You can pick up a list of trails and rough map at the entrance. We meandered creekside, and looped Hillside Trail to meadow trail, all with amazing scenery. We are getting into camping this year and this was our trial run with all the new gears we bought. We rented camper site #1 which is labeled as "premium". Maybe it was a bit bigger than the regular sites but other than that it didn't feel particularly premium. Since #1 and 48 are the first and last sites in the campground loop and closest to the visitor center, they had the best WiFi reception. The downside is we were the farthest to the bathrooms and showers which were located on the opposite site of the loop. This made trekking over at night a bit inconvenient. The bathrooms were somewhat clean and the showers are coin-operated at the cost of 25c per minute. Shampoo and body wash were provided which is nice. All in all this was a nice introductory experience for us. If we were to come back to camp at this park we will opt for site #3 which is nicely tucked into the shaded corner and is fairly close to the bathrooms.

The circumference of the lake is about a 2 mile flat loop. Upon entering the park felt very bizarre. You leave a nice neighborhood with nice homes then in a blink of an eye, you are surrounded by bare trees covered in moss surrounded by tons of small flat boulders. It was so bare and quiet that it felt like this portion of the earth had died. Very bizarre. You'll eventually find the parking lots which all connect together in some form. There's an $8 fee here. You can't see the lake from much of the parking lot, maybe in a few spots like where a boat ramp might be. I had to use a map in my hiking app to find which direction the lake was at. Once at the lake there are pretty much 2 trails that go around the same lake. 1 is at lake level and is a dirt trail. So it has a more hiking feel as the trail is rough with lots of heavy brush on the sides. Even tho lake level you'll only get a glimpse of the lake in only a few spots. That's because the brush is so thick and over grown that it'll block views to the water since you are at lake level. The second trail is a paved trail that is above lake level, so from most spots you are looking down on the lake. This is the trail to take if you want to take pics or just admire the water views. Also the trail to take if you want to bike or jog as it is a wider and smoother trail than the dirt one at lake level. I saw a separate swimming lagoon on one of the corners. It wasn't in operation in October when I went but looks like it could be a popular spot during the warm summer Santa Rosa months. This area of the lake is also the most landscaped as I saw lawn areas with picnic benches and nicer trees alongside the lake, even some very pretty small redwoods. I enjoyed my views most on this side of the lake. You can also add length to your route by connecting this loop with other trails. There's even a loop that connects this loop that goes to another smaller lake, which would make your route now closer to 4 miles. Nice spot may even have to bring a group here someday for a picnic day if ever back in the area.

The sad thing is it burned down right before completion so they never got to live in the house. The use of stones and rock kept a lot of the walls despite the fire and it reminds me of of an oversized version of a Greene and Greene style Craftsman Bungalow I saw in Pasadena, CA. If you are a fan of abandoned places you will like coming here. It's fenced off for safety so you can't go running around the structures but you can do a full 360 walk around and there is a platform you can walk on that's about in the middle of the house and you get a good view of the pool and different floors from here. The hike from the parking lot to the museum and to the grave sites and house are easy, my senior parents and young kids were able to do it easily. I would stop by the museum on the way back, there are some nice artifacts from Jack London as well as a scale model of what the hosue was supposed to look like.

The parking lot is spacious, and is a short walk past cacti to the entrance. This site was the Mexican governor of the area's residence. On entry, there's a gift shop with souvenirs and reading material, plus some exhibits. There's a ticket booth too, which was reasonable (they also take cards). The ticket gets you into other sites in the area on the same day as purchase. The attendant was very friendly and gave me a laminated info sheet about the building. There was also a volunteer docent to lead you through the history of the building and people that lived here. I opted to explore both levels on my own, which had information signs and period furniture throughout. If you're a history fan with an hour to spare, it's worth a visit.

So sad to see this park go downhill so quickly under new management. Note to self the new camp…read morehost, who is on site every day, has a pit bull. Which she brings into the office everyday. Most parks strictly Prohibit you from bringing in such an aggressive breed this park does not. Pro's The location is still the best thing this park has going for it. Period. And don't forget this location is the old 4 H agricultural site so your literally parked next to a barn full of flies! CON's There is NO WIFI or any kind of cable services available or provided. The Feral/stray cats rule the roost. You can find them digging in the trash (which is rarely collected) and pulling the garbage from bags onto the street. Which is left in the street until the trash is collected which usually happens once a week. The cats fight under your rigs often at 3 am and go on for hours. Or they poop on your lawn for you to find when you go to the trash the following morning. Which is also left unattended to unless you clean it up. At one point we counted an excess of 16 cats. The park is falling apart and the landscaping is a joke. But hey if you pay the new Camp host, Emma, $20 she will mow your lawn for you! We saw two people do just that after the grass and weeds grew a foot high and they repeatedly asked to get their grass cut. The park has a serious ant and fly problem. Their idea of pest control is the hanging fly bags like you would see in a barn which reek! So lucky you if they are hanging next to your "premier or luxury site" the bags have a foul stench just a few feet from your windows. When the ants converge on your camper they will fill the cabin as well as your counter tops, cabinets and floors. And may happen more than once in a visit if you stay more than a day or so. The park reeks of urine and raw sewage. Note to self if you see a tall red pipe in the pictures that is a sewage exhaust pole so you will smell the raw sewage usually around 11 when people dump their tanks. The power is still unreliable so leaving your pets at home on a hot day without a backup generator is a bad plan. You may see power spikes and or the breakers will blow on hot days. The homeless stay on property during the winter months so lock up your bikes and personal items. We saw one night the homeless stole 3 bikes off property. Two were actually locked to the back of a Motorhome and they cut the locks and stole the bikes. But don't worry the park does not care and the city will send a social worker to take notes of your loss. Also in the middle of the night you might be awoke by the homeless rooting around in the recycle bins for discarded bottles or cans. That always made us feel so safe! Restrooms are filthy! And their laundry room consists of two of each machine. So hopefully you will not need either facility and if you do I would wear shoes into the shower for sure! No pool or on site amenities at all. If you spill your black or grey tanks no need to report it, they do nothing about it. There is ZERO clean up after a guest departs. Even though the camp host will feign interest and tell you she will get right on the clean up. So be aware when your pets are walking around eating grass.... Oh and in some cases their prices have gone up about $30 a site. The new management has decided they price the sites now based on noise levels. Which is a joke because the PG and E trucks use the entrance road all day and night. The place is noisy and filthy! Oh and bingo comes and goes I think 4 nights a week so that let's out around 10 pm with a stream of cars and noise as well. The park now allows all ages of equipment in all sorts of conditions. Pay no attention to their own printed materials and rules. The Camp host herself has a rig that is so old and rundown her equipment would not be allowed in most parks. Or any class A park for sure (See photo) This park is no longer supported or affiliated to Good Sam probably for the reasons all mentioned above, but that is a guess. So don't go looking for a Good Sam discount. People sleeping in their exterior bays were not discouraged by Management on our last visit. Nor was the hanging of laundry asked to be removed from outside clothes lines on several units. In summation, steer clear of this park!

The park is easy to find using the address included in your reservation email. With a discount…read morewe're paying $80 a night for a "premium" pull through. All sites have the same full hookups, concrete pad and picnic table so what's premium? It's almost level so the auto leveler finished quickly. The bathrooms are decent though cleaned about every three days. The trash and recycling are clearly identified and picked up daily. They have a laundry with 2 washers and two dryers for a reasonable cost. The staff is helpful and over loaded with tasks. There's no WiFi though you can receive deliveries here. At $65 a night I'd rate it higher.
