Okay, this is probably the station you get off at to get to centre-court because, well, it is a major interchange station, and there does seem to be a major shopping precinct here as well. Even a few pubs, but then again there are lots of pubs in England. Oh, you can like catch the tram here as well, which I think is also pretty good. Wimbledon station is one of the busiest stations on the South West Trains network, on the main line from Waterloo to Southampton. It is also the terminus of the Wimbledon branch of the District Line of TfL, and of the Tramlink to Croydon, and provides an interchange with the Sutton loop of the Thameslink service via Blackfriars. It is used by 19 million passengers a year on the main line, a similar number on the District Line, and over 2 million on Tramlink. The station opened on the Waterloo to Woking Line in 1838, with the other branches owning over the subsequent 40 years, although the line towards Sutton opened as late as 1929. In 1997 the line to West Croydon was closed for conversion into the Tramlink, reopening in 2000. In 1881 the station was relocated from its original site on the opposite side of the bridge. The station was rebuilt in the Art Deco style in the 1920s. The station has 11 platforms: 1-4 for the District Line terminus, which has its own concourse on the north side of the station (where the toilets are located); 5-8 on the South West main line; 9 for Thameslink services and 10a and 10b for Tramlink. Platforms 6 and 7 are on the fast lines and only used occasionally. All stopping suburban services from Waterloo stop here. Lifts provide step free access to all platforms. The ticket office and concourse are located on the north side of the station adjacent to the staircase to the District Line. There are shop units along the bridge above the platforms selling food, and future shop units on the District Line concourse. Wimbledon, the most famous tennis court in the world, has a Tube station at one end of the District Line (note that the next-to-last station is Wimbledon Park). It is also served by South West Trains and Capital Connect with National Rail services and Route 3 of the Tramlink. The first station here was opened in 1838 and the basic design hasn't changed much since then, other than the addition of a whole bunch more platforms. The station is step-free, but the lifts are well back from the platforms and require extra navigation. It is in Travelcard Zone 3 and there are Oyster readers and ticket barricades. You can switch from the National Rail platforms to the District without touching in. There are special readers and processes for those who are riding the Tramlink, which actually confuse me. Until this trip through Wimbledon station, I didn't even know there was a Tram line in London! On the overpass that takes you from platform to platform are a number of vendors including an AMT Coffee (try the Palomino), a West Cornwall Pasty and others. This ten platform station is unique in London. It is the only station to house tube, train and tram. Platforms 1-4 are for the termius of the district line, platform 5 and 6 are for rail services towards Clapham Junction and London Waterloo, whilst 7 and 8 are for southbound South West train rail services to Epsom, Woking, Guildford, Surbition, Kingston and more. Platform nine is home to the Thameslink service in both directions to Luton, central London and Sutton whilst platform 10 houses the terminus to the Croydon Tramlink to Beckenham, Croydon and Mitcham. There are two entraces, the main one has a large taxi rank, small amount of drop off parking and shops abound everywhere inside and outside the entraces ad the secound entrance brings you out at the wonderful Centre Court Shopping Centre. Enjoy, but be warned at rush hour (actually most hours on any day) this is a very busy station and getting a ticket takes time. As doesw moving around this excellent interchange! read more

Haha I won't be able to beat Katie B's Wombles of Wimbledon Station ditty in her review of this station. So, I'llgo the serious route instead. It's a little confusing for passengers in that it's both an Underground and Tramlink station as well as a regular overground train station served by Southwest Trains. The main confusion arises because the platforms serving all these 3 services aren't separated but you can walk freely between the 3. The fly in the ointment comes in remembering to touch in and out if you're using an Oyster card for travel and going between the 3 different services without leaving the station. You do that on the little terminals on the platforms - if you forget, you'll get charged the full maximum fare. Ouch! It is convenient however to have all 3 services though this branch of the District line is not the best served - the trains seem to arrive together with long gaps in between. There also seems to be a paucity of Underground ticket machines at the station. I've helped quite a few poor tourists who have been bamboozled by the 3 machines serving the 3 different services. There's also a large taxi rank outside the station - so large in fact that it has its own Yelp listing! One little tip is that there's a great shop inside the barriers selling South African food like biltong. read more

