Hotel Royal exceeded our expectations…read more We stayed here for one night before our cruise. The service was excellent. Our room was super cute! Very comfy bed, great AC! Bathroom a little small but easy to work with. They had a fridge and coffee maker. In the lobby they have a small room in the back behind the receptionist that has tea, coffee, utensils and other things you may need on your trip! Plus it's a cute area to sit in the morning or while waiting for your Uber. They have plenty of water in the lobby. Bottled and ice water from a large glass dispenser. There are bikes available for use. It's a pretty great location - we were able to walk to really incredible restaurants, and it was super close to our cruise port!!! We highly recommend this place and would book it again on our next Long Beach stay!

The property itself is located in the heart and soul of downtown Long Beach. Our room was cute, cozy, and clean with beautiful hardwood floors. We had a comfy king sized bed and also a sitting area with a couch. Just to name a few of the amenities there was a microwave, mini refrigerator, coffee maker with Starbucks coffee. The bathroom had a shower and it also provided full sized bath and body essentials. They do not have an elevator but we managed to bring our stuff up a flight of stairs with no issues. The guy who was working in the lobby did offer to help us but we declined. Overall we had an amazing experience here and can't wait to return.

However there is some stuff falling apart in the room which was surprising considering the amount we paid. Shuttle service to the cruise terminal was $11/person which we didn't end up opting in for - the person at the front desk (Kevin) was very nice and willing to answer my questions and also offered some suggestions of places to eat. Microwave in the room: super underpowered Beds: OK but too soft - sink a little bit in the middle - sofa bed was way too soft and we slept on the couch itself. Room: wallpaper starting to peel off, carpet needed a deep clean, found a sock under the bed from a previous guest and the door handle to one of the closets had an unknown greasy residue, the room we got was next to the presidential suite which had a connecting door that could extend there - guests in the presidential suite were up chatting at 5:30 in the morning which was OK for us but would annoy others who don't sleep unless it was silent Bathrooms: Makeup mirror was falling off the wall propped up only by the door frame making it unusable, hair dryer was decent, bath tub drained slowly, faucets at the sink over extended and didn't turn off unless you took the time to find the exact correct spot to turn off. The LED lighting strip on the back of the bathroom mirror was coming apart and Mini market downstairs: well stocked with all potential supplies but prices included a convenience up charge as they were almost the same as onboard a cruise ship for snacks and medicine Check-in: room was ready exactly on the dot at 4pm but not earlier - considering the size and popularity of the room it was understandable and they were very accommodating with my kids running around the check in area burning off their energy before we had access The good: mini fridge was available and empty for us to store our food/water bottles, 2 TVs, partial view of the Harbor was amazing (we could see our cruise ship from our room), housekeeping staff were super nice (even when busy), lots of room to move around, super convenient and walking distance to the cruise ship terminal There are 2 playgrounds walking distance to this property: 1) West Harbor Playground across the way from the Battleship Iowa Museum 2) a hidden one (not labeled) on the corner of W 8th St and S Mesa St outside a Senior Citizen's center which had a lot of local kids hanging out

Had a feeling with the chaos at the front desk this was not going to be a good stay. Shower curtain rod looked like it was only staying on through sheer force of will. All furnishings in the room looked old and scuffed. Space to put clothes was rather limited. Several different signs gave different directions as to where ice was, some said odd number floors, others only two floors. Finally just went to front desk and asked where the ice actually was. Very annoying. Conflicting answers about when the shuttle leaves for the cruise terminal. The Crowne Plaza name is synonymous with high end rooms and service. This place was not it.

Our three-night business stay at the San Pedro DoubleTree earns high praise…read more Were there a few minor mechanical and maintenance issues? Sure. But that's not what lingers. What stays with you is how you're treated by the staff. From the moment we requested an early check-in, the front desk team handled details with competence and confidence that signals a well-run operation. The confidence and competence reappeared at the bar and restaurant. The team there struck exactly the right tone across multiple occasions, and the one light meal we had there was indeed satisfying. Michelle at the bar deserves special mention. She's the kind of hospitality professional who makes travelers actually look forward to happy hour. She became the draw for our nightly post-dinner nightcaps. In an era when genuine warmth in hospitality can be hit or miss, this team delivered consistently. That's what earns the fifth star. We will not hesitate to return

The only room available had two queens instead of a king. This means my spouse could starfish in his own bed. No worries there. After being given our room cards, the left elevator had an out of order sign on it. We used the right elevator to go up to our room. The key cards then would not work for us to get into the room. Went back downstairs and when we got down - realized we used the left elevator (out of order?) Got down and told them the key cards were not working and they immediately told us something was wrong with our room and they were upgrading us. It was a strange series of events but it was fine. The rooms are outdated for sure but they'll do. I will say the bathroom set up is strange. The hand towel is on the wall by the toilet away from the sink and door. So you wash your hands and then walk to the opposite wall to dry your hands before turning around to walk out of the bathroom. The wall plugins stopped working near the bed and we had to charge our phones in the bathroom before they randomly started working again. A little sketchy. The weirdest part was the restaurant in the hotel. It was a Tuesday and they handed out a menu stating they were open until 10. I confirmed this on the hotel website. They, however, closed at 9. On top of that, I tried to order two different drinks which they didn't have but had listed on the menu. They did not state what they had available to order in the bar. Another patron tried to order a food item and was told "we don't have half of what is on that menu." We had the cheese curds which were good, but we tried to order one of their three deserts which they didn't have. It was just so strange. Why have menus that do not accurately describe what's available in the kitchen or bar? I will say someone near us ordered a steak salad which looked amazing. Not so sure we will ever return.

