Worst optometrist experience ever. And that's saying a lot. I've been wearing contacts for 46 years and every year I see the optometrist for an updated prescription. Our insurance changed and I was no longer able to go to the doctor I used last year so I made an appointment with Dr. Peterson. The office was unprofessional and outdated but that wasn't the issue. Dr. Peterson didn't even look at my eyes! He did a quick vision test then sent me to order my contacts. I asked him how he knows the health of my eyes without even looking at them. He replies with, Well you refused the imaging ( I refused the imaging because it triggers a major migraine for me which he made it clear he didn't believe when I told him) all my other doctors were able to do a thorough exam without the use of imaging. He then says fine, come on back.... He does a quick look in my eyes with a light and says all looks fine. At this point I'm so annoyed I just want to get my prescription and leave. After leaving I noticed that they wrote me the wrong prescription for my glasses and charged me for the imaging I did not get. A complete waste of time! I call and tell them that I want a refund which she does right away, no questions asked, making me think that this happens a lot. Save yourself the time and go somewhere else and get a thorough exam. read more

The doctor is very cool, professional and affable. His office staff....that's another story. After waiting several weeks for prescription sunglasses, they were cracked and were also the wrong color. After getting lots of negative attitude from the office manager, I just asked for my money back, and even then I was short changed $10 !!! After so much run-around, I didn't care. All I have to say is that this team and Dr. are absolute Vacation Savers. Half way through my second flight to CA from GA, I realized I totally forgot to pack my contacts...not good for someone who was on the first vacation in several years, had a family wedding to attend, and was going hiking in Utah after...when going out, I always wear my contacts...and I couldn't wear my new sunglasses. Anyway, I called them from the airport in total panic...the kind woman on the other end had me an appt the very next day!!!!! I realized it was going to be a hit to my wallet as a Dr. in CA and paying out of pocket could be super pricy, but the Dr. showed compassion and did my wallet a big favor by offering me a reduced rate...I was grateful. My experience with this team was nothing but a pleasure. The Dr. was kind, friendly, and got me seeing in contacts that day!!!!! Dr. Petersen has been my optometrist for 4 years now and I'm thrilled with him as my doctor for the following reasons: 1) He's experienced, knowledgeable, patient, and takes his time to explain the anatomy of the eye and its ailments. He is funny, dynamic, compassionate, kind, intelligent, and open minded. 3) He will answer every single question you have no matter how much time it takes. He goes out of his way to make sure his patients walk away happy and satisfied. 4) His staff is professional, helpful, warm, and always greets patients. Booking appointments is easy! 5) His office is conveniently located in Dana Point. There's always parking and his office is clean, decorated nicely, and kid friendly! 6) When I say kid friendly, Dr. Petersen and his staff go out of their way to keep your kid entertained. He has puzzles, books, candy, water, toys, stuffed animals... Not to mention Dr. Petersen himself is absolutely wonderful when it comes to kids. He can mimic Donald Duck, he is sweet to toddlers, and even redirects them in a fun and kind way when they're getting into no nos. 7) Lastly, I used to only wear eye glasses because my eyes would be blood shot by noon if I wore contacts. When I went to Dr Petersen as a new patient he fixed this for me and I've been wearing contacts from 6:30am - 11:00pm thanks to him. In conclusion, I highly recommend Dr. Petersen as an optometrist. This office needs to get it together. They are extremely chaotic, unorganized and RUDE. Dr. P is a nice guy and is cool and I was a patient for 3 years but on my last visit, I had enough of them all together. He asked me to try on lenses that were clearly the wrong RX and then I went back to the exam room and waited for 20 minutes for him to come back to the point where I had to walk out to the front desk and ask them if the doc forgot about me. There was only one other person in the waiting room during that time. Then he wrote down my RX incorrectly TWICE in a row causing a lot of back a forth with their office to get my correct lenses. Then, I went to go get new glasses from another provider because I didn't really trust them to be honest, and Dr. Ps office faxed the RX over 3 times in correctly. It was just a lot of annoying little things that I figured I would factor in to deciding to never return as a patient. There's more...my last exam was August 2016 (which was my 3rd year as a patient), they called me in December (4 months after exam) to tell me that I owed them for a box of contacts because apparently if I get a contact lens exam from them I have to purchase my first box from them. It sounded bogus and I was annoyed that it was 4 months later but I paid for the one box just be done with them. Well, it looks like I wasn't done with them It has now been almost one year since my last exam and I received a bill in the mail from them for $14 FROM 2016!!!!!! FOR WHAT? and why had no one told me earlier, either on the day of my exam or in December when they called me? I just called the office and spoke to the front desk, the man I spoke with (won't name any names) was extremely rude and inconsiderate because when I asked why I owe $14 and what it was for and why I was getting this bill a year later, he said, " it doesn't really matter at this point, you owe $14 regardless so whats your CC number" not even a sorry or a let me look into this or let me see what it's even for. Getting an eye exam once a year should not have to be this hectic. I will definitely not be returning. read more

I love Dr. Peterson! I have been coming to him for a few years now. I have vision problems so I am in his office more than the average person, I would say. Pros: Dr. Peterson is really good at what he does. He is really nice and helpful and always tells you the truth. His staff is really nice and helpful as well. His office is always maintained and comfortable to be in. Dr. Peterson knows magic tricks which is always a hit with the kids. Cons: Sometimes it can take a little long to get called in. I am super picky with health care and Dr Petersen's mannerisms put me at ease. His education and care have kept my eyes 100%. I am so grateful to them for having the doctors' personal cell phone on the office voicemail as I had what I though was an emergency and it was off hours; I was able to get help right away. Over the phone, he tried to help me understand that it would be ok, but I told him I was nervous about the situation and really wanted to get looked at. This is probably the most and unorganized eye doctor I've ever been to .While doctor William Peterson is a great eye doctor was very helpful his staff are far from helpful and make it very difficult to get things done .It's taken me over 4 and a 1/2 months to get my contact prescription sent to me after 10 phone calls I barely have got my contacts .The kid they have working there getting him to answer questions is like pulling teeth getting him to follow through and actually use common sense is a wasted effort .Fortunately there is a lady there that does a better job but they do things like forget inform you that your insurance doesn't cover certain things so when I went in expecting to pay a $140 I ended up having to pay over $200 for my visit on top of which they charged me $40 to try on a pair of color blind correcting glasses .Really $40 to try on a pair of color blind correcting glasses to me that's just blatantly screwing your patients hopefully they read this review and make some changes because I can guarantee myself and anyone I know will never go there again . read more

His office staff is efficient and I appreciate the personalized reminder calls before appointments. PATIENTS BEWARE - My insurance company sent me to Dr. Petersen, who is in Dana Point, where I live. I went to get sunglasses that cut down the glare, a problem that I was having, The doctor recommended a designer pair of Maui Jim glasses for $200.00, (after coverage), of which I was okay with if it corrected the glare problem. As time went by the glare was not being cut down at all. Yesterday, January 2, 2014 I found out that he never sold me the Maui Jim lenses but SWITCHED lenses and still charged me the $200.00. THIS IS FRAUD in plain English, thus I write Buyer Beware and totally DO NOT RECOMMEND DR. PETERSEN! Point of interest, when I called this to his attention he would do nothing to correct this situation and in fact wanted to charge me an additional $163.00 to get the Maui Jim lenses he originally sold me. read more
