The challenge for most individuals buying or selling precious metals is that they don't do it very often and they must negotiate with dealers who do it every day. I had 22 gold coins I needed to sell and ended up talking to Oscar at Portland Gold Buyers.com as my first stop. He convinced me that he was giving me a fair price on my coins and I , unfortunately, trusted him. I then went across the street to Affordable Jewelry and Precious Metals (394 SW Washington Avenue) and found out they would have paid me $3,100 more for my 22 gold coins. I then talked to Oscar and asked him to match his closest competitors price and he refused, so, my decision to trust Oscar cost me $3,100. I am not telling you to not use Oscar if you should choose to do so but what I am telling you is check for pricing somewhere else first (like AJPM across the street who actually shows their pricing on a live screen in their office). Based on my experience, if you don't have a good understanding of market price when you start negotiating with Oscar, you are going to lose money as he is focused on maximizing his return on your metals even if the pricing he offers is not reflective of the true value of your metals. Interesting enough I brought to them some silver bars from Apmex still in its unopened packaging and they said its fake. I took those very same bars to a different coin shop and they said it was pure .999. Some coin dealers just wont have liquidity or cash to pay you, so perhaps thats what happened here. Friendly staff and it's one of the few places around to recycle metal. However, I was told over the…read morephone that the rate for refining silver was 88%. In reality it was 73%. They offered me a check on the spot or gave me the option of waiting a couple weeks for it to be refined. I asked what the difference was and they only mentioned two things: the amount of non-silver possibly mixed in (which would change the rate I received) or the cost of silver on that particular day. They said, "your silver tests as pure so we're confident of giving you a payout today." After depositing my check and returning home I thought something wasn't right. I called and asked why there was a discrepancy based on my calculation versus the check amount. They said it was 6-7% less if I opted for a check on the spot (which they did not tell me in person.) That would bring it to 81%. I hung up, checked my math again and realized I was only paid 73%. I called them back and they said that rate they charge for immediate payout changes from time to time. Huh? Then, there was mention of spot price versus physical price. I had several options of places to bring my scrap. I'm very disappointed that I didn't have accurate information going into this. They offered to let me bring the check back and refine my silver on the spot. But I had already deposited the check.
