Ask the Community - Social Security

Do you have to have an appointment to talk with SS?

No - you can call or you can go to the office. I suggest going early and plan to be there for a few hours.

I've gotten married and changed my last name. Does anyone know how much it costs to get a new social security card? And do they accept debit cards?

    It is free.

How can we make an appointment on line?

I do not believe making an appointment, on line, is available. However, if you call the customer service number, they can make an appointment for you.

Last week I graduated from the Fall 2024 Citizens Police Academy (CPA), and that's what prompted me…read moreto write this review. The CPA is a 12-week class that educates citizens about the mission undertaken by the men and women of the Lenexa Police Department. Each 3.5-hour, weekly class featured a different topic, different departments, and different presenters. I was really blown away by what I learned about all the various ways the LPD serves our city, the passion of the employees to protect and serve, and the quality of the facilities, leadership, vehicles, equipment, and more. I learned that there are other educational opportunities that the LPD offers Lenexa residents, including a ride-along program; a semi-annual, four-week use of force workshop; and a summer camp for tweens and teens. I intend to avail myself of some of those! Most of all, I came away with a greater respect for the difficult work these folks do, both physically and emotionally. It gave me more appreciation for the sacrifices they make on our behalf and a greater understanding of how much they deserve our support. I highly recommend this course for anyone considering a career in law enforcement, residents wanting a better idea of how your tax dollars are being used, and resources available to us at no expense (beyond our tax payments) to help prevent crime and keep ourselves safe. If you want to find out more, visit the LPD's Facebook page or website, or call community liaison Master Officer Danny Chavez at the non-emergency number.

The librarian was helpful and pleasant and of course I like their check out scanner that can take a stack of books and check them at one time. Some libraries do not have the newer scanner. They had a good selection of children's books, which is where I was at primarily. They have some activity tables for children as well. I also liked the family restroom for when a diaper needs to be changed. There is parking that is covered next to it.

The architectural design and all of the features included just makes the experience even better! The area for children has everything you could ever think of. From a large coloring table, to books for all ages & ethnicities. Regular tables and chairs to innovative reading nooks and huge lounging chairs. Whoever took on this project creating this library should be declared an artist if they aren't already. It is as if they are trying to prove a point that libraries don't have to be boring or just a place for books, but truly a spot to spend time with your family and everyone can find something to enjoy. These 5 star reviews tell no lies and I just had to add my 33 cents, since only 2 would just not be enough. Catch me at the library how about that?!

The traffic flow was good and smooth. It was amazing. One location took computers, TV's and electronics for a small fee. Another took shredding for a donation to animal rescue. Pull around the curve and donations were taken for fabric, yarn, and sewing items. Next stop, a new non-profit that takes shoes of all types for men, women and children and gives them away. They also take donations year round at their store Elite Feet in Hawthorne Plaza. ReStore and Goodwill were there. Lo and Behold Revolve was taking bicycles to refurbish and give to others who need transportation and their children. Yet another was taking medical equipment like wheelchairs and shower seats...to be sold at a very low price to those in need. Another was taking lawn mowers and equipment for use during community garden creating. It gets even better with someone taking books...all kinds of books and the profits from the sale of those will go to charity. Last but not least and these guys get 25 Stars, too. The Overland Park Police officers were there taking expired medications. Throwing these down the toilet is bad for our water system....don't do that. Save those and donate them during this event next year. They are destroyed properly when given to the officers. If you missed this event this year...you missed out. Watch the Overview for next year when you can make these donations and get stuff you don't want out of your house or apartment and either help others or help the environment. What a beautiful day and fantastic event this was....all thanks to the City of Overland Park and the volunteers that offered to help make it possible.
