The best I can say about the wine is that it was mediocre. The women running the place weren't very friendly, but I was on a wine tour and really didn't pay much attention to that. I was there to drink good wine! unfortunately, that's not what I got. I got five tasting tokens. I tried the Jal Spice (weird smoky flavor and bad aftertaste) the heritage (best of the bunch), the mead (decent, so i got two pours) and a red blend I can't remember (except that it tasted bad). Although I bought bottles at the other two wineries, I wasn't even tempted. The wine tasted off. The best description I can think of it that it tasted skunky, like bad beer, but also had this overwhelming wooden taste in the red ones. The mead was ok and the heritage had the least amount of aftertaste. My entire tour agreed that it wasn't worth the stop. Hope the company eliminates them from future tours. read more

This is a hidden spot and you question where or not to pull up on this semi private lot/ establishment. She is a very nice woman the owner. She has a great variety of wines and taste for all pallets. My only negative feedback is that the tasting pores are very small and not worth the tasting amount which is about $12 I believe. Her bottles generally run about $29 each. Yeah...no... Came here as part of a wine getaway weekend with Hubby and my parents. The owner (August) was very nice and we enjoyed sitting on the patio out back... But... The tasting was $16 each, even with including the cute little tasting glasses (very little-not regular wine glasses), this was ridiculous. However, we had driven all the way out there and decided we were splurging for the weekend anyway, so went for it. Wrong choice. Sorry, but not one of the wines was drinkable-to any of us, and we represent very different palates. They were all too "young" tasting-green and sour. And the lavender one had way too much lavender (reminded me of an old lady bathroom...not what one looks for in their wine). The place is a bit run down looking too and the bathroom situation is weird (you go in the laundry room of the main house and it's not too clean). I can't recommend and won't be back. read more

Rude, the staff is rude and inconsiderate. 0 stars, please avoid this place. Let's leave the wine out because Texas isn't the place to grow wine and it's just something to do. We do a tasting and we have 2 glasses left and a worker comes up and says, "We have a big group coming not to rush you but it'll probably be hard to get your wine." Alright, so I go up to the counter and ask to pay my bill and get two glasses to finish up (we haven't finished the glass we are on) she says no we can't pour you additional glasses you have to finish the glass you are on and use that glass(we couldn't possibly dirty extra glasses for you before the big crowd comes in). Uh, that's just bad service. All customers should be treated equal regardless if they're with a group or not. Their credit card machine also didn't work. When the crowd came in there would have been no way to pay or get that extra glass of wine. The place is kind of half finished and not that nice. read more

Combining the unsubtle taste of ammonia, cough syrup, and lavender, Lady Lavender is the most foul wine that has ever existed. Even prison inmates brewing alcohol in a toilet bowl couldn't make create a drink this awful. To make sure I wasn't the only one who suffered the Lavender malaise, I had my other family members imbibe. They spat theirs out and promptly declared it as the worst wine they've ever had. I didn't try the other wines here, but I don't think I want to. At least now I know what to buy my sworn enemies for Christmas (or maybe not, it is $20 a bottle). read more

The sommelier (sp?) who served us was friendly and informative. The bar they built for wine tastings is far too short. They should have have put the wine bar for tasting down a long wall. Six people barely fit. The crackers weren't in the center of the bar either but on a side table so I had to dodge bodies to get to them. Overall.....the place felt like it was a bit shabby and i didn't like the port a potty outside. If you're selling wine, and people will need to use the facilities, a winery ought to have a real bathroom instead of an outdoor shack. Its like the place needs.. I dunno..... something to make it prettier. Its just plain and utilitarian, not a place you want to sit down for a long time and relax. Then, after we had done our tasting and purchased two bottles of Brenham Blush, a guy came in and refused to do the wine tasting. He said ten dollars is outrageous. and you know, he's right. I was just so happy to be in a winery I didn't even consider the cost. But in Fredericksburg, tastings are like seven dollars and often times if you buy wine they erase the wine tasting cost. Ten dollars for a wine tasting is seriously steep but would be more forgivable if it was erased when you buy some bottles. Then the cost of their wine was $20 a bottle which is also seriously steep. Then we went to Pleasant Hill Winery in Brenham. Superior wine, enthusiastic owners who want to inform and teach without being overbearing, and $3 wine tasting. Also their wine per bottle is around $13 a bottle. There's just no comparison. Pleasant Hill puts Windy Winery to shame, better wine and better prices. After going to Pleasant Hill Winery I felt like Windy Hill Winery was a rip off and so did my travel companions. read more

