    14yo Pepper
    Roger E.

We started using WVH when our Vet. office in Florence closed, during COVID, because our son lived near WVH, and we always had a positive experience. Just last week, we were back, sadly, for an end of life visit for my wonderful 14yo labrador "Pepper". The facilities and entire staff were absolutely the best. They have a dedicated room with a sofa and private outdoor enclosed patio for a final little outside sniff/walk. They use 'clickers' so you can spend time with your pet and then let them know when to come back in. End of life is so difficult with our furry family members, the absolutely smooth, caring process that we had at WVH helped make a really really difficult day go just a little less terrible.

Got here at 12:00 am didn't leave till 4:33 my dog was sick and throwing up like she was dying and they take so long to tell us what's going on they over charge on tests I would not recommend going here I probably won't ever again.

My 12 yr old dog was having a rough day & I was too. I called WVH & was able to get a same day appointment. All of the staff was great & Dr Nelson was exceptional. He made my dog & I feel better. I left reassured that together we are doing everything necessary to keep my old dog comfortable & happy. After my appointment I received two calls, checking in to make sure Fisher was tolerating his new medication well & doing ok overall. Great overall experience!!

    Waiting. Waiting, waiting some more.

So, I thought I should write my own review so others wont be worried. I have a federal license to have exotic animals for educational purposes and my fennec fox became ill at one of the worst times. Vets that can treat them are limited even at the best of times. His usual vet was unavailable and after some calls around I was suggested to call here. It was new news to me that they except exotics now. I called first and came in when they said the exotic vet started his shift. They took him in back right away while I filled out the paperwork. There was a wait of course since it's an ER for animals but I wasn't focused on the time. I've waited longer in other situations. It'll depend what cases are showing up. Everyone was nice. The vet tech took a through history. The vet was knowledgeable and explained things clearly. He even had the fennec reference ranges, but I had brought my copy that I have, since that's not always the case for exotics. They sent regular photo updates while he was hospitalized, so I included a couple. They also encouraged my visiting him or calling. He came home after a day and a half and is improving. As far as cost, it was actually not that bad. I'd say it's about on par with the current pricing at my regular vet, if we had to do that many tests, treatment and hospitalization.

My 8 year old very active Kitty became lethargic, stopped eating, and was very warm on the eve of the 22nd of December, on the 23rd when he was no better I contacted the Salem, Emergency Vet at approximately 10: 30 p.m and was told to bring him right in. Only to receive a call about 15 minutes later telling me that the ER had to stop accepting patients as they were over run with emergencies. They suggested the Corvallis Emergency vet. Sadly, I had to drive my very ill Kitty the 50 plus minutes in the pouring rain to Corvallis where I remained until 5 a.m., hundreds of $$ later, some RX's, and no diagnosis. I left with a still very sick kitty. By the end of the day on the 23rd Kitty was not better. I again rang Salem Vet ER and was told to bring him in. after a couple of hours I received an estimate for tests, IV's, and an overnight stay so he could be watched and remain on an IV. The estimate was far more than I could afford. Kevin was very accomodating and willing to work with his team to have the estimate fine tuned leaving only the most urgent and efficient tests and treatments to be conducted. This did bring my bill down somewhat. The final conclusion was to leave my Kitty overnight so he could receive antibiotics and hydration via IV as he had a bacterial infection. I picked KittyB up at approximately 10 p.m. Christmas Day. with a couple of antibiotics and an appetite stimulant, he was already much better and has improved daily. Though all in I spent over $1200. the experience was a thousand times better than the Corvallis ER I must give special praise to Kelly Marie and Kevin, both have the most compassionate and soothing approach to both humans and pets. Also Lisa at the front was terrific as was Hailey.

