little tip is that there is a free parking garage around the back of the building so you can avoid street parking, which is a big plus. I learned that this shop is engaged in educating folks about wine, and they seem to do tastings regularly. I explained some of my preferences and was given a few bottles to choose from. Uncorked this evening and thoroughly enjoyed the cab Sauvignon form Washington that I picked up. Venue is located in Castleberry Hills and parking on the street was available but could potentially be tight. The bottle I picked was around $20. I've attended 3 wine classes at the Wine Shoe over the last ~3 years. I've had a different instructor each time, and really enjoyed my experience! The last time I was in there (last month), it seemed pretty clear that Teresa - who is mentioned frequently in these reviews - was no longer teaching classes there, so that may make new customers feeling nervous about their trips after reading these reviews feel a bit more at ease. I had her for one class and had a perfectly pleasant experience, but she is kooky and I am not necessarily surprised that she's rubbed some people the wrong way. Joe, who we had most recently, was completely laid back and full of knowledge. He was able to answer both the basic and the extremely advanced questions and seemed equally interested in addressing the questions at both ends of the spectrum. They have a really great selection of wines across a broad price range. I love the discount you get on purchases made after class - I always enjoy bringing my favorites home! Pam A and I went to a Italian wine class one evening late in 2011. Our teacher, the nutty Teresa, is really into wine and gives a unique perspective about her experiences. I certainly learned a lot about wine, especially how most American wines are the devil because they contain sulfites and other chemicals. The location is definitely ghetto-fabulous so watch yourself when you're walking around there. Even saying that, I love it when nice places can get people into slightly sketchy locations. You know it must be good. They didn't push to buy their wines, but made it easy to do so. The wines we had were pretty tasty, but none really spoke to me as much as they spoke to Teresa. As long as you're cool driving to a slightly sketchy neighborhood and dealing with a very whacky wine professor I certainly recommend the classes. Their normal prices are pretty high, but you can always find BOGO discounts. read more

I came in very skeptical. I was actually mad at myself for the $25 groupon impulse buy. Came in for the Bestsellers Wine Class and it turned out to be better than I expected. The royal seating in the middle of the store is a bit intimidating but you relax soon after the toast. Ted taught us about Vinicode, a wine characterization system he invented. He wasn't snooty at all, and even confessed that he likes some grocery store brands like Rex & Goliath! Way to keep it real. He kept it flowing when I found ones I liked. Overall, the class was informative. I use the lingo I learned, and am pretty confident about wine lists at restaurants now. I learned a lot more than I would have at just a tasting. Cons: I think their wines may be a bit overpriced. Manager has a dog that roams the store and sits on the furniture. I love dogs but didn't appreciate getting dog hair on my black sweater. For my 60th birthday party I had Wine Shoe conduct a wine education for me and my out-of-town friends. We were allowed to have food catered and Jaye paired the wines with the menu. My girlfriends were blown away. The education was valuable, the wine was amazing, and Jaye provided us with a jazz ensemble with his saxophone. My girlfriends are still talking about the weekend. I just attended the wine 101 class last night - what a great time!! I had previously been to the store once, on the Friday after THE snow storm. The roads were still icy, but I had to get out, so a few friends and I went down to the Wine Shoe to see if they had any tastings going on. Nora was super sweet and they were actually doing a free tasting because the weather was still so crummy out. We decided to do a class because the previous experience had been so great. I definitely learned things that I never previously knew about wine - a burgundy can be red or white or bubbly- it's just the region! Anyhow, if you're at all considering a class, DO IT, you won't regret it!! I think we'll be going back to do the California Wines class - it was that fun! On the shop itself: the interior is beautiful and very well done. Nora does have a dog, Barron, who is just the sweetest thing. I love having an animal around at all times, so I enjoy seeing him when I stop by (he's also not an attention whore, so you can shop and NOT notice him too). The wine selection is phenomenal!! Most of the wines Nora carries, you won't find anywhere else- with that being said, at least half of the bottles are under $20.00!!!! An Amazing deal!!
