The systems in place are difficult right now but I can honestly say that the people in the offices have not lost their will to help others in need.

Focusing on the Overland Park Recycling Extravaganza that took place yesterday with this review…read more 25 Stars to Jim Twigg for putting together such a great event!!! The traffic flow was good and smooth. It was amazing. One location took computers, TV's and electronics for a small fee. Another took shredding for a donation to animal rescue. Pull around the curve and donations were taken for fabric, yarn, and sewing items. Next stop, a new non-profit that takes shoes of all types for men, women and children and gives them away. They also take donations year round at their store Elite Feet in Hawthorne Plaza. ReStore and Goodwill were there. Lo and Behold Revolve was taking bicycles to refurbish and give to others who need transportation and their children. Yet another was taking medical equipment like wheelchairs and shower seats...to be sold at a very low price to those in need. Another was taking lawn mowers and equipment for use during community garden creating. It gets even better with someone taking books...all kinds of books and the profits from the sale of those will go to charity. Last but not least and these guys get 25 Stars, too. The Overland Park Police officers were there taking expired medications. Throwing these down the toilet is bad for our water system....don't do that. Save those and donate them during this event next year. They are destroyed properly when given to the officers. If you missed this event this year...you missed out. Watch the Overview for next year when you can make these donations and get stuff you don't want out of your house or apartment and either help others or help the environment. What a beautiful day and fantastic event this was....all thanks to the City of Overland Park and the volunteers that offered to help make it possible.

It touted that you could create an on-line account, review your work history, and see what your future payments (assuming they pay anything by the time I am 67) might be. I tried to create an account and was locked out promptly for providing the wrong answers to their questions. I called them and the wait wasn't too long. Apparently the answer tripping me up was my address. I kept on guessing and figured out it was my address from my childhood (7 addresses ago). Hell, that address doesn't even exist anymore! Seriously, what is wrong with them? They mail me the annual statements to my correct address. Why don't they update the address at that point? Anyhow, they ask me some other questions I don't know the correct answers to and they tell me to go to the office this week. Little did we know that the government would be "shutdown." My wife heard that they weren't completely shutdown and since we were in that neck of the woods anyhow, perhaps everyone else wouldn't go as they thought it was closed. So the theory goes! I get in and there is a big metal detector and four burly guards. They are turning away a lot of people as the office is only performing certain services during the shutdown. Change of address and sending me an activation code is one of the services that they were performing! I only saw a dozen people in the office, so I was rather happy. It probably took about 15 minutes to be seen, which was rather good with their staffing issues yesterday. The staff member had all the personality of a worn out rug and didn't smile at any point during the conversation. There were several paragraphs of disclaimers being read out loud by her to me, which I had to agree with. After it's all said and done, she processed my change of address and mailed me an activation code (it'll take two weeks). I looked at the print out she handed me and she spelled Kansas City wrong (Citsy) and had a few other typos. I am horrified as I not only bumbled on line for an hour, but called them and now came into the office with probably about 2 hours wasted. I ask her to fix it. She insists it will be auto-corrected. I am quite doubtful, but she is already taking the next person. Who is willing to be that when I try to register online that it will require me to enter my address typographical errors and all? Let's hope that I can change the address at that point, as I'll be in the same position a few years from now when I can't recall the incorrect address. The guards smile at me and say good bye on the way out and were in a far better mood than the staff. You know what was really sad? I was in company of a few dozen people while I was there in the waiting room. Only one was a senior (he is retiring in two weeks) and the rest were in their teens, 20s, and a few in their 30s. All of them APPEAR to be fit for work, yet were there complaining that their checks hadn't arrived for disability. If they truly are disabled in the sense of the word, I feel really bad for them. I feel even worse for them if they are NOT disabled and were gaming the system. They do a disservice to themselves and the rest of the taxpayers. SAD!

His radar is up for loud conversations that might escalate. He makes sure things are safe. People get upset about their money when they don't understand delays and things. All in all we were very pleased with the professionalism and courteous nature of everyone. People there killed time during the wait by visiting with each other or using their phones to play games or surf. There is free Wi-Fi even. Be prepared to spend some time unless you arrive early. Since we are in the age of technology I tried to do my due diligence with the new feature available to renew online avoiding the hassle of driving here, waiting in line and having to take a picture on demand. WELL, something went wrong and it wasn't processed online and there is no way for me to "redo it" or update anything so here I am. I love the movie Zootopia and I see exactly what they mean with the reference to the sloths in their storyline. I know it was referring to the workers being slow, but it's actually just a slow and detailed process that could cost a lot legally if not processed correctly. Which explains why we all have to wait patiently, regardless if we want to or not. Another factor that makes the process longer than it should be could be due to being understaffed? Why does it seem like the things we need the most from license to registration you have to wait the longest to receive help? I really appreciate having digital options, but I really think we should focus on the base of the issue which would be creating a quicker in person process. The lady at the front desk was doing the job of 3 people at once. Despite the fact that she did everything seamlessly, we have to admit that she could probably help more if there was only one job to focus on and another person or perhaps two other people could help those on the computer and needing to drive so just one person can focus on everyone coming in the door every 30 seconds. Whew! This job isn't one for the weak and this type of work should be praised upon just like any essential worker from postal workers to nurses. It's just heartbreaking to see that we are spreading the people we need the most too thin. Sorry for the rant, but I clearly have plenty of time(: I just hope to see the day where places like this make life easier for everyone and something we look forward to instead of somewhere we avoid like the plague if we can!

If you're coming here & you don't check-in online, be prepared to wait a good 2 hours. The waiting line for the lady who walked in behind me was almost 2.5 hours. I would definitely go the online route first. Make sure to have all required documents with you, though. Nothing upsets the cashiers, & yourself, when you don't have it all with you. I mean, come on...who wants to deal with someone who doesn't have all their stuff together? Then you have to come back & that involves waiting again. The librarian was helpful and pleasant and of course I like their check out scanner that can take a stack of books and check them at one time. Some libraries do not have the newer scanner. They had a good selection of children's books, which is where I was at primarily. They have some activity tables for children as well. I also liked the family restroom for when a diaper needs to be changed. There is parking that is covered next to it.

Built in 1897 as Kansas City's workhouse jail and later served as a storage facility, marine training center and an animal euthanasia center until being abandoned in 1972. With it's dark history, graffiti, collapsed roofs, dark stairwells, debris, and remnants of homelessness everywhere, my solo visit was slightly macabre and a bit scary not knowing if I was alone when turning each corner. I did run into two other explorers and one homeless person in my self guided tour of the darkside. There was talk about a decade ago of renovating the property into a venue for weddings and concerts but that failed to materialize. My advise to you is put on your big-boy pants (or girl) grab a friend and go explore an iconic architectural piece of history before it's too late.