The short version: they saved our dog…read more First off the thing to understand about this place is it's essentially 1 large open area so as a pet parent you see EVERYTHING. While they do have rooms for families to be in private or for waiting with a reactive animal you are in an open main area with other families and see the staff interacting with patients, parents and each other. IMO this makes the medicine they practice better because of the accountability. They have a small snack area with tea and coffee, especially good if you are there much longer than you anticipated. Since I brought our dog alone (my husband stayed home with our son) the front desk staff gladly watch our pup when I needed to use the restroom. Being an open concept you can't help but overhear the phone calls taken by the staff from concerned pet parents. An item of note was call after call taken from concerned pet parents calling because their animal had ingested *insert food of concern*. Instead of telling people to come in without knowing if it was a true concern the staff and doctors asked numerous questions about the animal and food ingested to confirm if it was necessary for their animal to be brought in. I got the sense that they wanted to prevent someone from coming in needlessly, not only saving that person's finances but enabling them to focus on the ones that truly needed help. Keeping in mind this is an emergency clinic it's expected for there to be a premium with costs but what I observed was a staff that did what they could to provide care to their patients as effectively as possible. In one case a pair of rabbits were brought in that were sent home without charge. They were found to not actually be having an emergency but just needed to be given the correct amount of medication (the wife gave the husband the 'I told you so' look lol). Our Veg story: We brought our 9 month old puppy to VEG on Christmas day with a suspected intestinal blockage. My husband had called ahead so they were expecting us. After Cera's initial intake they provided an initial estimate which they were happy to scale back (we declined initial labs in favor of just getting x-rays to confirm the suspected blockage). They proposed a round of meds and fluids to see if the mass would have any movement and sent us home with instructions to return later that evening for a 2nd round of xrays. I took Cera home so we could have Christmas dinner with our family and brought her back after her kid went to bed. Unfortunately the 2nd x-rays confirmed the mass had not budged and surgical intervention was needed to save her life. When discussing Cera the doctor asked me questions about our family, I shared that Cera's kid, my 10 year old son, has autism and Cera was very important to him. She asked about their relationship and said it would be good to bring him to see her in the morning. They got Cera comfortable and they enabled me to stay with her until they were ready to start her surgery. I went home to get some sleep and the doctor called me a few hours later to report the surgery was successful. Later that morning I brought my son to see her. I had heard the doctor tell the staff about my son before her surgery and the staff were so kind and accommodating with my son, assuring him they would help her to come home as soon as she was able. We went home for dinner and later after I got him to bed I went back, prepared to spent a 2nd night there. Upon my arrival the doctor said that pending a good next few hours I should be able to take her home before morning. Keeping in mind our bill was more than I care to admit or thought I'd ever spending on vet care getting her home was not only good for her but meant we would have to be charged for a 2nd night's stay. Just after 1am I drove home with our sweet Cera and had a very happy son in the morning when he came downstairs to find us home. Our family is so grateful. Cera is doing great & expected to make a full recovery.

Too many times we have gone to a Vet emergency clinic, our dog taken away, and we sit in a room wondering what's going on and panicking about where our dog is, is she scared, not getting updates, not understanding anything. Our dogs are always terrified to go in, they HATE being taken away from us, and we hate it. That is NOT the case here. When they say open concept - they mean OPEN. You are seated in an area, WITH your pet. The doctor and nurses come to where you're sitting, they sit on the floor with you. You're sitting next to other patients and their people, sitting on other couches near you. You're seeing them x-ray, do labs, triage, etc. on every single pet that comes in the door. You see all the chaos going on in a Vet ER as they do their passdowns and triage. It all becomes visible, and we left there understanding two things: 1) veterinarian emergency is chaos. There's always something. There's always pets in need. And there's always people wondering what's going on and just as scared as their pets. 2) Being able to SEE that first hand, helped us understand, empathize, but also bond with other pets and their owners - as we all sat together, talked while we waited, and created a sense of community in during that time when stress is at it's highest, with our furry family members.

Dr. Gray was amazing with our dog, took his time examining her and listening to her heart, checked her legs, hips and back. He explained what Isabella is going through, was very thorough in explaining her condition. He went over possible medical procedures that could be done later if that's what we would want to do. He didn't push for extra tests or x-rays. He gave us a good a good therapeutic treatment for her, that is the best for her at this stage. She was given a pain shot and they filled the other pain medication for her there. He also went over some things we should do and change in our home for her to make it easier for her to walk, sit and sleep. Discussed raising her food and water dish so she is not bending all the way down while eating or drinking. Make a ramp so she doesn't have to go up or down stairs and changed how many times a day she is fed. So 4-5 times a day instead of 2 times and just divided what she was eating in the 2 feedings into 4. This will help her acid reflux and her esophagus because that he said is irritated. We got more questions answered by a vet we saw for the first time, than we have with the vet she has been seeing. We were shocked when we were given the price break down of the visit because it was a lot cheaper than we thought we were going to pay. We would have paid at least $600 plus at our regular vet but this visit was only $223 and it was an urgent care visit which costs more. I am so impressed with how well they were with our dog and explaining everything to us, that we are changing vets. We will now be taking all our animals here. Yeah, I may have to drive 30 minutes to get there as to only 10 minutes to our old vet; but it totally worth the drive! Thank you for making us feel comfortable and helping Isabella with her pain.