Visited this winery on a cloudy Saturday afternoon and had a lovely time. The owners were very friendly and the live music by Mike Gallo (mikeGallo.net) was really nice and relaxing. I had a 6-wine tasting with a glass of the Saucy Red and my mom had the Heritage. We also shared a large bowl of homemade gumbo -- all of it delicious! I'll definitely be back. The couple that runs the place was very pleasant and accommodating. I walked in with 3 other people and we all did individual flights. It was fun and exciting! It's not the best wine I've ever tasted but it is good for an afternoon and having a good time. The Cab was the best but that is just my preference. I have to admit I wasn't impressed. I felt like we paid for quite a bit more than we got. The "tour" was basically being led around a relatively small warehouse room while the owner talked about sticking labels on bottles and using pumps to bottle. It lasted 20 minutes and I really didn't feel like I learned anything about the wine making. The tasting is not included with the tour which was highly disappointing. The tasting was another $12 and the pouring was light handed and inconsistent to say the least. I barely got a sip in a few of my tastes. A few of the wines were fine but the rest just weren't very good, certainly not in the $20/bottle category. The cheese plate was frankly awful. You would expect it to include a few high quality cheeses and breads but it was just plain block cheddar cheese and ritz crackers. Nothing to it. There not really much about it that I would recommend. The couple were very nice and hospitable, but I wish I had gotten more from the experience. The setting is cute--nice patio. read more

Celeste A gets the review pretty much right. The tasting room is pretty run down, the lone bathroom is a port a potty, the wine is pretty dang underwhelming and the cost is ridiculous for the quality. All of the wines are on the sweet side, so for some that may be their thing. For the wife and I? Not so much. The people were friendly, but after one or two tastes we couldn't stop thinking how ready we were to get on our way to the next winery, where we could sit out on a the deck, relax, and enjoy a wine we preferred. This would definitely be a one star review for me, but it gets a one star bump because they are trying to do something that is pretty unique: they exclusively use Texas grapes. I appreciate the idea of keeping it completely local-- unfortunately the results aren't to my liking. read more

Windy Winery is definitely not your fancy winery that you find in places like Fredericksburg but I loved the relax feel of the establishment. The owner's house is right on site so you feel like you are visiting family not going to a wine tasting. I did see a review about the bathrooms being not nice but they just have upgraded as they are very nice and on the side of the building, not attached to house. For $12 you are able to taste 5 wines and they are generous with their pours. Their specialty wine is Jal-Spice which is a jalapeño wine that is great for cooking according to them. Yeah guys in our group loved the Jal-Spice. They do warn you to end with it because it will change your tastebuds for the rest of the wines. I preferred their red wines over the whites which were a bit too sweet for my tastes over all. They had the menu split up in an easy way so you knew if you were getting dry or sweet wines. My personal favorite was the Sonora which was a great wine for sitting out on the porch in the Texas heat. I wish I had bought it but I will have to go back for it. They do have a dog on site (which is why it's not pet friendly) but the dog was extremely sweet. She just laid around our table and didn't bother us at all. This is not a fancy winery like some but it'a relaxed and the wines are great! read more

We went here checking out wedding venues in Brenham, and on the side of the road said Windy Winery. We decided to check it out and it was about a mile off the main road. When we pulled up there was a little shop which did not look open with a house next door. We thought to ourselves this seems a little to intimate to be a winery. We walked inside the little shop, and saw the owners of the 5 acre winery drinking coffee. We were the only people there on a quiet Sunday morning, and we shared five different sweet wines for 15 dollars. The person serving us said he would do a double sample of wine since there were two of us for no additional cost. I also got a large cheese plate for 7 dollars, and we had enough food for all our samples of wine. Windy Winery has a nice outside patio with an old vintage bench. Sitting outside was windy, peaceful, and there was a nice view of the Vineyard. The owner of the winery came outside and joined us. We talked with him about wine making, the winery, and how they came to discover Windy Winery. He talked to us for about 1 1/2 hours, and he also shared some pictures with us of recent events (BBQ) they had at the winery. The quiet, low key, and intimacy of Windy Winery make it a very special place. We could really tell how much the owner loved his winery, and wine making. People are welcome to volunteer at Windy Winery to pick grapes when they are ready to be harvested and crushed. One other aspect of Windy Winery which separates them from other wineries are that their primary selection of wines they make are sweet and semi-sweet which is typically unusual for a winery. After we left we bought a bottle of sweet wine (Yellow Rose), paid for the wine tasting, and cheese and said bye to the owner. I recommend going here on a Sunday morning if you happen to be in Brenham and have the time to stop by. I will definitely be going back again soon, but next I will be bringing some close friends. The couple that run/own the place are worth stopping by, very nice people. I had a glass of red (name of wine escapes me...blame it on the wine! ;) made from on-property grapes; it was good, not great. But what I couldn't understand is their pricing philosophy. I've been to most of the wineries in the Bluebonnet and Indepence trail grouping, plus a few independent wineries in the same general area (about 20 in total...but not all in one day ;), and this winery was by far the most expensive. Just in the direct Brennam area there are two other wineries where one had a wine tasting of 4 wines for $7.50, another 6 wines for $10, this winery was 5 for $16. I'd have given it 4 stars if the price was more in line with their "competitors". read more

