Back when I lived in Hampstead, this was my local station. The staff, I must say, are the most unpleasant tube staff I have ever met but the station itselfhas a wonderful atmosphere. I honestly believe it may be haunted. I know it was used during WW2 as a shelter, and it's very old, as well as being the deepest underground station in London, but I do get some strange feelings being there.
Especially that wierd jolt the lift does on its way up where it makes you want to hurl but it feels like a welcome home hug at the same time. Only try walking up the stairs if you're insane/super fit, as they are narrow, spooky and numerous!!
In all the years I knew the station (1985-2008) it never changed other than the new Oyster card readers and changing of kiosk owners, and it's lovely to come back to every now and again. read more
