I can't believe I haven't heard of this place earlier. What an absolute treat!…read more I stopped in here last Friday lunch when it was cold and blustery out and I was in desperate need of soup. As per, I was in a bit of hurry so I was chuffed that their daily soup, Tomato and Leek Soup with Cheesy Toast, was available takeaway. Whilst waiting for my cuppa soup, I grabbed one of the only seats available and took it all in. Stanley's was absolutely packed; there were ladies who lunch, businessmen in suits, grandmas enjoying a cuppa and a hipster teen out with his mother. It struck me that this is the kind of place where everyone feels comfortable. The interior is simple, clean and fuss free with ceiling to floor windows that make it beautifully light inside (even when it is miserable outside). Of course, there are also exposed light features but in this case they work brilliantly with the fresh, white interior. Within 10minutes my takeaway soup had arrived with the bag of cheesy goodness and boy, was I excited. When I got home, I transferred the piping hot soup to a bowl and noticed that they had served it with fresh sage and a drizzle of cream. The little things really can a difference. The soup smelt absolutely devine and tasted equally as good; thick and hearty with a rich tomato flavour. Combined with the cheesy toast this was most definitely a substantial lunch. I was satisfied, full and ready to steam through an afternoon of work! I will most definitely be back, on the reg.

This weekend was a double visit. On Saturday a coffee and blueberry muffin was a mid morning treat. The muffin wasn't the biggest in the world but was lovely and moist with lots of berries. Sunday was a working bee and the homemade chicken and beef and ale pies hit the spot at lunchtime and provided the energy to keep going with the wallpaper stripping. If you want to eat in they have an excellent menu with old fashioned favourites such as savoury mince.

Then the sign by the garden captured my vision, pointing directly to this Cafe, meaning, this might be the One... People-friendly environment that anyone can just walk in, wander around, take a peek, enjoy his time in front of the counter for dessert, coffee or just for a sweet thought. There I was. Right by the counter, smelling the freshly grounded coffee and words just came out of my mouth: An Americano, with a bit of milk please. Then my eyes were totally attracted by the whole shelf of dessert next to me. Clearly I can tell, lemon yoghurt cake, chocolate caramel slice, passion fruit cheesecake, date scone, brownie etc. All fresh and with reasonable price. Unfortunately just had my lunch, otherwise I would throw myself into these sweet treats. Sitting down, waiting for my coffee to come, the country-style Cafe is such a delight to your eyes and mind. At least, I enjoyed a moment just looking at the light in the ceiling. There my coffee came. Not too strong, not too plain, just right. Not too bitter, not too sweet, just right. It is a man's work with wisdom, with experience and with enthusiasm. Take a sip, let it linger, the chocolate, creamy and a bit nutty taste was just perfect, with the afternoon sun shining to warm my heart. Yes, I am a coffee-holic, but, why not? Enjoy your coffee there, enjoy the sun.

The food is pretty darn good and definitely on the cheaper side of things. I recommend the French toast, berry smoothie and a scrumptious apricot slice to finish it all off. If you're a beast with a sweet tooth like me that is. I've also had the burgers and sandwiches from here and they're always a treat. They're quite decently sized and are served with chippies too (bonus!) The service is friendly and fairly quick and of course the location is great!

At Bay Cafe, they have quite a bit of seating inside with small tables surrounding one large rectangle table, and then outside there are two tables which suit warmer days. The coffee my dad, partner and I ordered was fantastic, so I can't argue with the barista skills here. As we were only after a light snack, we opted on a few homemade sausage rolls, and a few date scones. The rolls, were ok, could have been possibly crispier to the bite as one would expect, but filled the gap. The date scones on the other hand were amazing! Full of fruit, and was done to perfection! So I must recommend them, the cheese scones however definitely not as nice and lacking that scone like bounce. The service is kind, and they have amazing quick service so I would recommend popping in for a morning or afternoon coffee.

I'm usually one to go for the underdog! So in Mairangi Bay I may opt out of coffee at Papermoon and…read morerather head across the road to Bay Café simply because Papermoon is always packed and Bay Café is, well... the underdog. I have to say they do OK. But only just OK. Their only real step up is that they are open on public holidays when the other cafes in Mairangi Bay are closed. And I think this is probably the only time they nab all the Bay's locals. Their food is sufficient and their drinks do the job, but there is nothing about this place that makes it stand out from the crowd and it does look a bit run down and dreary. It could use with a boost as the location is great and I do think this wee café has some big potential.