Our room was absolutely filthy. There was dust and grime buildup on all of the ledges, stains, crumbs, hair, dust, along the bed frame and in the crevices of the chair. just no attention to detail at all. we did contact the owner and opted to leave and were provided a full refund, but the kind of build up that was in that room was either from a long term stay that wasn't cleaned up properly or just terrible cleaning over and over. side note: wifi signal was not good, bedding was bare minimum and no hand towels or face cloths provided. I'm not looking to trash the owners, I just don't want anyone to be in the same situation we were, having to look for another place last minute after a long day of traveling, I was almost in tears, plus I had to pay way more to stay somewhere else because there weren't a lot of options.

So rather than pay an astronomical fee for the privilege of proximity, I did a quick search of the area. There are plenty of options, but many of them just seemed suspect. The I came across the Varden. Definitely a boutique hotel, but definitely worth checking out. The rooms are typically small with barely room for a bed, a partial desk and a small bathroom area. But the room was extremely clean, the fixtures and bed were new and cool and for one person, really perfect. Particularly since other than sleeping and checking emails, what else do you really need? Well, for starters you need to feel safe. And this place does a great job of securing the facility at night, but you don't feel you're in a bad neighborhood anyway. You also might like to enjoy a welcoming attitude, and the staff and place has plenty of that. The young staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. Being forewarned that the property has 3 levels and no elevator is important, but honestly, it's not a tough climb to floor 3. And as a testament at how great the staff are, they wouldn't take no, and they carried my bags to my 3rd floor room. Since I was there for meetings, I needed to press my clothes, so a call to the front desk resulted in a brand new Iron and Board appearing at my room within minutes. And being welcomed by a reception with snacks, wine and drinks between 5:00 - 7:00 everyday, is just super nice. They also do a continental breakfast from 6:00-9:00 daily. They have a hip space right behind the registration area for these treats so it's easy to walk through on your way in/out of the property. And best of all the price per night was less than 1/2 of what those big chain hotels were charging. And I was less than 4 blocks (and a very nice walk past lots of local stores/restaurants to give me a feel for the area) from the Convention Center. For all these reasons, if you're in Long Beach solo, I would highly recommend you check out the Varden.

Service: pretty slow (fortunately, we were in no rush) 5. Staff: most seem noticeably disgruntled / unmotivated / unhappy 6. Ship walkabout: wonderful / a fascinating time capsule 7. Fantastic artwork / historical photographs on display throughout. 8. Huge ballroom / event rooms / very quaint wedding chapel. 9. Period costumes, decor, memorabilia. 10. Step back in time on a 100-year old grand luxury ocean liner. Tips: 1. Make an advance reservation for restaurants - we saw walk-ins wait almost an hour. 2. Allow at least 2 hours (minimum) to explore the ship after your meal. 3. Lots of stairs between decks / huge ship / lots of walking. 4. Make sure your phone is fully charged - hundreds of photo opps. Summary: We came on a fairly quiet weekday, but still restaurant reservations are highly recommended. The food was top-notch. Will return to eat - a real treat. Dropped a star only because many of the staff seemed somewhat unfriendly, unmotivated, disgruntled. Otherwise, the ship is stunningly beautiful and the experience quite profound.

I will start with the good, the staff is incredibly friendly, accommodating and seems to genuinely understand hospitality. Even when an incident that I will talk about it the bads happened they were accommodating and friendly. Additionally, there are parts of the ship that truly still demonstrate the glamor of a forgotten age in ocean liner history, the small exhibits some furnishings that are touches here that take you back. The food at the chowder house well expensive is quite delicious and both the wait staff and the bartenders are friendly. Now for the bad, vast areas of the ship have been left to the ravages of time. Untouched unfixed unpainted just left to rot. Even surfaces in areas where guests are sure to visit like the bow of the ship, there's unpainted rusted, chipped paint and splintering plywood everywhere. Wow! All three members of my party booked the same class room, what we got were three very different rooms, it felt almost very Goldilocks with one room being too big. One room being too small and one room being just about right. However, my room had mysterious yellow brown wet spots seeping up through the carpet, I discovered this at almost midnight and so had to be moved to another room, the room they moved me to was even smaller than my original room and had a bathroom so small that when I tried to open the door it hit the toilet. And then there's the little matter of temperature control, the rooms themselves have no HVAC, but you can open the portal windows, which would be lovely if not for the fact that there is nearly no airflow at least on the side of the ship where I was, And more than a dozen insects decided that my open windows were an invitation to party in my room. Then given the proximity to the port, because I had my windows open, I was awoken at 6:15 a.m. to the sounds of shipping containers and little bells and alarms. I think this hotel has Great value and great potential but at a price point of over $300 a night putting it well into the luxury category, it needs help. To be totally transparent, I will be coming back here. We only booked one night and there's so much more to the ship. I want to explore and see I want to do the tours. I want to do some of their events including their murder mystery dinner. There's so much here, that I truly do think it's worth experiencing, however, I also think it's worth experiencing with your eyes open to what the experience will be. If you're expecting a luxury hotel with luxury amenities and luxury finishings, you are not getting that here, what you are getting is a view of history that may someday go away so enjoy it while it's here.
