i had the pleasure of volunteering at the country animal haven for a few weeks while being bored…read moreand unemployed in madison this winter. this place is an amazing no-kill, non-profit animal shelter. they provide a safe place for cats that are still waiting to find the perfect home. run completely by volunteers, this place is very well-kept, clean and organized. the cats have pretty much free run of the house and barn -- and only a few are kept in cages (the young kittens and the sick/ill-tempered). it is nice to see so many cats in one place with the freedom to roam as they please. also, i was amazed to see cats that got along so well with each other. the location is a bit off the beaten path, but it's well worth the visit. there are plenty of cats waiting to be adopted. also, i believe some of them are brought to petsmart and mounds to be showcased for adoption. in addition, if you have free time, lend a hand. volunteers are always appreciated! :)

These are volunteers who make it their mission to care for these animals. We try to get in a few times a year to help out. My wife and I recently had an approved application to adopt. We had inquired about a dog that was…read moreavailable for adoption. Contacting the foster family was extremely difficult. My wife finally got ahold of the volunteer family after several attempts and we set up a meet and greet with our pups at our home. They said she was from a breeding situation and had some difficulty when people touch her head, but she was a loving dog. When they arrived at our home the two volunteers didn't seem to want us to touch her. The younger of the two was interacting with the dog, but they kept her on a short leash and away from us as much as possible. As of they didn't want us to interact with her or wanted us to adopt her based on sight alone. When the dog did come up to us she was very loving and would like our face and try to sit in our laps, but they kept her on a short leash and away from us as much as possible. That is also when the history of the dog changed. That she jumps fences, darts to the road when walked and is selective about other dogs. Going to far to say that she attacks her own dogs and would kill cats. When our dogs did come out to meet, the volunteer kept a tight leash and after less than a minute she said her dog was going to attack ours and jerked the leash. Which I did not see, but they had only been in contact for 20 seconds. As reference, I have 5 years experience working and training volunteers as a volunteer manager in a shelter setting on how to conduct meet and greets, education on animal behavior and have conducted numerous meet and greets between adoptable dogs and potential adopters. This includes positive reinforcement training for shelter animals in order to find them forever homes easier. However, in my experience, I feel this was either a case of not wanting to adopt the dog, as they shared their desires to adopt her or poorly trained volunteer staff. As if they were looking for any excuse not to adopt to us, and quickly dismissed any further interaction. They then tried to push us towards another dog they have available on their website that has a known human bite history. They also mentioned other dogs on their website that are currently available for adoption that were "mean". I thought the pup we met was a very sweet girl from what limited interaction the volunteers allowed us, but I feel their mind was made up from the word hello. Then being pushed to other dogs with serious aggression issues made me very wary of wanting to adopt from their organization.

They answered every question we had. $500 for the adoption fee was actually very reasonable, if you consider what they ( all dogs live in foster homes) have to do to feed the dogs, veterinary care, ect. There is also lots of seating outside the fenced park - we chilled for a little bit before getting back in the car/so the humans could take a potty break! Karen was a recommendation to me since we've been interested in bringing a French Bulldog puppy into our home. Karen is not a breeder, but is a middle-person who brings puppies into Illinois from surrounding states. I guess you could consider her a "Puppy Broker". The origin of her puppies from what she told me is they come from out of state breeders and are AKC. She has also been working with these breeders for several years. We scheduled an appointment to meet Karen and the puppy. Karen was friendly and her home was a very tidy environment. The puppy area was spacious, had toys and a puppy bed. Karen answered all our questions. She also takes pride in her clientele, some of whom are public figures that she proudly displays their photos and thank yous. The puppy was adorable! She let us play with him for a while as we asked her questions. Karen gets three stars based on our positive experience with her and our newness to bringing a puppy into our home in this capacity. Neither one of us has ever worked with a Breeder or Middle-person like Karen. The reason we chose not to get a puppy from Karen is we decided to go with an actual Breeder where we could know and understand the lineage better. With Karen not being the breeder, this was something she was unable to provide. If a true breeder is not a deal breaker for you, I encourage you to contact her and see if she is a match for you and your puppy needs.
