Of course this paves the way for them to give you an estimate that could be very high just to get the $159.00. Find another plumber. They don't break out costs in parts + labor which is my biggest gripe. For a simple repair that will take a short time this is not a good deal for the clients but for a bigger job like installation it may make more sense. Also they could be cheaper on the estimates which are $85 incl tax -- maybe more like $60 for up to an hour would more reasonable (in this case the estimate took 15 mins) when the national chains do it for free. I always feel good about paying a little more to support small business in my neighborhood -- we all have to make a living -- but since the pricing was not transparent I couldn't tell if I was being totally ripped off or not. They were apologetic about this but I was not comfortable to proceed. The way I see it I paid them $85 to give me the kick in the a** to do it myself! Lesson learned. read more

They took advantage of my elderly father in Nutley. Charged $316 to replace a flush valve on a toilet. This is a 15 minute job with part cost of less than $25. And the next day the toilet runs intermittently!!!!!! Never again. read more

$79 to come give you a quote. Contractors do not charge for quotes and if you believe otherwise, you are a fool and sucker for using them. It is standard practice to get 3 bids before hiring a contractor. They are basically counting on you not to do that so there are essentially targetting the uneducated/uninformed customer. Last week I was experiencing a toilet that wasn't flushing properly in my downstairs bathroom. Upon flushing, the water would fill to the brim and then drain out slowly back to normal. My husband works over an hour away and decided to contact this company as they are located in town and didn't want me to not have use of the downstairs bathroom with 2 small kids at home. The gentleman showed up, snake (I assume?) in hand and I showed him what was happening. He flushed the toilet and turned on the sink. He told me that if the toilet was clogged, that it would be overflowing with the sink on. He never once attempted to plunge or further check for a clog. He opened the back of the tank and told me that we could replace the guts of the toilet, for a few hundred dollars, but that would be a waste. He then suggested that we replace the entire toilet because, and I quote, "It's a no name brand." I called my husband on speaker so he could talk to the gentleman as well. My husband explained that it wasn't quite making sense and he asked him to check a bit further. We went downstairs and I showed him the pipes in the basement, still on speaker with my husband we were told there was no clog because he could hear water running through the pipes. My husband asked a few more questions about the possibility of just a clog and was told that the "diagnostic" he performed was how they get started. We asked for the invoice for the visit and that was it. The invoice clearly states "no clog" along with his suggested repairs. Suffice to say, my husband came home from work later that evening, gave the toilet one good plunge and voila! Water drained out normal and no issues since. I decided to call them yesterday, a week later, just to make them aware of what happened. I spoke to the owner, let him know that I did not expect a refund, and he did not dispute my claims. He did let me know that he did not want to have an unsatisfied customer, so that they would apply and $85 credit to my account to go toward future services. While I appreciate the gesture, we certainly would not consider using them again. I just wanted to share our experience. read more

Nobody likes to have to call a plumber, but when you do, you want one that treats you decently. The only reason its 4 stars and not 5, is that they have a one hour minimum and no free estimate. I can understand it, because they have to come to my house. That being said, when they get there, they do their best to get in and out in a fast time, they treat your house with respect (guy even asked me if he wanted me to take his boots off in our mudroom - this was a very nice touch). He wasnt a salesman, didn't try to push stuff on me that I didnt want, or could do without. He might have gotten an extra $50.00 off of me had he done that, but probably would have lost me as a repeat customer. Smart business. They were upfront about the cost of the hourly rate on the phone, so even though there was no onsite estimate, i knew what i was going to paying before I said yes. Recently I woke up to a leaking hot water heater and It was clear the unit needed to be replaced. I called Windheim Plumbing and spoke with Tommy who was able to quote me a price over the phone and had a guy out to my house in less than 30 minutes. Tyler, the installer, couldn't have been more helpful. He was able to drain the old unit with zero mess, which wasn't an easy task being it was 14 years old and corroded. He was more than happy to answer my questions throughout the install process and took the time to show me how to operate the new unit once it was installed. What could have been a disaster turned into a minor inconvenience and I was back with hot water before lunch. Service like this will keep me returning to Windheim for any future plumbing and heating issues. read more

