I came here for lunch yesterday, seeing as it is right across the lane from my work! It was incredibly busy when I arrived, however owner Ruben was friendly and welcoming and the other lady taking the orders was efficient. However, I could tell they were feeling the stress with so many people! After overhearing another customer telling his friends that the "chipotle beef was so delicious", I just knew I had to order it! Served with a fresh tomato and onion salsa, herbs and their homemade hot sauce, the chipotle beef bagel was absolutely melt in your mouth, to.die.for, scrumdiddlyumptious! I could have eaten another one (or two) it was that good! But watch out, it is spicy, and had me grabbing for my water bottle every few bites! I can't wait to go back and try more of their toppings. With just the two of them working, it makes for slowww service, but verrrrry friendly and personal service. Basically, don't drop in for a quick takeaway coffee and bagel on the run, it's more like a beachside cafe on island time at a takeaway window on Vulcan Lane. The bagel was pretty good - I got some kind of riff on a normal offering in order to get melted cheese and avocado together with some chili flakes. It's not a giant NY style bagel (still haven't found a proper NY bagel here, I know I know) but it'll satisfy in the meantime. They were happy to mix and match their offerings, and their bagel/coffee special is the best deal in town (you get your coffee for $2 - whatever kind you want!) There were some familiar items, staples at previous locations such as sticky black rice and potato and feta cakes. Kerry recognised the chef from Jafa and was happy. The food took as long as we were warned but it was all worth it. Ryan opted for French Toast with Bacon which looked and I'm sure tasted spectacular. Kris on a pre Japan budget went for a couple of sides, a potato cake with smoked salmon which was presented nicely. Luke as he usually does headed straight for the lunch menu and had some sort of chorizo stew I didn't catch the name of. Kerry and I opted for the same thing - the Red Flannel Hash. I assume the name refers to all the red ingredients and the dish itself was perfect; fried baby red potatoes, red onions, chorizo and poached eggs. Thankfully the new owners have kept things top notch. They did mix up the menu a little bit, but just offered a new range of great food. They have a regular $10 special salad for lunch, which is great value. In winter they offer a delicious kumara and bacon soup - perfect for a drizzly, cold winter's day. They use Allpress coffee and most of the baristas do a good job. I also try to keep my diet "paleo" so the paleo breakfast for $17 is a great way of having brunch but keeping healthy. Not quite as delicious as an Eggs Benedict, but much better for the waistline.
