We had Ken Gillett replace ten windows in our old (1890) house. All aspects of his work, and our interaction with Ken, were excellent. He was recommended to us by Truitt & White in Berkeley, a Marvin retailer. Ken was a timely and clear communicator, fully transparent about the constraints and tradeoffs that are inevitable with a retrofit, and skilled at explaining complexities around dimensions, material options, and so on. It was obvious from the get-go that he is very knowledgeable about window technology and options (he travelled a professional training session at Marvin HQ in Minnesota to up his skills during the time we were working with him in planning), and up to date on building code. Ken's work was fast, fairly priced, and flawless. I was convinced, ahead of the job, that we would need to paint around the windows, given how invasive it is to completely remove a decades-old double-hung window with an entirely new frame and windows. But that was not the case - the new windows were perfect as installed, and no painting was needed. Ken is also principled. Ken made clear that in our bedrooms, we needed to use a casement window In order to meet egress code, and then worked with us to ensure that those casement windows looked Ike traditional double-hung windows to match the rest of the house. Also, one scheduling snafu (a manufacturer's error in the dimensions of one of the ten windows) resulted in a delay, with 9/10 of the windows in place. We offered to pay Ken for the 90% of the job that was completed, but he was adamant that he would not accept payment until the job was done. If you're looking for a no-BS window contractor, I highly recommend Ken. read more
