No, really, you're here searching for a review of this place? Are you out of your mind? Nothing else to do? First off, if you're here, it's because you have no choice. Get past it. Expect to be greeted by a bored, aging security guard asking if you have weapons on you. Barney Fife is armed, so be on your best behavior. The looks on the faces of the old geezers (some may say like me) coming in the door being asked: priceless. Lots of people in the waiting area? You'll be here awhile. Things move slow to my eye and that mostly seems related to there are at least 6 windows but only two people manning (or womaning in this case) them. My clerk was hands down pleasant, easy to work with and competent plus. 5 stars for her. Solved my question in less than a minute and I was on my way. Job well done. Whatever she's paid it's likely not enough. Look, as a rule I don't get online to bitch about places like driver's license bureau, court houses, etc. Places managed by the government where you enter with expectations hovering near zero. The issue here, and I confirmed this online at some other reviewing services, is the wait. There were 6 people ahead of me when I entered, took 45 minutes to clear that out so my one minute issue could be resolved. Oh, and only open 3 hours on Wednesdays, 9-12, and closed Saturdays and Sundays, you know, those times people working actually have off. I suppose it would be too much to expect they'd be properly staffed. If you come: near the corner of 15th and Kasold in an office park. Free parking. There's a bar a block away after you finish just in case you feel the need after the wait.

I have lived many places in the USA (7 states & 18 cities) but I have NEVER, I mean EVER felt so…read moremuch disrespect & disgust with this group of law enforcement personnel. 1. They drive the nicest cars of any police force I have witnessed. 2. They ARE way OVERSTAFFED. I typically see at least 1 police car for every 10-15 drivers. It reminds me of my time living in the occupied territories of Palestine; where Israeli police literally beat, arrested & persecuted anyone who appeared 'suspicious'. 3. They have forgotten the mission to 'Protect & Serve'; replacing their mission with 'Rob & Search Out Money' at all costs. 4. The times that I have needed assistance or asked for help, they have been abrupt, rude, disrespectful & dismissive. However, when there is an accident or the opportunity to drive fast, play their big loud sirens, they will knock pedestrians off the sidewalk, endanger citizen's lives & waste hours doing nothing. Every accident that I have witnessed or driven by, there have been no less than 7 police cars. Really? Not a great use of hard earned taxpayer dollars. 5. Every officer that I have encountered is overweight, out of shape, arrogant, rude, disrespectful, pompous & uncommunicative. They have all been ignorant of laws (including citizen's civil rights, due process, Miranda rights, procedural guidelines, etc.) 6. The few times I have dealt with these so-called 'Selfless Public Servants', it has evoked fears of a growing police state. What a tragedy! I suppose they have either beaten their citizens into submission, surgically extracted their brains (and capacity to think) or run every thinking person out of town. Not a great long term strategy for success guys.

Perhaps a minor suggestion is the addition of signage that indicates where to start if one wants to explore and learn in chronological order, but I did figure it out and had a really nice time.

The Watkins Museum is housed in the beautifully restored Watkins bank and mortgage building, itself an important part of Lawrence history. They have some wonderful exhibits about the history of the city and I found the one about Quantrill's raid to be particularly interesting. Lots of fun artifacts and some interactive displays to entice children to take an interest in history too. The price is right--it's free but I would encourage visitors to leave a nice donation.

I rarely leave reviews, but reading negative ones I really felt some were unfair. A month ago I realized my license had expired. I dreaded going to the drivers license office…read morebecause of the hassle. Long lines. Waiting. Waiting. I didn't find any of that on my trip. They have redone the building since Covid and it's brighter, more user friendly and less waiting! There is a front desk and a person directs you to where you need to go. They have big monitors so you can see your number and wait time on the screen. Very fancy! The examiner was very nice and cordial. It was a quick, easy process and even enjoyable. Next time I won't be so reluctant to get my license renewed. There is plenty of parking and the building is easily accessible. There was also plenty of seating in the waiting area.
