I just wrapped up three incredible days in the Hat Creek area, primarily fishing on the Bidwell Ranch property with Wilderness Unlimited, and it was outstanding from start to finish. As always, Corey was an amazing host. He keeps everything running smoothly--clean facilities, well-organized operations, and a welcoming, friendly atmosphere that makes you feel right at home the moment you arrive. It's clear he genuinely cares about the members' experience and takes pride in maintaining the property. The fishing was excellent. Conditions were great, the water was in good shape, and the fishing was great. Whether you're there to unwind, chase quality fish, or just enjoy the outdoors. Took my daughter and I to Wilderness Unlimited's Fly Fishing School up at the Bidwell Ranch in Northern California. 3-days of the ultimate in fly fishing instruction for beginners (which we were) and intermediate anglers. From start to finish, they were thoroughly organized, beginning with a quick start guide they mailed us beforehand, and then 3 days of sunrise to sunset, hands on instruction from well known fly fishermen and women, guidance thru all gear, insect morphology, fish habits, hours of fly rod training and plenty of time on the lakes and streams in one of the most beautiful settings you could imagine! I joined Wilderness Unlimited about a year ago and have been very pleased with the variety of hunting, fishing and camping opportunities and have had many successful and fun trips. I recently had an unexpected situation while quail hunting at a ranch near Murphys where I got lost driving in the fog and ended up having my 4 x 4 truck slide down a steep grassy hillside as if the truck was on black ice. As a result, my truck was stuck and I was unable to safely make it back to one of the well established roads. I called the office and they put me in touch with the property manager, Serge. After explaining the situation, he came up with an effective solution for safely getting my truck out of it's predicament. Due to other factors, he wouldn't be able to help me until the following morning. We met at the property, where Serge and a friend, Gabriel, were able to safely pull the vehicle out and get it back onto solid ground. Their concern and professionalism were greatly appreciated by both myself and my truck, which made it out without a scratch. In the end, my bad decision ended up producing a good story I'll be able to tell for years to come. My family and I have been members of wilderness unlimited since 2017 we have taken both deer and pig on their properties. It's been a great place to teach my three boys how to hunt and enjoy the outdoors. Every time we would make reservations we had no problem getting on the properties we hunt on, never crowded sometimes it felt like we were the only hunters on the property. Firstly, my brother has been a member for years here and anytime he has had any issues, communication has always been great. Manny has always been responsive and fair whenever I've heard them speak on the phone. With that being said, he unfortunately had to call and let them know that we as a family were devastated by wildfires down here in Southern California, Los Angeles. We lost almost all of our hunting gear and camping gear. He explained the situation to Manny and he has been more than helpful in this tough time. I joined WU in July of 2025. I was a little skeptical about joining this organization after reading some of the negative reviews but I wanted to give a shout out to Manny for making the process of joining WU very pleasant and easy. Manny met my wife and I on a Zoom call and his presentation was very professional and polite. No high pressure to join or upselling. After joining, Manny checked back with me to make sure everything was good and that I received all items that he and the office staff mailed out. Since joining, I have booked two trips on WU properties and the office staff that I spoke with (Josh) was both professional and polite. This review is an ode to my pops and WU. WU and hunting has been a part of my life even before I was born. My family, the Alcantar family, have been founding member since March 1st, 1987. Started with my grandpa, then my dad, and now me. My dad, Mario Alcantar Sr, just passed and WU was an essential part of his life and second family. He made so many connections and friends hunting the properties and some pretty damn good game too. WU was such a big part of his life that I can spot that symbol from a mile away and know there's family there. Reasons my dad was so successful with game at this club is due to the connections and I've seen some reviews and I know times change and properties change. The one thing that never changed was the passion my dad had. He would converse with other members and staff at properties and get the low on everything. Then use his own skills to put together and find the game he was hunting. My dad never shy'd away from helping other members with info or even breaking bread at camp. That was always the most fun meeting other members and meeting back at camp for stories and food. That is the most beautiful part of this club. You don't need fancy data or reports. You needed to just help each other out when you're out there and make a friend. My fondest memories with my dad were at properties just me and him sipping on an ice cold diet Dr Pepper. Listening to nature and just being outdoors. I'm grateful my dad was an amazing hunter and he had a skill like no other. I can guarantee the members he came across and made friends with came home with game because of him, or left with an amazing recipe to try from their game. It was sad to make the call to cancel his membership but Manny made the process so easy for me and went out of the way to waive the rest of his membership fees for him. The staff have always been amazing from the office to field. If you're coming here to the reviews looking to sign up, use this as a YOU SHOULD button. It's a private hunting club for a reason, you get to hunt privately and with like minded people on beautiful land. WU has great hunts, great properties, and ultimately great members. Let me start by saying, I really love Wilderness Unlimited and the opportunities the club provides. It cannot be easy to obtain and maintain hunting access to so many properties. My job is taking me across the country, hence I am forced to vacate my membership. Here is my 3-year experience, from May 2020 - May 2023, with Wilderness Unlimited and their properties: In 3 years, I harvested 2 nice Coastal Blacktail bucks, 2 Rio Grande Tom Turkeys, 17 quail, 2 Jack Rabbits, 1 coyote, and caught 2 trophy catfish! They have awesome camp sites, with shade, picnic tables, and a porta potty. It's camping! It works great if you're into actual camping and not glamping! Their properties/camp sites are family friendly, well maintained, and easy to access. Seriously, I cannot recommend joining Wilderness unlimited enough! If an individual would even try to own or gain access to one of these properties the cost would be so immense and expensive that it just wouldn't get done. The best hunting & fishing experience available in California. My wife and I have been members for over 30 years and have harvested many deer, hogs and trout. W.U. will limit the number of hunters on a property at any given time to insure the ultimate wilderness experience and they professionally manage the game population. I have always been able to get a reservation for the desired property. There are just so many great properties to choose from. None of the issues and frustrations of hunting public land. I have found hunting on W.U. property to always be a safe environment with good people in camp. The Land Manager and Patrolmen are all extremely helpful and cordial. Wilderness Unlimited responded to me with a solution to the issue in the short term and with a plan of action for the long term. The situation was admittedly not good for all involved, however the issues have been addressed and now it's onward and upward. I want to be fair with an update on my previous review; it was difficult to have confidence then based on what I perceived as lack of diligence. However, WU has since acknowledged the circumstances, demonstrated some humility, and we've smoothed out the wrinkles and are looking ahead to the future. Business is easy when everything is perfect, but when bumps are in the road organizations and people alike get tested. I'm confident and satisfied that all will be well moving forward. read more

