My husband and I have lived here for 4 years, and omg...do not move here unless you like crappy-ily constructed buildings, with rent that's only $75 less than a newer apartment down the street. The reason we have not moved is because we are savings for a house and do not want to move into another apartment then move into a house....moving twice within a short time period sucks!
The floors in these apartments SUCK - they slope and creak so bad! Unless you're on the ground floor of course, but then you have to worry about flooding, the resident scorpions, and creepy crawlies (if you live back towards the field anyway, I don't know about the rest of the complex). And your utility bill will skyrocket if you don't pay attention to it because the insulation is missing, and there are cracks and openings around every door and window, letting your heat and a/c out. My husband and I live in a 'noise sandwich', which is slowly turning into a 'noise taco' , aka the middle floor in a 3 story building.
The water in our kitchen smells like fish...it makes everything in our dishwasher smell like fish. You can't wash your dishes by hand to avoid that b/c you're still using the same fish water. We bought a water filter, to insure we were drinking safe water, and that even smells like fish b/c the cooling unit in our fridge makes everything smell like fish. Yuck.
I'm thankful that we have a laundry hook up in our apartment, it saves trips to the laundry mat - that earns one star. The other star is for the water being pro-rated to the building, so it doesn't turn out that bad. The rest of the stars are missing because my husband's truck has been vandilized 5 times over the course of our time there. It has been shot with a BB gun twice (had to replace the windshield), spray painted with a racist sign, egged, and paintballed. We alerted the office about every incident, and one of the maintenance guys asked my husband what he did to have his truck spray painted with a racist sign. We don't talk to anyone, we didn't do anything! He was accusing my husband of a racist crime or something. Not cool.
I've seen drug deals happen in the field in the back of the complex. Lots of hobos for neighbors - they've set up a makeshift city on the other side of the fence so you see them walking around every once in awhile. There are police helicopters monitoring the area about once a week....really loud, with searchlights.
Also, about a year and a half ago, during one of the tornado storms, part of our outer wall was blown off. Part of it was shotty construction, and the building being over 25 years old, and part of it was the storm. Stuff happens - my note about this is that it took the apartment complex over 3 months to repair it. Meanwhile our upstairs neighbor's ceiling was exposed to all kinds of rain, and there was nothing between us and the elements except for a thin piece of sheetrock. I could hear the wind and rain beating on the wall while I slept, like worse than normal. Not a good 3 months - it rained a LOT, which is part of the reason the repair took so long. We knew our wall had to be molding and turning to mush. In the complex's defense they did put up a piece of plastic over the damage, but the wind blew it off and made this horrible flapping noise all day and night. The complex came out to repair it one time, and that helped a little.
Speaking of mold, did you know that mold could be repaired with paint? Neither did I! According to this complex's maintenance staff, painting over mold repairs it. We have mold in our 2nd bedroom closet from our upstairs neighbor's a/c leaking through their floor - I say 'have' instead of 'had' because it's starting to come through the paint. Repaired...right.
