It was a good life!

As long as I live I will never forget the care and compassion shown to me and my dog Izzy at Wilvet. Three vets separately talked with me at length clearly explaining what was going on with my dog who previously been diagnosed as having only a bacterial infection compounded by colitus though she in fact, had cancer. They confirmed this quickly and professionally. They handled everything from the euthanasia process down to an easy referral to a creamation business. They actually listened to every one of my concerns and answered the questions I asked of them. They explained what tests were what down to reasons for the order they were in. Even the financial details were explained thoroughly. I actually experienced moments of joy during a horrendous, heartbreaking experience thanks to every single wonderful individual I communicated with at this hospital.

Wilvet of Salem is not only convenient with being 24 hours, but it also makes it much easier to get my cats to the urgent care vet during emergency situations since I live out south. The people, I mean everyone I've encountered here (4 times now) are incredible. They have the hugest hearts. Today I lost my old man cat Maxwell (Maxy boy) to old age and they were there for me every single step of the way. Tears were shared and the last moments with my cat and having two fantastic vets who are so compassionate towards both Max and me. I am sad, I lost my best friend but I couldn't have asked for a better crew to walk to the rainbow path for Maxy.

My 22 year old son's little Buddy of the past 15 years was attacked by a large dog. We called our regular vet and he was just in surgery so referred us to Wilvet. What an amazing staff! Dr.jennifer Kalenius was so precous. Honest a wonderful communixater, and educated us completely on Buddys condition. It was a touch and go situation yesterday and she helped us through each moment, even when he and our family were faced the hardest decision of shall we move forward and put him through surgery after surgery... or let lil Buddy go .We were at home when we got the call with xray results, called the kids together ,took our other dog and the baby down and surrounded Buddy with the love of his family in those final moments. Thank you to each staff member that checked on us, helped Buddy with his wounds and comfort, and reception staff for all of your help too. RIP OUR LITE BUDDY.

This is the waiting area.

They trat your animals with true respect and are open 24/7. They are very caring vets and the place is very clean. I highly recommend them for emergencies and regular check ups if you are in the area.

Such caring and compassionate people in the last moments of my best friend for the last 17 years of her 18.

These kind people made a very very nerve wracking, sad and frightening experience tolerable !!!…read more Each and every employee acted with compassion, empathy, and a desire to help this poor sick Kitty and me ! My 8 year old very active Kitty became lethargic, stopped eating, and was very warm on the eve of the 22nd of December, on the 23rd when he was no better I contacted the Salem, Emergency Vet at approximately 10: 30 p.m and was told to bring him right in. Only to receive a call about 15 minutes later telling me that the ER had to stop accepting patients as they were over run with emergencies. They suggested the Corvallis Emergency vet. Sadly, I had to drive my very ill Kitty the 50 plus minutes in the pouring rain to Corvallis where I remained until 5 a.m., hundreds of $$ later, some RX's, and no diagnosis. I left with a still very sick kitty. By the end of the day on the 23rd Kitty was not better. I again rang Salem Vet ER and was told to bring him in. after a couple of hours I received an estimate for tests, IV's, and an overnight stay so he could be watched and remain on an IV. The estimate was far more than I could afford. Kevin was very accomodating and willing to work with his team to have the estimate fine tuned leaving only the most urgent and efficient tests and treatments to be conducted. This did bring my bill down somewhat. The final conclusion was to leave my Kitty overnight so he could receive antibiotics and hydration via IV as he had a bacterial infection. I picked KittyB up at approximately 10 p.m. Christmas Day. with a couple of antibiotics and an appetite stimulant, he was already much better and has improved daily. Though all in I spent over $1200. the experience was a thousand times better than the Corvallis ER I must give special praise to Kelly Marie and Kevin, both have the most compassionate and soothing approach to both humans and pets. Also Lisa at the front was terrific as was Hailey.

