I'm a child of the 80s, so I had to stop in to the mysteriously still surviving Wimpy in Watney Market. I asked for the fish burger, advertised front and centre, and got fish fingers in a bun, although, admittedly, in Wimpy original packaging. The whole place is like this, coming across as deeply confused. The customers are about what I'd expect. The trappings, specials, and furnishings all seem right. But the core of the place is off, somehow. The staff seem dazed: As if they're carrying out the last wishes of a dying creature, lost in time.
Of course, this is East London, home of jellied eels and hipsters, so I can't tell if the whole ting is innocent temporal slippage, or a joke, too wide and nebulous to properly grasp.
Either way, the fish burger is surprisingly good. read more