Not Recommend. Spring 2018. Issue: Leaking bathtub faucet. I was told there was an 80.00 fee to show up & give an estimate and that fee will be applied to the cost of the job. The quote was $483.00 Yikes! I refused the offer of repair and did the job myself for a cost of 20.00 and 20 minuets of my time. There are times when being ripped off is more damaging then others. Charging near 100.00 bucks to be told we want to overcharge you by hundreds more is extremely unfair to the consumer. I did not have the money to throw away on a business who's MO is guilded by the opportunist mindset of Windeim's ownership. What a lousy world it would be if all business owners allowed themselves such behavior to the communities they are apart of. read more

These guys at Windheim have LITERALLY been around 100 years and i have known of them a long time as well. You can expect them to be timely, and get the work done without any questions. They have also made some reccomendations that have saved me a few bucks along the way by doing the job the right way. They are the only game in Essex/bergen County area as far as I am concerned. Here are some of the things Windheim has done for me(im sure i am forgetting some): -converted my heat system from oil to gas -Pipe Snaking -Replacing some old sink drains that were literally 60 years old and completely blocked - installation of some new water and gas lines for a new bathroom, fridge water line for ice, and also they relocated my washer/dryer to better locations as well - i even sent them to my grandmothers house when she had a heat problem Working with them will save you headaches. read more

They were very friendly on the phone and assured me that they would be able to come out to look at the shower that day. The plumbers (Marco and Phil) arrived at the time that I was given, and were very friendly and courteous. They took obvious care and there was clear pride in their work. Don't ever use them. Supposed to be here for a main drain at 4:00 PM on Friday and did not show up until 7:45. Told me at 8:15 PM that he needed a special snake and would be back on Saturday around 12:00 PM. At 1:30 I still hadn't even gotten a phone call, at 4:05 PM they told me they could not come, only after I called them. They said I was the first appointment on Sunday between 10, and 11. After two calls, at 1:45 I still have no response. Mind You, this was to fix a drain that wasn't fixed correctly three weeks prior. So unless your looking for the worst service possible. Call my grandmother, she can do it faster. read more

It was very bad customer service. I called them in early morning for the problem of the heater. Our garage door was opened. Workers of the company without anyone's permission started investigating the heater. My wife came downstairs due to the noise in the garage. The asking price was 25% more estimated. My wife asked them to call me to discuss the technical problems as well as the price. The owner stated that he called, but he never did. I called them immediately after they left without any notification. The owner told that he can provide service the following day. Please stay away from this company, very rude and unprofessional. read more

Avoid this plumbing company !! They totally rip you off!! They have a new system whereby there is a flat fee for services. I had a leaky toilet and it cost $293 for the repair. The plumber took about five or 10 minutes to fix and replace two minor plastic parts. When I asked why the repair was so costly, I was told that is the price according to the "book". I have used Windheim in the past and they were quite reasonable and fair. I will never use them again and neither should you unless you ask what the "book " fee is before you schedule an appointment. read more

Have used this plumber for a long time, over 20 years! Service used to be professional and reasonable. For a long time have felt that some of the costs seemed to be a bit high. The last time we called them I found the cost extremely high. They quoted my husband over $500 (with a 10% discount) to replace a broken water pipe less than 1 1/2 ft in length. It required capping the pipe (temporarily) where it broke, and then adding the new pipe with valve. It was a straight line from the basement through the same hole and to the deck. I called the office to question the charge and was told they charge by the job, and the plumber would call me back. No one called. The next day the plumber called to return to make the repair and I expressed my disappointment. He volunteered that they charge $225/hour! He had collected $208 from us the day before for coming out and capping the pipe. I told them we were done and that they would never step foot in my house again. I am not a plumber but knew that this was entirely too much to pay for this service. I called a new plumber who made the repair for $160! I asked how much it would have been if he capped the pipe first and he said the whole job would have been $160! read more