When that is no longer the case and tough decisions need to be made, we had an excellent experience with Compassionate Care to say goodbye to our pup. Let me start by saying that every administrative and customer service interaction was timely, clear, and concise. The last thing you want in this situation are delays and confusion. Once I reached out through the contact link on their website, the email response with details about their different services happened within 10 minutes. An intake call to make arrangements for a euthanasia visit at our home was answered by a human and only took a few minutes. They recommend making a reservation 48-hours in advance, but we were put on a wait-list and we moved up our reservation when things opened up. I appreciate that you can reschedule (with four hours advance notice) as well. They have a variety of services, Eco-friendly cremation, and memorial pieces. Everything was arranged in advance, including payment through their web portal, so when the vet arrived for the appointment it was all about our boy and his (and our) comfort. Dr. Wilson clearly walked us through the process, gave us time to say goodbye, provided options, and was a wonderful partner in the process. Cremation is done at a facility in N. Portland, but they have the option of picking up the cremains in Oregon City which was more convenient for us. Having gone through this experience with another pet where we took them to the vet's office, I would highly recommend this option for the pet's comfort. It just felt better saying goodbye in a familiar space surrounded by love.

My experience was okay…read more I made a most difficult decision to let my beloved cat go after a long weekend spent almost entirely in ER trying to figure out why he would no longer eat and why his eye was swelling shut. And an even longer two or three weeks before that fighting to get him to eat. Like others here, Kevin was closer to me than my human family. I was busy with the doctors in ER so my partner called in to make the appointment to ease my stress. He said I was primary contact, but it was difficult to make that clear all the way until the day so communications were continually going to him. Not a big deal in the overall picture, but it didn't make the experience any easier. This was my cat for 8 years before I met my partner and while he loved my baby, I was the one with the lifelong bond. The doctor showed up within the time window allotted. We both found her a little cold. I felt like we were just a job and everything was done by number. My BF picked up my cat and carried him to me, but the doctor said we should do paperwork first which resulted in me putting him down after building up to do what I deemed impossible. I was emotional and crying. This really should somehow be handled before the visit. There were corrections to be made on the form. I was about to lose my baby and this only made me aware that I was filling out his death warrant. I am utterly heartbroken. I know holding your baby until the last minute is catharsis and closure, but I found it traumatizing. His passing was peaceful at least. Everyone's goodbye will be unique, and my example will not necessarily match what others experience. Everyone we spoke to was professional. I just wasn't feeling the compassion.

We literally walked in without an appointment as our Shiba had ingested some cherry laurel berries from a neighbor's tree. She was wobbly and threw up so we knew it was urgent. I found the entire staff very supportive and helpful. In both cases, there really wasn't anything to be done, both cats were elderly and sick, and I knew I was bringing them in for the last time. I really appreciated the staff and the vet's care, one cat had end stage renal disease, and the vet was very informative and caring about what his labs meant, etc. They have a very nice room set aside for those who are saying goodbye to their pets. I realize my experience doesn't have anything to do with acute problems in younger animals that may need surgery, etc., but I was impressed with the compassion and with the speed in which they took care of both of my cats when we were experiencing end of life choices.

After the teeth cleaning, they came back and said that our Porkie (Pomeranian/Yorkie) needs all her teeth extracted and that it would cost over $7,000. This is on top of the monthly payments, medications, and specialty food I purchased for her for weight control. I decided to get a second opinion because we definitely could NOT afford that price as senior citizens in their mid 70's. The new Clinic only removed a couple of teeth from her and charged me under $500. I called to cancel in November. The puppy was paid up on the charges, but I owed one more month, December, for the other one. I paid for the required December coverage, but it was then closed, and I had a new vet to take care of these little precious dogs. In January, I received a NEW BILL! The price was for $279.40, I still owed, they said. What? I paid for everything owed, including the price of the "Optium Wellness Plan," at the time of service. I did not have them bill me. They had me pay while I was in the clinic. I blame this company on its corporate business plan of ripping off the public, not on those who follow orders and do not use their intelligence to figure out the mistakes. VCA Pet Hospital on Commercial is far better than this hospital. The clinic I have moved to is Hoffmans on Lancaster, and they are fantastic, reasonable, and everyone is considerate and sharp in being able to help you and your pets receive excellent care. I never complain, but over the years it seems so many companies are ripping off the public, and it is time we say ..." NO MORE!"