"Underground, overground, Wombling free, the Wombles of Wimbledon Station are we!" Not quite the lyrics but it works as the station has an overground and an underground! I used to use this station all the time when I lived south of the river. I used to pass through it every day for work and it was a handy stop-off for post-work shopping as it's attached to Centre Court Shopping Centre. It also has the added bonus of having both a taxi rank and numerous bus stops (one of which has a bus that used to take me directly home) so if trains were cancelled, delayed or you miss the last one of the evening, you're never left without an option. Always busy but never over-crowded, I had and still have a soft spot for Wimbledon Station. "Remember you're a Womble" - I certainly do!! read more

It's not so much a tube station as 4 platforms allowing access to the tube. The 'next tube to leave' display board is most unreliable and often shows the tube after next and only the occasional driver is kind enough to tell you if another tube is leaving first. Some days the board says 'Sorry there is no information available' and the staff make no helpful announcements over the tannoy. Also, you are not aware of any serious delays until you have passed through the barriers and arrived at platform level. There are no dedicated TFL machines at the station and South West Trains have signal priority. Very much the poor relation at this station. read more

Took this station to attend Wimbledon; it's the closest one to the actual grounds and an easy walk ( probably about 4blocks). This station felt pretty old and small, but everything seemed to be in working order. I literally arrived there at 6:30am with a huge Wimbledon crowd, but I was able to make it out of the station and on my way to the Tennis grounds easily. read more

Clean, modern and non-confusing train station -- I had no problems finding where I was going from this station. It was totally decorated for the tennis competition -- so had to weave around big signs and such but otherwise, pretty clean and easy to navigate. read more

Upon my first arrival in London the 'joy' of a tube journey made me turn up my nose at the Overground train options around but now I have come to appreciate them! Wimbledon station is located on Wimbledon High Street. It caters for Southwest trains to greater London areas and to Waterloo. It also has a District line to Earls court. Right next to the station is the Wimbledon mall with every store you may need on your way home or for sundry shopping. The station gives direct access to Wimbledon High Street and the road up to Wimbledon Common and Village. The convenience of a train, with more space and fewer stops, over a crowded, dark tube is heavily underrated. This station very comfortably caters for the Wimbledon area, getting one into town and around the southwest area of greater London with the minimum fuss and discomfort read more

A wonderful station where people transition and continue their journey on foot bus team train or tube. A lovely atmosphere with a vibrant energy. There are numerous places to eat in the satation itself, i like the cornish pasty outlets and the Japanese take away on the outside of the station. I used to live in Wimbledon and used the station daily. AS mentioned by another reviewer there is the tube, train and tram here. There is also a taxi rank outside which is very efficient. Inside the station there are your usual shops, food, shoe repair, newsagent. The only criticism would be the queues for tickets. They have put in a number of ticket machines but on a work morning it can be painful. Because the tube starts at Wimbledon you usually can get a seat. The trains run through to Waterloo in London via Clapham Junction. Being from South Africa there is now a South African food shop in the station by the tube platforms, selling all the usual foods. Very handy on the way home. read more

One of the more aggravating and frustrating stations. You cannot top up your oyster card at one of the machines so have to queue up in the long line until you get to a booth where you can't hear what the staff are saying and lets face it, you dont really want to talk to them either. If you dont want to queue up for ages you can visit the local WHsmith corner shop thingy by the station where you can wait in a shorter line of no more than 4 people and then be barked out by the shop keepers who are bored with life and tfl commuters. The main problem with this station is that you can't top up Oyster cards on the machines; you have to queue up and the queues can sometimes take ages! The best thing to do is top them up at the news agents just by the main entrance to the station. The bicycle storage facilities here are really good; I'm not sure how safe they are but they feel safe because they have CCTV and you must have a ticket to access them. read more

Almost as busy as clapham. The tram from the croydon badlands comes in here. It's an absolute dump. Don't even think about wanting the toilet, or a ticket , if you are in a hurry. Best thing about this station is that it has 2, yes 2, West Cornish Pasty kiosks. Avoid early mornings and 4pm when the catholic skoolies kick merry hell out of each other. Nice gang and drug presence at the Centre Court exit that neither the station, the shopping centre or the police station 100 feet away can do anything about. read more