Great club, excellent care and awesome staff. Can't say enough great things about WU. I have been a full member for years and understand the importance they place on providing safe hunting opportunities on their properties with respect to their sign up protocol/regulations. My brother, an avid archer, is also an active member of the club and enjoys the hunting opportunities without the crowds as well. My brother recently went on a solo outing on one of their properties that did not have cell reception. Due to some miscommunication with his family prior to leaving, he did not arrive home for dinner when they thought he was due. I was able to get in touch with WU staff after hours. Even though they had verified that my brother was scheduled to hunt into the next day within their computer sign up system--Sergio Ruiz from the WU lands department didn't hesitate to have a staff personnel drive up to the property in the middle of the night just to check. Indeed my brother was there and safe; the extra effort by WU staff was totally unnecessary. However, it was a big relief for the family to know this (even though it was due to my brother's lack of proper communication). WU not only cares about providing great hunt opportunities for everyone, but they also put in the extra effort to try and ensure the safety and well being for all involved (as much as possible given that things in the wild can be unpredictable). read more

After trying out various public land hunting options, we signed up with WU in mid-2020 for a family membership -- and it's completely surpassed our expectations. So far, we've been hog hunting in Mendocino and duck hunting at locations around Colusa in the Sacramento River Valley. We've had very little problem getting a reservation for a specific hunting spot. Although sometimes a specific blind isn't available, or a ranch might be booked for an opening weekend, the staff has been really helpful in suggesting alternative spots or days. And having blinds and decoys already in place (which we usually supplement with a couple of spinners and a handful of species-specific versions) makes it relatively straightforward to set up and get in position. Some reviews described issues in getting hold of a property manager, and I can't really comment on that because I never went in that direction. Instead, if I had a question (e.g., guidance on a gate or parking) I'd just call the main number and found the staff to be both accessible and knowledgeable. Overall, I'd say it's a tremendous value -- certainly compared with getting a guide, for example -- and makes it a lot easier to access all the great hunting available in California. Haven't tried their fishing spots yet, but that's mainly been a matter of timing. read more

