I LOVE THIS PLACE. It is a little bit overpriced, but I love how quaint it is. I love how there's enough seating for large groups, but each area is so intimate with the couches. You can bring in food and coffee from the other shops around, so your children can keep busy with their food. Something weird is that they do not let you sample the wines. You kind of just have to trust your waiter and hope for the best. However, something that kind of bothered me the times I have been there. The server mixed up my partner and I's wine when he served it to us. We loved the one "I ordered" so much, we actually bought a bottle of it. A group of us usually come out here at least once a month; especially, when you have colder weather. Pros: Wine 101 features a very good wine selection, has a laid back atmosphere, and offers great, knowledgeable service. Cons: None. Vegetarians: I very highly recommend the vegetarian platter that features dolmas, pita, hummus, walnuts, grapes, artichokes, olive oil/balsamic vinegar, olives, and avocados. I like this one so much that I have not made it to the cheese plate yet, even after four visits. In may estimation, customer service, along with quality of product(s), is the most important aspect of any retail business. The owners of Wine 101, Debra and her husband, and their manager, Ryan, take this to wonderful levels. My girlfriend and I like this establishment so much that we have visited it four times. Unfortunately, we had a not so good experience here once. It was a chaotic night in which the owner and manager were severely short-staffed and, consequently, service suffered. We were very disappointed, until Ryan contacted me and personally invited us back for another chance. He promised a memorable experience and that is exactly what we got. I was so impressed. Ryan and the owner personally talked with us and made sure that we were comfortable and had all that we needed. I was taken aback at the level of personal service I got on our return visit. The folks at Wine 101 even comped almost our entire check. To add to their sincerity and thoughtfulness, they had a special, delicious dessert waiting for us... and Wine 101 does not even offer dessert on the menu! They made us feel almost like royalty. I love the atmosphere at Wine 101. The pond is a very nice place to sit, as the sound of the water is so soothing. The little alcove is also a comfortable, intimate place to sit. Regardless of the spot you choose, it does indeed feel like you are relaxing at home in your comfy, lighted backyard. I love the unpretentious feel of this place. Just make sure to apply plenty of mosquito repellent, which is thoughtfully provided by the management. I love the non-pretentious feel and am big fan of the live music. In addition to this location in Helotes, Wine 101 has a second location in Bulverde that I have not had the pleasure of visiting yet. Both locations can accommodate large parties, with reservations, and feature extensive wine lists, live music on certain nights, and happy hours. A part of me wishes that Wine 101 would hire a chef to create and diversify their tapas menu. This place has become one of my true favorites in all of San Antonio. This is a cute little place located in an old house in old town Helotes. Really nice rustic yet comfortable outside, a charming inside (translation : nooks, crannies, gently used furniture, bric-a-bracs placed about) make this this a very nice place to visit on year around basis. The wine list has the prerequisite Texas wines and beyond that, a nice list of wines from the traditional wine growing areas in the world. The wines are well priced with markups being decent and comparable to wine bars in this range of caliber. We have been coming to this place before we moved here and are very glad to see it has not changed much in character. The service is still friendly and if you ask for extra bread, there still is a charming generosity with which they try to fulfill requests. The tapas plates are well composed, though i feel that the seafood set is a bit sketchy at times. The vegetarian tapas are a perfect combination to support the wine with the grapes, cheeses and hummus as is the italian (?) tour which has a small but nice selection of proscuitto, salami and cheeses. I have encountered substitutions on the cheese tour, but I truthfully have never felt one needs cheese with wine. To my tongue the milk proteins the cheeses change the character of the wine (especially reds) to make them mildly unpleasant like artichokes do too. Very cute place and worth supporting! We came here after going to Helotes Creek Winery. It's so close to each other so why not? Cute establishment, outside seating was big with a chill vibe. A lot of people were drinking and eating outside but we opted to be inside because it was too hot for us. Inside wasn't too big but it was okay as well. Very great service from inside staff but horrendous treatment from outside staff. After spending an insane amount of money for a party, one employee treated 5 of us ladies and the bride to be like garbage. We were threatened to leave the property or the cops would be called, which we were walking to our cars anyways. There was no need for that treatment and derogatory comments. My wife, friends and I planned to go to Wine 101 this past weekend. We live nearby and have been often. Their Facebook page said they opened at Noon (they have now changed it). My wife really likes their food, so she didn't eat lunch and was planning to have an appetizer. We arrived on Saturday at 2, and no one was there. Luckily, they share a beer garden area with Busted Sandal, so we had a beer. Unfortunately, no one showed up until about 3. They said they were having issues with the keys, so didn't open the wine window until 3:30. Sadly, they also said the cook wouldn't be there until 4:30 or 5:00 p.m. We did order about $60 of wine at that point. Unfortunately my wife was now starving, so we got food from El Chapparal while we finished the wine. It's a shared garden area with other businesses, and their kitchen wasn't even operational, so we figured no big deal. They don't even have wait service right now because of COVID. Almost as soon as the food had arrived, an irate employee ran out of the kitchen and started screaming at us for ordering food elsewhere when they serve [usually] food. I