There are numerous programs for stroke survivors, from speech therapy to computer classes. There is also a fitness and rehabilitation center run by a well-educated, knowledgeable and friendly staff. Everyone there seems so happy and friendly from staff to survivors, and many times you can't tell them apart at all- the American Stroke Foundation is like one big family. I highly recommend it to stroke survivors, or anyone looking to volunteer for a worthwhile cause.

I joined a bunch of chambers when I first started my business, not just to meet and network with…read morenew friends, but in the hopes that the chamber would help me grow my business. The Chamber helped me meet some of my nearest and dearest friends, who I got to know first at networking events, and then developed great friendships. But, if you think the Chamber is going to step in and help you grow your business, even if you serve on the Diplomats or on committees, it won't happen. The Chamber's purpose is to propose for and fight for legislation, and to be a forum for networking. Don't come here expecting anything else and you'll be fine. The OP Chamber is one of the best in KC. A great program that a friend of mine went through was "Leadership Overland Park" - an 8-week course that introduces participants to a panoramic view of living, working, and governing in our fair city.

The Douglas County Courthouse in Lawrence is a 1903 Richardsonian Romanesque landmark designed by…read moreJohn G. Haskell and Frederick C. Gunn, a pair of architects that the county commissioners asked to collaborate after a design competition left them unable to choose just one. The rough-faced limestone, the arched entries, and the tall square clock tower give the building a heavy, almost fortress-like presence on Massachusetts Street, and it still feels like the kind of place where county business has real weight. Douglas County was founded in 1855 and named for Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois, the same figure tied to the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the popular sovereignty debates that shaped early Kansas politics. Lawrence has always been the county seat, and the city was named for Amos A. Lawrence, the Massachusetts abolitionist who helped fund the New England Emigrant Aid Company's settlement efforts. Stepping inside, you can feel the weight of history here. It's a handsome building, solidly built and worth a stop if you're already wandering downtown Lawrence. The bronze shows a small, simplified child wrapped in a sweeping cloak, the kind of abstract shape that reads more like a symbol than a portrait. Once you see it, the theme clicks. It's "leadership" as protection, guidance, and responsibility rather than authority for its own sake. It's been here since 1987, case in bronze and set on a simple concrete base, and it fits the courthouse grounds well. It's not a loud sculpture or one that demands attention, but it's thoughtful, well-made and worth pausing for if you're already exploring downtown Lawrence.
