The Truman Courthouse - Jackson County Courthouse aka the Truman Courthouse, Independence

The Jackson County Courthouse in Independence has that sturdy 1933 Classical Revival look that…read moremakes the whole square feel anchored, a limestone block of a building designed by Keene & Simpson with the kind of symmetry and civic confidence that counties like to show off in that era. Jackson County was named for Andrew Jackson back in 1826 when he was still the frontier hero of New Orleans, and Independence has been the county seat from the start, chosen for both its position at the head of the western trails and for the aspirational name settlers wanted to give their new town. The Truman connection is woven into the place because Harry S. Truman served here as county judge, pushing for road improvements, budgets and later the courthouse renovation itself, so the building carries his name as a nod to the years he spent shaping the county before he ever reached Washington. On the grounds, you will find a context plaque that lays out the courthouse's history and adds an interpretive layer to what otherwise looks like a straightforward Depression-era courthouse. The historic "Truman Courthouse" is also known as the Jackson County Courthouse. Before he was…read morepresident, when he was a "Presiding Judge" (aka County Executive), Truman had offices here. I suppose they refer to it nowadays as the Truman Courthouse so as to not confuse it with the modern Jackson County Courthouse in Kansas City. The structure does double duty: It is still a working courthouse. The Jackson County Historical Society also occupies space. The Society maintains an archive. If you're just walking around downtown Independence, you can take pictures of the building's exterior and statuary. There are also markers acknowledging westward expansion trails. (e.g. the Oregon, California and Santa Fe Trails.) If you're interested in seeing Harry S. Truman's office, the Brady Courtroom or the Jackson County Art Museum, you have to go the "www.jchs*org/truman-courthouse/" website and make advance reservations.

Many of the practices are unethical. Crappy workers keep their jobs. Hard workers have been kicked out the door. Proper training doesn't exist. HR is entirely in the company's favor on everything. Work schedules change all of the time, so that makes family life or getting an education hard. There is absolutely no appreciation for our work. Haven't received a raise in 3 years. After 60 plus years, a union was voted in. Lake City, itself, is not the problem. It's the company that the plant is contracted out to, ATK.
