I've reviewed the New Haven Willoughby's and everything I said there would apply here. Willoughby's is both a roaster and a coffee shop. I brew at home so the wide variety of roasted beans offered and the ability to order .25 pounds of beans for sampling is ideal for me. I like that they often offer a couple of different bean options for my black iced coffee. Service was friendly. There was seating and food, but I just got iced coffee and beans to go. My iced coffee was good. The coffee I made at home with the Kenyan AA beans was also good. As the cup suggests, Willoughby's is for serious coffee people. Had a lovely time visiting Willoughby's Coffee & Tea in Madison. Just a few shops down from RJ Julia book store, pick up some pastries, tea, coffee and coffee beans! We were lucky and got a parking spot right in front of the shop, but there is additional parking in the back by Stop & Shop. When you walk into Willoughby's you are greeted with the large wall of coffee beans. It was a little overwhelming with the amount of different coffee they carry, but the coffee aroma made the shop smell delicious. I love that in addition to their coffee that they had a variety of teas too. I'm a tea connoisseur so I had to try their Iced London Fog Latte. It was delicious, creamy, and refreshing with hints of vanilla and lavender. My mother got an Iced Hazelnut Mocha Latte that she enjoyed. She likes her coffee drinks very sweet and with strong flavor. The mocha and hazelnut came through. They had a selection of cookies, pastries, donuts, and muffins too. The staff was very friendly and patient with us since it was our first time there. I was surprised how large the shop was inside. It was clean and very inviting. They had shelves with branded merchandise, coffee gadgets and a few useful things to help you create drinks at home. They had a booth the length of the wall with a couple of tables and chairs. They even had those fun, wooden tic-tac-toe boards. There are a few tables and chairs set up outside as well. When you come to Willoughby's they want you to slow down, sit a while, and enjoy your cup of coffee or tea. read more

Atmosphere is fine. The pricing is normal however it was very disappointed as the drip coffee was very bitter. Spending four dollars for a pure bitterness doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. Even less so as they're supposedly roasters. read more

Since I'll be starting a new gig in a few weeks, I wanted to try out the local coffee establishments in the area. This was our 2nd stop. Cute little place. As you walk in, there's a wall of a variety of coffee beans you can order and grind by the pound. They have swag near where you would place your order. Can't really comment on the employees, only for the fact that they didn't look like they wanted to be here, and it was only around 11am! Ordered a mocha that was alright. I also got the crumb cake, and man! That made my day! Super moist and the crumb was just as high as the cake portion! Definitely go there for the crumb cake. It's a very cute coffee house located in the heart of downtown Madison. The place is quaint and adorable inside. I can't really speak too much about the food and drink because all I had was a cup of coffee! What I can say is on a warm day you can sip your coffee outside the coffee House and just watch the world go by. Downtown Madison is charming and has a very New Englandy feel that I think most people would enjoy. It's sort of the quintessential New England coffee house. Staff was very friendly and when I wasn't feeling well and politely asked if they could bring the coffee out to me they did! So great coffee and a great environment in a beautiful little downtown area of a gorgeous community with warm and friendly staff. I would highly recommend people try this place. read more

Not much seating - maybe room for a dozen people at small bistro tables. Despite there only being a few other customers, it was very noisy and difficult to have a conversation. DO NOT GO, NOT FOOD ALLERGY SAFE- I have been getting coffee here regularly for the past year and love it. But due to the negligence of safety demonstrated by the manager, I will no longer be returning. I came in two weeks ago to get some donut and pastries for my boyfriend and his friends. I asked if the donut holes were filled with chocolate hazelnut because my boyfriend has a nut allergy so I do NOT want those. Any whom, the barista said yes but there are also jelly. So I asked for 3 jelly since I can't have nuts. She clarified with someone that the ones in the front were "jelly" then I paid and was on my way. My boyfriend bites eats the donut, and it is chocolate hazelnut. Long story short, he gets sick and the whole reaction happens. I called back to tell them they gave me the wrong ones and what happened. Whoever answered the phone was very apologetic and felt terrible. She told me the manager will be calling me ASAP. It took over a week for me to hear from the manager and once I did I wish I hadn't. I had to call back and remind the employees that I was expecting a call from the manager due to the situation. The manager then called me back and was SO rude and said "So why would you get donuts that were near the ones he couldn't eat?" And I said "He can't consume nuts but can touch them, it is not that severe. I assumed the donuts were labeled and the employees would be able to dictate which donuts were which". Then she says "well what are you expecting to get out of this call?" And I said "perhaps a refund for the 3 donuts I bought that I then threw away because my boyfriend had an allergic reaction to one?" And she said she would try to look for the transaction and would let me know if she found it then refund me for the 3 donuts on the order. I wouldn't consider her doing the bare minimum. The friend that was in my car when I took the call was appalled by her attitude, tone, and lack of compassion. read more

