Wow - the hype is true. Get in line! Don't try to put your name on a list, just get in line and be patient. The wait was worth it. Cheap, and fantastic food. Windmill Restaurant is a must try when in Holland. The service was excellent, the portions were huge. The interior is small but turnover is also their forte. You will be in and out with a full belly and feeling of gratitude that you didn't get out of line to find somewhere else to go. We were visiting for the first Sunday of Tulip Time too. If you go early, you can get a parking spot on the main drag. Venture into the shops next door - they have tons of interesting things. Ask the waitress for tips or tricks before you order. They make substitutions that might be beneficial, especially if you are looking to try the cinnamon roll. The coffee was good - which is important for breakfast, right? Absolutely LOVE this restaurant. We visited Holland (from Texas) for the first time this fall, and I'm already searching realtor.com for houses! Seriously, though, it was a great (if too short) visit, and what made it extra special was breakfast at the Windmill downtown. I had the Holland omelette, and it was delicious. My wife had the hash brown omelette, but I will tell you it's probably not what you're thinking. They started with a layer of shredded house browns on the bottoms, added the egg and meat and cheese of your choice (and possibly other items, but my wife didn't want anything else), and they folded the hash brown in half! It was delicious, and quite a different take on an omelette, for sure. If you're feeling especially adventurous, try their homemade cinnamon roll. The thing was as big as a canned ham, and it was soooo soft! And they are very generous with the icing, too. And when you go, you must ask for Mel's section. If she's not available, just wait. Let others go ahead of you until Mel has a table ready. She is such a great server! Very helpful with the menu, very personable, and very attentive without being too invasive. It was the perfect balance. Knowing that we were from out of state, she offered some insight into the area, but also shared a few anecdotes about the restaurant itself. (Mel, you're a great storyteller!) When I asked if they had any fridge magnets (my souvenir of choice), she apologized that they had none. But a few minutes later she came back with something she'd found -- the last of them, in fact -- and she gave it to us as a remembrance. If you're like us, and would rather sample the local restaurants rather than the chains, make plans to go to the Windmill downtown. So we tip toed to Holland for a tulip festival. Along the way we discovered this gem from 1964! A former mayor of Holland "kicked this off". About twenty years later , Terry McMurry and his family bought the restaurant and continued the tradition of homemade comfort food. Soak your choppers into the now famous Windmill Hashbrown Omelette, which is based loosely on a casserole recipe . Terry perfected the now famous omelette and it is a must . Heck I drive 158 miles one way to try this! We tried the steak and eggs, the biscuit and gravy and I had the traditional eggs over easy, butter milk pancakes with absolutely delicious sausage patties. Service was excellent too. Great breakfast here! I stumbled on this place because I saw a line and figured the food was good. It's a simple menu, but well done. I had the 5 oz sizzler with scrambled eggs, crispy hashbrowns, white toast, and bacon. Everything was well cooked and delicious. The toast appeared to be made from homemade bread, which was nice and thick. We had the cinnamon rolls which are huge. Tried the regular and fried ones, I liked the fried the best, but I would get light icing; tasted similar to a glazed doughnut. Our server. It's a staple in Holland. Lines are usually out the door. Great for breakfast, the hash brown omelet is huge and delicious. And when I asked our darling waitress about GF options for the sides she brought out a hot cinnamon roll that was to die for! I think I was in heaven! Show up early if you're going to come for breakfast as there's a line down the street to get in. Service was great, and the portions are huge! The homemade bread was the best part of the breakfast. I ordered the hash brown omelet mini with bacon and sausage gravy on top. The sausage gravy wasn't awful but definitely not memorable. Went to windmill restaurant with my wife! Saw a line outside that was kind of long and decided to wait! So glad we did! Got seated right away since we had a small party! I got the super burger with fries! My wife got the across the street salad! And we shared the deeper fried cinnamon roll with vanilla and chocolate frosting! I would recommend only the vanilla frosting! The chocolate was a little overwhelming! Loved the Christmas decorations! Made the atmosphere so cute! read more

