The service and the atmosphere are awesome. The chicken pasta and spaghetti carbonara are lit.

Yummmm, chocolate!…read more Monk Bar Chocolatiers have a wide array of sweets to serve your dessert needs. When I walked along The Shambles, I was honing in for something to get my sweet tooth, and I spotted this lovely chocolatier. They offer various cream-filled chocolates and truffles, along with larger bar chocolates, drinks, and novelty items as well (I stopped by a month or so before Easter, so got to see a collection of beautiful chocolate eggs). I settled for a small box of 8 - I know I'll eat them all myself and it's my own fault if I get fat. Still, these aren't the types of chocolates you want to scarf down like a candy bar - these are rich and flavourful, and you'll get enjoyment out of each one. I'm personally a fan of truffles so I focused mainly on those, and on darker chocolates. My favourites from my collection were the Cocgnac Truffle, the Whisky Truffle, the Amaretto Truffle, the Coffee Cream (in dark chocolate), and the Gianduja. There was another one that I absolutely loved, something that was bitter and dark and presented like a truffle, but it was a limited item so they don't have it on their standard menu - bummer! If you're looking for chocolates and you're in York, you're bound to find something you like here. Their website lists many of their chocolates, but there are some unlisted options as well. Additional bonuses are friendly and knowledgeable staff, and competitive pricing. I meant to take some photos of my chocolates but...um...I ate them all too fast. Whoops? Guess I'll just have to go back for more.

This place is a bit of a magical surprise on your time travel through the Shambles…read more You begin smelling chocolate before you're even in front of the shop. And it's not uncommon to see hordes of people queuing up outside for one of their chocolate cups with chocolate sauce... and why WOULDN'T you get one of those???? I recommend getting the milk chocolate inside the dark chocolate cup. The rich, buttery, creaminess of the milk chocolate is accented even more by the ever-so-slight bitterness of the dark chocolate. Ok, so I'm now looking up the next train to York.....

A cute coffee shop/bar in a lovely location in York. We planned to visit for a drink on New Year's…read moreDay but they were closed, so only managed to pop in for breakfast the following day. The breakfast options are very limited (something I think they should expand on) so we both opted for a bacon sandwich, which came on toasted sourdough with tomatoes and tomato relish, and was really tasty. I had a flat white and my companion had a gingerbread latte, both really good quality. Then I couldn't resist 'breakfast dessert' and got a double chocolate brownie, which was lovely, really gooey but that's my preference. Prices were reasonable for the area and for a hipsterish establishment. The owners of the bar also rent out rooms in the apartment above the bar through Airbnb which is worth checking out if you're after an affordable stay in York.

I love this cafe/bar, it has a very laid back cool vibe. It stays open till 12.30am - I reckon it would be great and spend a chilled evening here. The deco inside is trendy with exposed brick, wooden tables and a random bike on the wall. It also has a pretty garden out the back which must be lovely in the summer, apparently you can book it out for parties. They serve nice and reasonably priced cocktails - me and my friend had a orange espresso martini which was delish! They also have food available and cakes. It's a shame I don't live nearby as it would definitely be my local place to go for breakfast and cocktails -obviously not at the same time though ;-)

Homemade ice cream, yum. This little mom and pop shop make everything fresh daily in the morning,…read moreand they don't freeze anything overnight. They also make different flavours as well - but when I got there, only mint chocolate was left. Not that it's bad, but the unique flavours were all sold out for the day. I was determined to come back the next day, but the sweet owner still gave me a cone on the house! I did request for a peanut butter toffee with maple syrup and bacon, and he did follow through! The next day, he had a tub of PB&T ice cream and drizzled my cup with syrup and bacon bits. Only £2/1scoop, £3 for 3 scoops. So cheap and so good.

My friends and I all got milkshakes that were made out of their homemade ice cream. We talked to the owner who happened to be our server about the restaurant and he was so proud to say that they made their own ice cream "the old fashioned way". He really took pride in his cafe and you could taste it in the food as well. The sandwiches were simple yet very flavorful and presented beautifully. One odd thing they did here was serve Pringles with the salads. I thought it was cute and they added some crunch to the meal. Definitely a great place to grab lunch, tea or dessert, La Cremeria is a welcome change from the usual ho hum pubs that you find in smaller English towns.