If a zero were possible I would surely leave one. This is the first negative review I have ever left. I went in to purchase 2 chai lattes ($10). The girl who was incredibly sloppy looking and outwardly rude to every customer (appeared to be a manager) coughed all over her hand, picked up my cup with the same hand she just rubbed her nose and mouth with and made the lattes. She handed me two steaming lattes I said thank and she did not reply. I got to my car, I put the lattes into the cup holders, picked up one and the lid was not on. The hot latte spilled all over me and my car! I walked back in to get a new lid and let her know the lid wasn't on... she replied, oh no it's not the lid just probably the cup, you need a new cup. She put everything in a new cup and the lid fit perfectly. Meaning she served the faulty cup knowing full well it could and would spill all over said customer. Not only was this an incredibly terrible customer service experience, it was dangerous. As a local, this truly stinks because it is one of the few local coffee shops around. New staff recommended!!!! Also those $10 lattes she made were way too sweet and I threw mine out. Buyer beware! read more

My wife and I stopped in for a jolt of caffeine before we headed back to NJ. We love the mom & pop coffee shops. If we lived closer, this would be in the rotation. I had a large iced French roast coffee and the boss had a hot French roast coffee. As coffee snobs, we would say this coffee was excellent. Service was good and friendly and the prices were not an issue. They even sell coffee beans by the pound as evident by the display. They even had about 4 different types of milk for your coffee. Nice pastry selection too. Staff was friendly. I used to stop at the guilford store almost daily for 3 years. Always got an iced americano, always between $2-3. Apparently this same drink in guilford is $4. FOUR DOLLARS and two cents exactly, for several shots of espresso and some water. I politely questioned the staff about the cost- which I knew would be a mistake- I didn't really get an answer, just defensiveness and a little anger. No need to get defensive sweetness , I'm not daddy and I'm not that bar of soap you've been avoiding I've now officially had the most expensive iced americano ever. I love this place because its one of the few oases in our town where the hippies like me can gather, chat and sip tasty local coffee. Every time I return to Madison to visit the parents, this is my third stop after my parents' home and the local pub;) I usually take a book or my netbook to one of the tables near the window order an Ariana Kono coffee and pumpkin scone (those might be seasonal) and read or write. What's nice about this place is its central location in Madison, the people watching and you can look out across the street to see what's playing at the local movie theater to help you and your friends decide if you will go bowling in the evening instead of watch the newest artsy movie. This is crucial as there are only five things to do at night in/around Madison - bowling, drinking, movie watching, more drinking and skinny dipping. read more

Sidewalk seating during summer months is my favorite. Especially early mornings when the business district is quiet. We needed gas for the car on our road trip south from Boston to DC, so I turned off the highway and stopped by Madison to fuel up the car and ourselves. I was pleasantly surprised by Willoughby's. Even though the interior was nothing exciting, the people working behind the counter were very sweet, patiently waiting for me to pick out the exact italian cookie I wanted to go with my latte. The coffee itself was fairly good, a dark roast where you could taste the coffee even when it was drowned in milk. The other customers of Willoughby's were also very kind and went out of their way to move chairs around so we could all sit by the window. read more

Let me start off by saying that I have complete respect for local coffee shops because they provide an alternative to Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. Willoughbys is one of the best local coffee shops in CT and I enjoy their drinks and their freshly roasted coffee that you can buy by the pound. My only gripe, which is why I don't give it five stars, is that the coffee they use for the drinks they serve in the store is way too dark. It's difficult to enjoy an espresso or macchiato because of this. I would LOVE to be able to have an espresso made with some of the lighter beans that are sold by the pound. My tip to the owner/manager: have a small separate grinder and allow people to have a drink made from the freshly roasted beans. I would gladly pay and extra $0.50 to $1 for an espresso made with those lighter beans. Keep up the good work! read more
