This is my first Lions Review over 2 stars. What a year. Although it ended one game too early,…read more it was fun and exciting. Can't wait until next year. Forward down the field baby.

When I review sports teams on Yelp, I typically rate based on team performance. For example,…read morewin-loss record and number of championships won. However, for teams that I'm actually a fan of, it's hard not to show bias. The Detroit Lions are one of those teams. Well, I guess maybe not so much the Lions, but one of their - and, more widely, the NFL's - greatest players of all time, wide receiver Calvin Johnson. Calvin played college football at the same time that I was an undergrad at Georgia Tech. He's my favorite football player, past or present. One of my fantasy football teams has been named after his nickname, Megatron, for over a decade now. Calvin played for Detroit from 2007 through 2015. He was loyal. His entire nine-season career in the NFL was with the Lions. During those nine years, he was a six-time Pro Bowler, twice the NFL receiving yards leader (2011, 2012), the NFL receptions leader in 2012, and the NFL receiving touchdowns co-leader in 2008. He holds the league records in most receiving yards in a season (1,964) and most consecutive 100-yard receiving games (8). Calvin was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in February 2021 when he was only 35 years old. In the year immediately following his retirement from pro football (2016), Calvin finished in 3rd place, behind winner Laurie Hernandez (Olympic gymnast) and runner-up James Hinchcliffe (race car driver), on the 23rd season of ABC's Dancing with the Stars. As a Georgia Tech fan, something I found funny about Calvin's time with the Lions is former Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford was the starting QB in Detroit from 2009 through 2015. Stafford was the guy throwing Calvin touchdown passes for the majority of Calvin's pro career. Rivals Tech and UGA could finally unite on something football-related. Calvin and Stafford were only able to lead Detroit to the playoffs twice, in 2011 and 2014. Stafford threw two TD passes to Calvin in the 2011 Wild Card game on the road against the New Orleans Saints. Unfortunately, both games ended in losses. To date, neither player has won an NFL playoff game. The Lions were a fixture in the playoffs in the 90s with six appearances. However, aside from that stretch, since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger (which largely produced the league as we know it today), Lions playoff appearances have been few and far between. The Lions did win the NFL championship in 1935 and three times in the 50s: 1952, 1953, 1957. For reference, the first Super Bowl was played in 1967. The team has played in the 65,000-seat Ford Field since 2002. The glory days of the 90s were played in the larger, 80,000+ seat Pontiac Silverdome. Like the old Silverdome, Ford Field is also a domed stadium. A couple events the Silverdome was known for are the 1982 Super Bowl (XVI) and WrestleMania III in 1987. The latter is famous for one of the greatest pro wrestling matches ever. No, not the main event that pitted Hulk Hogan against Andre the Giant for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship, but the WWF Intercontinental Championship match between Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat and "Macho Man" Randy Savage. Look it up!

The team has won four World Series titles (1935, 1945, 1968, and 1984) each marking a distinct chapter in Detroit's cultural and industrial evolution. Legendary players like Ty Cobb, Hank Greenberg, and Al Kaline helped shape the Tigers' identity, while the team itself has remained a symbol of resilience and pride for a city that knows both triumph and hardship. But I'm only a fan of the Detroit Tigers as far as Tom Selleck goes. His Tigers cap became a signature part of his character Thomas Magnum. Born in Detroit and a lifelong Tigers fan, Selleck insisted on wearing the cap to reflect his own roots. The hat's presence on national television helped popularize it beyond the ballpark, turning it into a pop culture icon. Selleck even trained with the Tigers during spring training in 1991 to prepare for his role in Mr. Baseball, further cementing his connection to the team. I was at Comerica Park on August 19 2025 and watched the Detroit Tigers edge out the Houston Astros in a tense 1-0 victory that took ten innings. A true defensive matchup by great pitchers - only nine hits for the whole game and in the end, a bases-loaded walk decided the game. [Review 986 of 2025 - 465 in Michigan - 24540 overall]

The Detroit Red Wings referred to as the Wings are a professional ice hockey team based in Detroit…read more The Red Wings compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference. They are one of the Original Six teams of the league. The original Six definitely have a place in my heart. I grew up watching them. The Detroit Red Wings have won the Stanley Cup ELEVEN times! Seasons as follows:(1935-36, 1936-37, 1942-43, 1949-50, 1951-52, 1953-54, 1954-55, 1996-97, 1997-98, 2001-02, 2007-08). One of my favorite players Gordie Howe made his debut and left his mark in the history of my favorite sport. I'm giving them five stars. If I can't catch them in a live game I can still watch them on TV. Support your team!!

The Detroit Red Wings are one of the all-time great NHL teams. The Red Wings (11) are second only…read moreto the Montreal Canadiens (24) and Toronto Maple Leafs (13) in total number of Stanley Cup championships won. All three teams are members of the Original Six that also includes the Boston Bruins (6), Chicago Blackhawks (6), and New York Rangers (4). Combined, the Original Six account for 64 Stanley Cup victories out of the 95 total Stanley Cup championships won by any active team to date. The Original Six have won the Stanley Cup an overwhelming 67% or two-thirds of the time. Of their 11 Stanley Cup victories, the Red Wings had two "dynasties" or sustained periods of championship success: (1) The early to mid 1950s and (2) the late 1990s into the early 2000s. Detroit won the Stanley Cup four times in the early 1950s (1950, 1952, 1954, and 1955). The team's best-known player during that stretch was "Mr. Hockey" Gordie Howe. The Hall-of-Famer played right wing for the Red Wings for 25 seasons, starting with the 1946-47 season and ending with the 1970-71 season (his last in the NHL). His 26-season NHL career is a league record for seasons played, tied with Chris Chelios (who also played for and won a championship with the Red Wings). Howe is second only to the "Great One," Wayne Gretzky, when it comes to the number of Hart Trophies (regular season MVP) won (Gretzky 9, Howe 6). In terms of career NHL goals, assists, and points, Howe ranks in the top 10 in each category. Another Hockey Hall-of-Famer, Scotty Bowman, was head coach of the Red Wings during their successful late 90s/early 2000s run. It was Bowman's 1997 Stanley Cup championship team that broke the franchise's 42-year championship drought (the longest such drought at the time). Bowman would lead Detroit to back-to-back titles as the Red Wings won again in 1998. Bowman retired in 2002, but not before winning his third Stanley Cup as Red Wings coach (and record ninth Cup as an NHL head coach). Yet another Hall-of-Famer, current Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman, was the captain of the 1997, 1998, and 2002 championship teams. He was drafted with the No. 4 overall pick in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft and played his entire 22-season NHL career with Detroit. Upon the completion of his playing career, "The Captain" joined the Red Wings' front office in 2006. It was there he won a fourth Stanley Cup championship, but as a team executive instead of a player. Yzerman won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1998 (Stanley Cup Playoffs MVP) with Mike Vernon winning the year prior and Nicklas Lidstrom winning in 2002. The Red Wings are currently in the middle of an uncharacteristic, poor stretch. They've missed the postseason every year since 2017. Detroit finished dead last in the Eastern Conference in 2020 with a 0.275 points percentage. It was the worst points percentage since the Atlanta Thrashers finished with a 0.238 points percentage 20 years prior (2000).