My husband and I have been to the fanciest wineries in Napa but our experience at Windy Winery was so so special that we will always remember it. After spending a couple hours hanging out at the bar with the owners and locals, we felt like we had known them for years... I would call it the "Cheers" of wineries :) It's a sweet and unpretentious environment that is all about relationships and some good Texan wine... our personal favorites were the whites. I did a Chappell Hill wine tour and Windy Winery was our last stop before heading back to Houston. This was my favorite winery of the tour, and no it's not just because it was our last. They have at least 20 selections of wines from very dry to very sweet. They also allowed us to have as many tastings as we wanted. The staff were all very friendly and knowledgeable. I also ordered a cheese tray which came with some house made crackers which were delicious. They were soaked in oil, Parmesan and herbs. Wine tasting is meant to be relaxed and fun. These owners confused running a business with having friends over to the terrace. While the gentleman was kind and accommodating with clear boundaries, his wife was blatantly rude to our entire group. With failed eye contact and disdainful body language I was hurt and taken aback by such unChristian behavior. But considering I was buying $70 worth of wine - 2 ports and 1 red (same small size of the port) you would think they wave the wine tasting fee - not here. But whatever! The Windy Winery has been my family's place of choice now for the last few years. The owners are loving and caring and make you feel like you are a part of their family when you visit. I went to Windy Winery with family and friends on February 29, Leap Day! Most of the wines were very bad. And a couple were terrible. They infuse wines with lavender, pecans, jalapeno, and other flavors to the point where the wine is no longer evident. Why? Maybe the wines are really bad on their own. Two unflavored wines tasted sour and one was strongly reminiscent of the aroma of horse manure. Perplexing. You can't rinse your glass at the bar, rather you must walk to the next room--why? We asked a nice young lady, Elizabeth, to tell us about the wines and old Linda interrupted that they were too busy to talk to us and slammed down a wine description for us to read; only the descriptions were mostly stories not related to the wines. We went to Windy Winery today even though it was grape stomping day. We have traveled all over the United States to literally hundreds of wineries, and have learned that some of the best wines are not in the most beautiful or updated settings. So, we had an open mind. However, we have never paid $11.00 for a tasting. When we have paid over a couple dollars to taste, we either get the fee waived if we purchase some wine OR at the very least, we get the glass after tasting. The setting at Windy Winery was crowded. It is a bit tacky. There is a minimal selection of gifts for purchase ( a plus at many wineries). The restroom is inconvenient. The wines are not that great. I would pay 11.00 for good wines, a beautiful setting and at least a glass. Disappointing. read more

August and Linda are some of the nicest hosts I've ever met! Negatives: A few wines were not that great (I wasn't a fan of the saucy red), and there were no grapes (it's winter time). Positives: They were fun to talk to and eagerly attended to everyone in our group with palate cleansers, fun stories, and details on how the wine is made. The tour was nice and I wish I had come at another time so we could actually participate in the process. We anticipated to sit outside, which was perfectly fine, however, even with that the way the owners wife response came across was abrupt, rude, and uncalled for. We understand this is a business. However, not all customers are locals and sometimes that would take a little accommodation. We were within an hour of closure and were willing to tie our dogs up so we would be able to try your wine. Linda and Augie are always a joy to visit with and they make some outstanding wines; my favorites are Saucy Red, Yellow Rose and the Ports, my husband prefers the Chardonnay. This winery has a casual atmosphere with good wines at a reasonable price. The owners enjoy conversations with their customers and happily refer folks to other wineries in the region.
