Ribs, fried chicken, and chopped pork. Dinner also included two sides - I had okra and cabbage - and sweet tea.

Arrived on a Saturday night with a large hungry party after a camping trip. One of the specials was a sampler which included fried chicken, chopped barbecue pork, and ribs with two sides. The chopped pork was great. South HIll is very close to NC so I'd put it in the NC style rather than the tidewater/Richmond Virginia style. The house sauce was mustard based which was a nice surprise. If I were to describe it, I'd say it's a western NC style with mustard. Very different from the SC style mustard-based sauce. I liked it so much I purchased a bottle on my way out. Fried chicken was served hot, fresh, and was delicious. The ribs were pretty good as well but, to be honest, by the time I got to them, I was stuffed. Our waitress was great. Super nice and very patient with our large party. She handled all the challenges with a small and classic hospitality. I really liked this place and will definitely go back.

This place is pretty large and you can dine in or take food to go. Pies and pie slices are available to take home. The menu is a typical meat and two sides with Southern food and changes each day. There are both tables and booths. I had orange chicken stir fry and a rather large salad.

My group decided to start with appetizers and we got a lot. The seafood tower which consisted of an assortment of baked oysters, shrimp cocktail, shrimp ceviche, sliced seared tuna and smoked fish dip were all excellent. We were all a little skeptical of the smoked fish dip but we all loved it! We got an extra order of baked oysters and the coastal hush puppies which were also excellent. We had so many appetizers that only two of us got entrees. The tuna steak and blackened redfish were top notch and nothing went home! As we had a birthday in the group they gave him a free tres leches cake slice that we shared. It was moist and delicious. They have a great bartender and two people got prickly pear margaritas while the rest of us got martinis. They were all perfect! Bottom line here, I'm probably shooting myself in the foot but this restaurant can match anything downtown Raleigh has to offer. This place should be packed! We can't wait to go back!

The restaurant was not busy at all and nothing we ordered should take more than 10 minutes to cook. Our waitress was nice and gave good recommendations. It was obvious she was happy working there. The bill was well over $300 for 5 people. I order of hushpuppies, 2 drinks, 1 prosecco, 5 mains and no desserts. Waited at least an hour for our food.

We ordered two meals - a pulled pork plate with hush puppies, onion rings, and okra, as well as a pulled chicken sandwich with a side of fries. Overall the food was very good, not as much of a smoke ring on the meat as you might see at many BBQ places, but still flavorful. The chicken was a bit dry, but fortunately there's plenty of BBQ sauce on the table. Overall it's a really nice place with solid food and quick service. Clearly this place is popular with the locals. The inside was nice and clean. I would certainly consider stopping here again when I'm in the area.

It's basically a mid-way point between Durham and Richmond or Virginia Beach, and is right up near the state line, so it kind of makes a natural stopping point. You also know that the options for actually stopping and eating there, are pretty limited outside of fast food. So I was encouraged to find a roadside BBQ shack with more than 4 stars on Yelp about 5 miles off the highway. The place looks the part, an old gas station converted into a BBQ hideaway. Upon pulling in and parking, my hopes were high. Unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. The service at the counter was friendly and helpful, definitely a high point. I ordered a brisket sandwich combo, for which I chose collard greens as the side (on recommendation), and a tea. It also came with a condiment cup of coleslaw for the sandwich, on request. All told, about 15 bucks. A few minutes later my order was up, and I had a seat on one of the counter stools. Unwrapping the sandwich, I was already a bit unenthused. Standard economy hamburger bun, bit of meat poking out one side. Removing the top bun revealed one solitary slice of brisket about a half inch thick, cut in half, a small portion based on all my life BBQ experiences. Pulling off a piece, the meat had a very pot-roast like texture, not characteristic of recently smoked brisket. In all fairness, unless you are rapidly selling brisket, it is a difficult meat to maintain quality on. I dumped my coleslaw ontop and sauced it up, which helped, I liked the sauce... but the sandwich was a definite disappointment. The collard greens, though cooked properly, were very salty. I was hoping for a little bit of sweetness or vinegar, but just salt. I added some of their vinegar style sauce hoping to help it, but just didn't make much dent. Maybe ordering brisket was the wrong thing to do and pork is more their speed, or a plate is the better route, with a different side for sure... but I don't see myself trying again. The search for decent stop-over food continues.