explained to her that we had been waiting for hours, and that they weren't even serving food at this point! She said we were lying, and that their Facebook says they open at 3:00 (it didn't, I showed it to her). We explained to her that we had just ordered some wine. She never asked us to leave, and just started yelling about health code violations and went back in the trailer. About 30 minutes later, the POLICE showed up! They asked us what happened, and told us that the business was kicking us out! The employee had never politely asked us to leave, or to eat the food elsewhere, and a manager never spoke with us. They weren't even serving food, my wife was already done with the food, and we were in a space shared with other businesses. This was incredibly embarrassing and I've never had a situation like this before. We will never be back and this was some of the worst management of a restaurant or bar I have ever seen in my life. Went here with 3 girl friends for a little girls day. We had a server initially who was fantastic. Wine recommendations were excellent food was excellent. We were all having a great time talking, laughing, debating, general girls night shenanigans. A couple of hours in, our server changed over to outside and we got a new server, David. One of our friends had a particularly rough week and was ready to drink it away. She had a DD lined up before she even came. The other 3 of us were driving so after our initial two glasses we stuck with water the next 2 hours. When our friend who was still drinking ordered another two glasses from David, he said, "we'll, Who are they for?" And she said "me" and he said, "well I don't think I can serve you". We all paused and were a bit confused because our friend wasn't being belligerent, she wasn't slurring or falling over, and other than loud cackling and animated talking we were being respectful. So it was very unexpected that he was so bluntly refusing to serve her with no explanation. Not to mention at this point we were the only table inside so we literally couldn't have been disturbing anyone. We said "okaaay" and there was a long awkward pause. My (sober) friend asked if there was a restaurant policy limiting how many drinks can be served to a single patron. David said "no, I just don't think it is safe to serve her". It's hard to describe but his tone was very condescending. He had just become our server and it was a shared check, so he couldn't have actually known how many drinks she'd had, and like I said she wasn't causing any trouble and was with the three of us who were sober at this point, so we would have kept her in line and safe. So we said to David, "well we're all sober and she has a DD lined up so she won't be driving home, she's safe". He just said, "ok" and walked away from the table. At this point we didn't know if he was going to bring the wine or not bring the wine; going to get the manager, he didn't ask if she wanted some thing else like water, he didn't ask if we wanted the check he just walked away. A few minutes later he came back with the glasses of wine and the sparkling water we ordered for the rest of us. Obviously it was very awkward because we wanted to respect any restaurant policy, and we're very confused at this point as to why he said he couldn't serve her if he was going to bring the glasses of wine anyway? So in an effort to clear the air one of my sober friends asked David if she can just talk to him for a moment. In a quiet side conversation she explained that we totally support people trying to keep their patrons and others in the community safe from drunk driving or being taken advantage of, but in the future it would probably come off better if he started by asking if that person had a designated driver or if the rest of us would be taking her home or if it was a policy issue, letting us know the restaurant's drink limit policy instead of just announcing "I can't serve you" loudly and in front of everyone at the table with literally no explaination. Again David said, "well, I don't agree but ok" he was extremely defensive and condescending. Overall it came across like a man trying to tell us silly drunk women to "get a hold of ourselves". Honestly it was terrible and completely ruined our night. we decided to leave and asked for the check. We pay and go to the communal picnic tables in front of the restaurant to wait with our friend while her DD came to pick her up. David proceeded to stand outside the empty restaurant with his manager (god knows what version of events he told her) and stare at us like we were potential troublemakers or criminals, and it was their job to watch us. Again we are grown responsible women, three of us were sober and only one was intoxicated and we were with her watching to make sure she was safe. So basically there is a misogynist male server that works at this restaurant named "David". If you are going here for a girls night, beware! read more

I went here to do some shopping at Lenette's boutique, and after shopping we came to stop by to have a glass of wine, but we ended getting a bottle since on Wednesdays they have half of certain bottles. Idk where to start.. first time there I was blown away with great service... a waiter who actually knew the menu and could recommend good beers. I ask for recommendations on a good refreshing beer. She says she doesn't know the menu because she just started working on Wednesday. No offer to get someone who knows the menu. I say okay, just bring me one someone recommends... and she comes back with a $4 corona in a can. I was so disappointed but didn't want to say anything because at this point it just wasn't worth it to me. So we order our food. Got the salmon, charcuterie board and meatballs, which took a long time considering that most of the food was not hot food. So seeing how long everything has been taking, I order our brownie dessert while finishing our food so it would come out in a timely manner. So we are done eating, waiting for dessert. Dessert took another 30 min! Had to flag her down and ask where dessert was. She says, "sorry it was done a while ago but I let it sit too long so they started another one for you"... Had to get up and ask for the check. Why we still tipped ? I know how hard food service is. She was nice and I probably blame management more for lack of training of staff.