This is a follow up review I wrote awhile back about Banfield and the way they treated (or didn't)…read moretreat my dog. I had (yes, I say "had") but I'll get to that, a beautiful Malamute/Husky (heavy on the Malamute side). We moved here and needed a new vet. I thought I could take the recommendation of of someone I thought I could trust but, oh was I wrong. I took her to Banfield to get her all signed up and meet the people she would be working with. Everybody seemed nice and helpful and she didn't give off any signs that anything was wrong, I should have been paying attention. When they weighed her they got her breed wrong, told me she was horribly overweight and wanted me to make an appointment to be checked up on after "Dr," had seen her. I tried to explain that she was a mixed breed but they blew me off. Then someone (I didn't know theír title and never learned who took the pets from here to there) came to get her and told me I had to wait; she was going alone. My baby came out and hid behind me (a behavior I had never seen before) and a person who identified themselves as a vet (no i.d., no proof of having graduated from a vetranariain school of any sort) told me my dog was massively overweight, told me a food I had to feed her and exactly how much and to come back in a month and she'd better have lost the weight. The years went by; some were good, some weren't, I reported every sign and signal the groomer gave me (yes, I trusted my groomer over my vet) but it didn't matter, they ignored me anyway. Then about 4 years ago things got really bad and despite my despairation, they still kept giving stupid advice, no advice, but the money kept rolling in for them. I asked people in Milwaukee, Keizer, New Jersey, for gosh sake! Then by a miracle, I got a recommendation right here. I took the first appointment they had open. People were awesome. They were surprised when I didn't get up to go with her so they said of course go with her. The technician was clearly labeled as such had started filling out her paperwork told me what a beautiful Malamute/Husky I had before I said a thing and then began to list some interesting facts about that mix. The x-ray (which had been taken down the hallway so I could see the whole procedure) was done and the vet (who was clearly identified as such and whose certificates and such were hung out in the lobby with everyone else who worked there) came to introduce herself, tell me what she thought about the vitals (technician with the facts had taken them) etc. As she was speaking, she put the film she had taken up, Her face changed as I looked at the film. I have studied enough anatomy and physiology to know what I was looking at, My baby girl's entire gut was full of cancer. My emotions: terror, sorrow, fear, and GUILT for letting this go on for HOW LONG? For me: as I said, guilt, horror, shock, pain in my heart, pain in my soul. 15 years, gone, because some idiots at Banfield couldn't do their job. They were speaking but weren't listening. I don't believe I've ever been so furious in my life. Then the surgeon (he had come down to talk to me too) said something to the effect of, oh well tomorrow was his day off but he'd come in anyway and see just what he could find. I believe I was lost in a fog until I went to pick her up the following day. Nobody looked good. They asked if I wanted to see what they had found; I did, Does anyone reading thís know what a 3 plus pound tumorous mass look like? I hope they let me put up a picture. I know some of you have fur babies who only weigh this much in total! Please don't take them to Banfield. The surgeon said he had taken all he could but if he had taken any more, she wouldn't have enough of a liver to survive. If the remaining tumors were fast, she had 3 weeks. If they were slow, 3 months. I gave her the best 3 weeks I knew how. She made it! I was ecstatic. I continued following all advíce and suggestions, 3 months came, looking good. Almost overnight everything went to hell. First, incontinence; I had 8 bowls of water in the house and 2 outside that I could barely keep filled. Then the food, she would only eat one type of canned food and that was only half a can a day. And watermelon cubes. Then the diarrhea every day, all the time. Then the loss of use of her back legs. They just went out from under her. She went over the Rainbow Bridge that night. I wonder if just one of those unnamed people at Banfield would have listened to me or bothered to learn about the breeds of animals they were "caring" for or done any damned thing except send me bills, my baby would still be alive, I had a talk with the surgeon. It could have been detected, it could have had treatments. If I hadn't KILLED her by taking her to Banfield. If you have a fur baby who is the light of your life, please, Please stay away from Banfield!
