This review is long overdue - back in May, my fiance and I went horseback riding with Joseph at Windwalker Expeditions. We had such a phenomenal time, the experience couldn't have been any better. Joseph knew everything there is to know about the desert, the plants, and the wildlife. He was able to answer any question we had, while also providing additional information. He was very kind, patient, and supportive while we were learning how to horseback ride (we each had gone when we were kids, but hadn't been on a horse in more than a decade). He also helped us take photos and videos, so now it's very special to look back on our experience and see those photos and videos. The horses were absolutely beautiful and it really seems like Joseph takes wonderful care of them. We had the absolute best time and are so grateful for Joseph. This is the 3rd year we've traveled to Arizona for Spring Training and now will add this to our now annual horseback riding adventure. Always a pleasure the horses are the best the guides are phenomenal especially Joseph our guide was very informative and he has the best Arabian horses I've ever ridden. I'm an experienced rider and my daughter is now an intermediate we love the variety of trails you can run trot it's great and very memorable event. If you're looking for nose to tail trail boring ride this is not for you, however, if you're looking for a most memorable ride with the most beautiful scenery this is the place to go. Book in advance they do have quite a lot of regular customers that return every year. If you're a novice, intermediate or experienced rider they can accommodate all and you will not regret the most amazing riding adventure! read more

My wife and I did the private 2 hour horseback trail ride through the Tonto National Forest. It was an excellent way to see the amazing desert. Our guide Bill planned a great ride and gave us a really enjoyable 2 hours to start our weekend. Well-kept horses, a demonstrated respect for the desert and a really informative and friendly guide. Unfortunately our group didn't get a chance to experience riding with this company because they ended up canceling on us without any advance warning. We showed up twenty minutes early, after getting directions over the phone from Diane, their customer service representative. We waited for over 30 minutes at the meet up location and nobody showed up. We had to reach out to find out what was going on, and were told that the guide will not show up because of icy trails. It was clear that it was a made up excuse to cover for a booking issue that this company refused to own up to. We ended up contacting 2 other nearby companies that confirmed that the ice was not an issue and they were offering normal service. Windwalker wasted our time and money (gas for the long drive) and I would strongly recommend avoiding doing business with this highly unprofessional company. read more

This company is absolutely amazing. We went on a horseback ride with them in the Cave Creek desert and both my girl and I are novice but they brought horses which were so well trained it was a breeze to get on and start riding. I was nervous for about 10 minutes and then ready to do a little trotting, and my horse didn't require a kick like the stable horses I'd ridden in the past, rather just a little pressure and he was off. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for as the horses are all personal pets not stable horses. Our guide owned his own and had four of them, all arabian and gorgeous. read more

My wife and I went out for the morning with our guide, Kim. This was the best experience on horses that we've ever had. The trip was personalized for us according to our ability and interest. Kim was very knowledgeable about the desert and the local trails- and exceedingly good with the horses. The horses were also hand picked according to our size and weight. Kim made sure that we were OK with the trails and hills early in the ride before committing to longer sections. The entire experience was designed personally for us. What a great time! We both have been on rides which have had us riding in a long line of horses, always walking, and always on a predetermined course. While those were still good experiences, this was enormously better! Expensive?.. not really, when you look at the experience. This was all-around the best value ever! Thanks, Windwalker! read more

Simply the best!!! Great horses and great people... and the rides are an amazing way to experience the sonoran desert and its beauty. 3 of us enjoyed a beautiful ride through Tonto National Park. It was rather sedate for my taste (minimal trotting, mainly walking) but I had told them when booking the ride that my son was very uncomfortable around horses so our pace may have been a reflection of that. Regardless, it was nice to be outdoors exploring a new area on horseback. read more

Absolutely fabulous experience. Great people to work with from scheduling with Dane to the actual two hour ride in the Tonto National Forest with Clydea. I am a novice rider and my 19 year old daughter rides for her college equestrian team and we both had a fantastic time. My daughter rode English and was given the freedom to trot and gallop on her own, while I rode Western and, once Clydea was sure that I was comfortable, was also given the freedom to stretch my horse's legs out. Beautiful scenery, Clydea very knowledgable about the local plants, and just a great time. Not cheap at $150/person, but definitely worth it. read more

Sunrise, 90mins tour for group of 5 novices. $120 per person minus 10% discount + tax + tip. I think many of their customers are more advanced, but they were great/patient / friendly with our group of novices/never been on horse. Walked with occasional trot. One guide gave some running discussion about flora / natural history; perfect since we just wanted to ride and see, didn't need a cowboy shtick. They showed us a little peak, a valley, a juniper tree made into a "clubhouse"... All in all perfect for us East Coasters who just wanted a little taste of the desert. What an outstanding experience! I had not been riding in around twelve years and this was the best ride ever! Mr. Joseph took me on a private exploration in the desert. He let me ride Turbo ... a wonderful horse! When a horse lover wants to go horse back riding, nothing is better than getting a horse that wants to go on a ride too! There were just the two of us, so no long "nose-to-tail" line of folks. Joseph is a great guide through the desert which is important because there were no well worn trails where we went! The horses on my trip were very well maintained, trained and experienced horses that enjoyed exploring the area. It was such a treat to find Windwalker Expeditions (thank you Boulders concierge)! Mr. Joseph knows so many interesting facts about the desert, horses and people. He was so easy to talk to and gave me some great riding tips. I Highly recommend Mr. Joseph and any ride you go on with him. English or western style, young, or old (or the whole family) I believe he can provide a personalized and satisfying experience! My girlfriend and I decided to use windwalkers after careful consideration of many horse ranches and experiences because they custom each ride for each rider. My gf is an extremely avid rider and grew up with many horses on her ranch in south africa. I am extremely amateur and could not post or trott the horse, but surely after this ride I was riding like a pro! Joseph, the owner of Windwalkers, was our guide and this man knows his trails and absolutely takes care of you, the horses and the trails. The ride was majestic from the beginning and even went over the 2 hour time frame which we absolutely loved to experience such great horses for longer. His horses are kept as family and are extremely well behaved. Jasper, was my black stallion who knew the trails! If you are wondering why there are little reviews it's because they don't get much business from the resorts but to me they were the BEST option and nothing else compares. Thank you Joseph! read more