Not sure what all the hype is about? Other than cheap prices, I felt the breakfast was pretty bland. Even the cinnamon roll was a letdown. Everything tasted off. Nothing tasted homemade or fresh as claimed. The only things of note are the sausage links and the hash-brown omelette. Coffee & well water = terrible; bacon, pancakes, french toast just all tasted off. Not good. At all. We didn't have a wait on a Thursday morning. I don't think this place is worth the wait. I'm not sure what else needs to be said about this place. The Windmill is a must try for breakfast particularly if you are staying downtown Holland. Be aware the it is a small diner and the wait is LONG! However..it's worth the experience and food. I must rave about the deep fried cinnamon roll. We tried this with vanilla and chocolate icing. The roll is huge and tastes like an elephant ear that you would get at a county fair. It's large enough to share and a MUST try!!! Other than that...breakfast is pretty much breakfast. Cute little place for breakfast in the downtown area. I'm never disappointed when I eat here. The only downside is that it's small with limited seating which means it's busy and there can be a long wait to get a seat. But it's busy because it's also an extremely good place to eat and priced well. Today I ordered the mini hashbrown omelet with mushrooms instead of meat. A wonderful breakfast place in downtown Holland. Ambiance reminds me of an old fashioned up-north diner. Food was really good! My husband and I both had the mini hash brown omelette. The omelette was not mini at all, I can't imagine getting the larger size. My kids enjoyed their pancakes. Had I known how big the side pancakes were that came with the omelette, I would have just given those to the kiddos. Our waitress was also fantastic, I wish I knew her name. My husband forgot his phone and she came running after us outside in the middle of winter with no coat. A++ service!!! We will be back next time we are in town. read more

The windmill restaurant is an amazing and very cool breakfast place. The reason I liked the windmill restaurant so much was the friendly staff and the relaxed atmosphere. When I arrived I was greeted promptly by one of the waitresses while taking my seat. The interior of the restaurant has a very homie and relaxed atmosphere which allows any of the patients to feel like you're one of the locals. I ordered coffee and was promptly given a menu with a :-). I had been told by someone on the street to order a fried cinnamon bun which comes with either vanilla frosting or chocolate frosting and therefore I went ahead and ordered a fried cinnamon bun with vanilla frosting. I was also told to try the home fries omelette which I did and it was delicious however it was a lot of food and I actually probably could have split this with someone else. I would definitely check out the windmill restaurant for breakfast for lunch however if you decide to go there for breakfast I would suggest if you do not want to wait in a long line you get there before 8:00. I arrived at 7:15 and there was no wait and there were lots of empty tables however later on when I walked by the restaurant at 9:00 there was a line out the door and when I came back around noon they were many people waiting outside the restaurant to be seated. read more

This was a fantastic little diner in Holland, Michigan. The place was nice and clean but a little on the small side, I could see there being a wait when they get busy. Service was very good. Everyone working here was doing a great job and seemed to enjoy doing it, lots of smiles and laughter. The food was excellent. I highly recommend the Hashbrown omelette. Huge portions, enough for sharing or making two meals from. The sourdough toast was so so delicious also and even held up well with the leftovers. This place is fantastic with the perfect amount of kitschy decor! We were in town for Memorial Day weekend and must have timed it perfectly since we popped in for breakfast right after the Memorial Day parade and were seated immediately. There is nothing fancy about this place, with good reason - it's simple food, done well with phenomenal service. My husband was thrilled that they offered a variety of flavored coffee creamers (pretty sure he went through every flavor while we were there). I had an omelet (not sure where the pics went) and it was perfect. My one disappointment is that no one tipped me off about ordering the homemade toast...next time. I can't even remember what my husband ordered, but he did go for the cinnamon roll as a side. I think his jaw hit the floor when she asked if he wanted it deep fried...his response was "of course" and yours should be too. My server was good as she was pleasant, friendly and had my order in quickly. My usual-the birds best-was not the same as it had been for 20 years. This place is sooo good. We got there a little after 7am and seating was already starting to be slim. The waitresses were beyond efficient and helpful. I took the advice of previous reviews and ordered the hashbrown omelet with the homemade cinnamon roll. My husband got a regular omelet with the homemade white toast. Needless to say, he wished he'd gotten the hashbrown omelet. He ordered a side of sausage links and they were really good as well. The homemade white bread was liberally buttered the way we like. The cinnamon roll wasn't as good as Cinnabon when they first opened in the 80s; however, it was better than any other homemade cinnamon roll I've tried lately. This place is a MUST go to. Truly one of the best diner style breakfasts in West MI! There was a wait, but we made the best of it chatting with some out of towners while In line. The waitress was one of the most efficient I've seen and she was so quick to top off our water, brought our food out nice and hot, and she was so friendly. The waitress mentioned and their whole wheat toast was very popular and it did not disappoint! Thick toast with generous helping of butter...so good! We came for lunch around 1:15pm on a Sunday. There was a short wait, but you cannot put your name on a list. The Denver and Windmill omelettes were delicious. My husband opted for the cinnamon roll as his side. Our waitress offered it regular or deep fried. Ummm the deep fried version was DELICIOUS. Obviously it isn't a healthy option either way, but it was an amazing treat! (It was my birthday so why not?!) I also enjoyed the biscuits as my side. Everything was tasty, fresh, and on point for breakfast items. Lots of filling in the omelette! Our waitress was very friendly and had terrific suggestions.
