Maybe a little less variety than at, say, a Twin's Liquor in Texas, but not far off. But probably no tasting events or promotions, I'd bet. So I guess the main downside is no possibility of a liquor/wine/beer/specialty-foods superstore like Spec's in Texas, or Wine Library in New Jersey, or something like that. And the fact all the ABC stores look nearly exactly the same, like nasty old banks. I'm also surprised they open at 9AM, which is pretty early for a typical liquor store.

My husband really liked chatting with the last owner, who knew a lot about wine. He had not been since the new owner took over. I convinced him to go for a tasting, and I'm so sorry I dragged him in there on his weekend time. We were the only people tasting at the bar. Despite this the managers showed zero interest in us. It was very awkward. They asked no questions, not even how long we'd been going there. Management actively avoided us. No one wanted to talk beyond shelling out basic wine info on what they were trying to sell at the tasting. When we stepped away from the counter to look around after the tasting, they suddenly gathered with one another behind the counter to talk among themselves, leaving me somewhat confused and left to peruse the shelves alone (we were the only ones there looking at wine too) instead of taking any opportunity to approach us, get to know us, and retain local clients and entice us to want come in more often. All 4 seats were empty at the counter around them. It was a weekend night. Had I felt more hospitality, we might have bought a nice bottle of wine and sat down to talk. Instead we left. My husband just shrugged (he likes Wine Authorities anyhow) but I actually felt somewhat shocked, in all honesty. It's hard to believe they're trying to run a hospitality business. That experience was anything but fun. In fact it was stressful and a disappointing waste of time. If they want to justify their higher prices over other stores, or encourage people to drink on premises, they need much better management. Preferably people who like people. We had every intention of supporting this local business, but won't be returning anytime soon.

Louella's came up as one of the few still open after 9 PM. I checked the website, and found that they have not, one, not two, but an entire page of fortified wines and Vermouth! As a cocktail nerd, this place checked boxes I didn't even realize I had! There's half a rack of bitters and other premixes. The atmosphere on this blissfully warm night in September was dimly lit, quietly elegant ambiance music (Think Brian Eno, Volcano Choir, or Bon Iver) From outside, with two large TVs above a bar, you may think it's a typical sports bar. But no one here is drinking beer, they have pizza from down at Hutchin's Garage and various wines out on the tables out front. With real glasses. Like adults. Here in the south in a semi-pandemic semi-lock-down. After picking out three different sweet vermouth to try, I bought a glass of Dolcetto and a pre-boxed cheese/meat tray. Although the cheese was from the cooler, as it set out, it was evidently fairly fresh, because it warmed up testily. Sadly, they close at 10, so I'll have to wrap this up later. Suffice it to say, if you're looking for a place to grab a special bottle to upscale your Negroni, or just can't seem to find Pechaud's bitters anywhere, now you have a place to check out. There is an entire 85% more of the store to explore for me, since I had arrived with a narrow purpose and found it immediately. But you can bet, I'll be back. It's within walking distance of FullSteam, MotorCo, Hutchin's, Cocoa Cinnamon's Old North Durham location. They've only been open for six months, when you don't count COVID time, so give 'em some love, folks! They are the type folks we need to support!

I told her that all I really needed was to make change. She said "we don't have that" rather dismissively. I was floored. I looked around at this massive store, the cash register's, the staff the millions worth of inventory and I said "really, with all this? And she said " really, with all this". I left the store with no change. The bus didn't make change. The driver let me on for free. There is a total wine in the town where I live, but I don't think I'll be going back there.

Like a fox candle! Ha! I love seeing how they have new vegetables and produce every now and then. Back in the day before the pandemic (and maybe they still have this?), they'd have nights where there was a select menu and you could have a weeknight meal for an affordable price. Kind of like Cafeteria food. They gave you coins to pay for it, and the turn out was always so robust. It was a really nice way to get the community together and also try dishes that you probably hadn't had in a while, or even ever. I remember those events, being the talk of the town. My friends would mark on their calendars that it was a "no-cook night" and to meet them there. Fun times. I've been meaning to sign up for their owners program, that is on my to-do list. By donating a certain amount to the co-op, you become a founding member and help support the co-op. It's a sweet way to be involved and invest in the Durham community. I also love the parking situation at the co-op, you are never fighting for a place to park, and the parking spots are not razor thin. At the front of the store, there is a grassy area with picnic benches, and I find it so inviting. People are having lunch dates there, sharing snacks, and just enjoying the weather. I will say though, the co-op is one of those places that I have to remember to go to. Now that I'm writing out all that I love about it, I will continue to keep it on my mind.

All the staff are friendly and helpful, and you won't take your life into your hands if your park in their lot. Think Whole Foods, only smaller and with fewer super high-end items.