I got a visit from Mike. He came to interview our family and present the different packages offered by WU. I was expecting a grumpy high-pressure sales guy, but I didn't get any of that from him. He was nice to us. We signed up. A few days later I got a phone call from Manny, he was also very nice. He explained to me more details and seemed concerned with making sure their services fit my needs. This didn't feel like a high-pressure wam-bam, steal my money situation. I told him we were very interested in camping and he didn't sugar coat it or up sell, he laid it out and told us which properties were good for camping in our area and which were not. I have not yet hunted, fished or camped at WU so I can't speak to their lands yet -- but I can speak to the onboarding process. So far I cannot understand where all the negativity is coming from. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that the system is very archaic. Updates are delivered via newsletters and reservation is done via phone calls. For the money, I'd really love to see online reservation and property updates. But that is a small price to pay. I'm excited to check it out. I realize a lot of the negative reviews come from the perspective of hunting, but I'm mostly interested in camp and fish + some light hunting. This will be my last update to this review, as I'll no longer be a member as of soon. I haven't been active of late but I was checking in with a friend, who is still an active member, about this year's waterfowl season. There were two properties around Colusa that were my favorites for duck and goose hunting (Womble Farms and Butte Creek). They were the basis for my previous reviews about good hunting. So I asked how Womble was shooting and found out that Wilderness Unlimited lost Womble, the nearby property (Drumheller) and Butte Creek (a few years back). I also heard that management of WU has admitted that they are having problems with declining membership and there are lots of complaints that as membership dwindles, the best properties are cutting ties with WU and anything that is added is generally very poor hunting. At this point, it sounds like WU is in a death spiral. It's a shame, but such is life in California for hunters. read more

SCAM!!!!!! My husband called to get some information on the club and talked to Mike. My husband wanted to save Mike the trip and just wanted some pricing over the phone but Mike insisted on coming out to the house. From the moment he got in our home it felt like he was a pushy car sales man. He kept telling us, "if you get in the club" and boosted about all the people he has kicked out of, "the club". He then proceeded to make us fill out all these forms. Luckily, before my husband gave him any real information he asked to see the pricing. After giving us the pricing we told him it was too much for us right now but would like to try again in a year when some bills were paid off. His demeanor changed immediately. He got very aggressive and angry. Saying he won't come out again all while filling out his rejection paperwork. I looked up the company afterwards and read the reviews. I am so thankful nothing else came of the meeting with this company. BEWARE!!! read more

Hello reader... chances are if you are reading this you are interested in joining this club. Well first off it's not a scam or a scheme. But it is a business. And ultimately its a good product they are offering. If you are like me, dreaming about hunting private land like all your friends from Instagram or Facebook but don't have a family cabin in the woods. Or wealthy farmer friends that invite you to opening day dove shoots on their safflower fields. Then this is for you. You have a chance to enjoy private lands at a small cost. Compared to owning and tending to your own land. It seems steep but it's really not. Sure you could save a couple hundred by hunting public land while rubbing your elbows with poachers and ducking stray bullets from newbie deer hunters. Spending a few weeks in search of bucks drunk weekend warriors spook on their side by sides. Or you can be like me... save a few, buy into the club and hunt pristine land with only whomever you bring with you that's allowed to tag along. I have friends that are successful ever single year hunting these lands and although I have yet to go out I am confident I will be too. On top of all this WU is made up of conservation scientists who work hand and hand with governing agencies to keep the land a populations in check with your help. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that? Sure there is a system to follow when booking a hunt. And of course if you are a first time user it's going to take some focus to understand it and plan out your trip. That's part of the fun for me. Flipping through the binder after reading the latest magazine looking for days I can take off work to escape while cross referencing maps. It's all part of the fun. But help is just a phone call away. There's a team of people ready to assist you and teach you over the phone how to plan a hunt and better understand the process. So in the end if you are willing to pay a few extra bucks to get away from the crowds and hunt good land then this is the right place. This is a great hunting and fishing club! I have been a member for years, and just like everything else, they have their pro and cons. The pros outweigh the cons by far. I harvested my first dear on a WU property after hunting public land for years. I read the reviews on here, and most of them are not even close to the experience I have had at the club. I get a reservation 99% of the time. But if you think you're going to call on Friday afternoon to hunt Saturday and try and get a popular ranch, that's just not reality. A little planning will ensure you get a ranch and the ranch you want. The reservation system is great, because I don't want to see a lot of other hunters on the ranch in hunting. If I wanted that, I would go hunt public land and never harvest anything. Bottom line, if you like to hunt, this club has really good hunting. If you think your going to walk on a ranch and pick you animal like it a meat market, well that's not the case. It's hunting! Hard hunting! But you will see plenty of game. read more
