He listened carefully to my request for an unusual hairstyle short at the ears and chin length in back--giving me exactly what I hoped for when I couldn't envision it completely myself. So.. 5 years ago I got the worst haircut of my life and the tears would not stop streaming. After that traumatic incident, I vowed that I would never cut my hair more than half an inch or an inch at a time. Fast forward to now and as my hair grew past my boobies, my neck couldn't take it anymore. I have A LOT of hair, i'm talkin like.. I can't put my hair up in a ponytail unless i use 2 hair ties and even then it becomes loose. I know some of you ladies feel my pain... It would take me nearly an hour to blowdry all my hair, and it never curled. SO ANYWAY. I did my Yelp research and wanted to go somewhere that WAS NOT a $12 HK "salon" , yet I needed a place that would be able to handle my ultra straight Asian hair and the fact that I had a TON of it. Vicky Shen, owner and senior stylist of Wicked Salon, thank you for my new do. It has changed my life. I take shorter showers because I don't need as much time to shampoo and condition, blowdrying my hair is done within 5-10 minutes and my neck is SO MUCH LIGHTER. Vicky took a look at what I wanted, considered my face, my amount of hair, and let me know what would work and how she would have to do it. She WAS NOT pushy at all... And for the record: I have never been one of those ladies who are able to yack away to their hair dressers and make small talk, i'm terrible at it. I usually sit there in stone cold silence. 3.5 stars I'm weak. A good deal lured me in. Wicked Salon should be in L.A. or even NYC, I think this is by far the most priciest salon I've been to in SF thus far. I had a coupon with me so the damage wasn't that bad. Getting a lukewarm greeting, especially for a new client like me, I didn't expect much after that. Also, as customary in other salons, none of the other staff offered me a drink until my colorist came. The ambiance here is very downtown chic and it's relaxing since they don't play loud music. But, this being a review of a hair salon, let's talk about hair. Brandi is GREAT with hair. With 3 years of experience under her belt, she gave me exactly what I asked for. Of course, the consultation process came with suggestions which she was very sweet about, but ultimately we decided on partial highlights with hair tint. This was a good idea since my highlights were becoming more blended and she gave me the definition I needed. Plus the tint enriched my natural hair color (more of a dark chocolate shade) I liked that they use Goldwell products because after the treatment, my hair was once again, silky and soft to the touch. Application of the actual color took longer than my previous experiences at other salons -- Brandi had to do it twice because she didn't like how the first one looked. I'm always thankful for colorists like her who take the time to perfect their craft to make sure the client is satisfied, even if this satisfaction comes at the expense of $195 (tip not included; $115 with coupon) and 3.5 hours at the salon. Vicky did a phenomenal job with my hair. I previously made the mistake of going to a salon where the stylist didn't know how to color Asian hair but that's not the case here. I would give zero stars if I could but it doesn't let you post a rating without one. Terrible salon but only because of Sue. She is the worst. Extremely unprofessional, racist, very rude, has no idea what client service means and treats customers horribly. Very disorganized way of giving appointments and then handling them. On top of that she blames the customers for her mistakes every single time and is always ready to be rude to you and start fighting with you. It almost feels as though you're getting the service done for free. If you respect yourself, your time and your money avoid her and this salon at all costs. My stylist Brandi was able to fit me in super last minute as a hair model for a super chic bob yesterday and I love the way it looks. She's about done with training at Wicked and really knows what she's doing (take a look at picture #20!). Even though I was a hair model, Brandi was really conscientious, listened to my ideas and made sure I was ok with the length and style. The owner, Vicky, was really nice and didn't hover over Brandi the entire time so it made for a really relaxed experience. WORST experience of my life! For real though..I've been a steady client at this salon for close to two years now ,when I just recently had *thee* most hellish encounter EVER! BEWARE:These folks do not take constructive criticism at all. In two years as a dream client,I've only had two minor complaints and the first time was handled with professionalism.This second time I went in for a very partial hi-lite(root touch up). Most people that aren't even stylists know this usually means bleach.The stylist who did my hair at the time,one of the owners,did something to my hair,not sure what exactly,but there was no evidence of a partial hi-lite,if anything my hair looked darker. It wasn't what I wanted,but rather than freak out and make a big deal,I decided to give it a day,to go home and maybe see it under different lighting,before I called back to "complain"and have a re-do. The very next day,I called and left my name and number and no one would return my calls,so I basically felt like I was getting the runaround. Finally, someone called back and scheduled me with Sue so the day of my appointment,I hauled ass to get to my appointment on time,walked in ,Sue never acknowledged me or apologized for running late.NOTHING. You could cut the ugly tension in the air with a knife. She finally finished up with her previous client,when she turns to me with an angry and bitter tone in her voice, & barely mumbles a hello.I asked her point blank if they keep clients files,for each time they come in for a service they can reference back to it,She just looked at me with a stone cold look in her eye.It was then she tried to weasle her way out of doing my hair, and said I wasn't welcome in the salon anymore. So what,I have two minor complaints twice in two years after being a loyal client and now she's trying to scam me out of the salon. I told her if someone in the salon is *not* comfortable doing my hair,please refund my money.I paid $160 +20 tip .And my hair turned out like crap.All I wanted was something so basic.She wouldn't even give half the money back.Talk about shiesty behavior. Then she has the nerve to tell me I'm not welcome back. You're kidding right?.Seriously,Get.Over.Yourself. I hate to give a bad review, but really, I'm with Kelle W. below. I also have curly hair. I got the most horrible haircut of my life here. I want to really emphasize that this was the MOST HORRIBLE. Sue used to cut my hair a long time ago (several salons before wicked), and now I remember why I stopped going to her. Don't get me wrong- Sue may be quite talented; just not with my hair. I have 2 friends who go to her & their hair looks great. It was so ugly. SO UGLY. Everything I said I didn't want in a haircut is what I got. When I left the salon after the cut, I thought that maybe it would look better when I got home & styled it myself. Not the case. Still SO UGLY. I called back a week later to see if I could come in and have her fix it. The receptionist didn't give me a hard time at all; they would totally do it- they just couldn't fit me in when it was convenient for me. I would have to miss work & come during the day. So, basically, I would have to use my hard earned vacation time to come in & correct something SO UGLY that I had paid $100 with tip for. No thanks. read more

After giving it some thought I decided my original 1 star review was not fair to this salon and the people that work there. I'm sure they have many very happy clients and really great stylist. My review was for my one time experience at Wicked Salon. I did have a student stylist who is still a very good hair stylist. The problem was she didn't do what I went in there for. This was not her fault as she was told by someone to do a highlift tint with bleach highlights on top of it. I guess it was to much for my hair. My original review was NEVER intended to come across as a NASTY review as Vicky the owner pointed out in her comment to me. I have been wanting to try this salon out and found an opportunity to when I found an ad on Craigslist looking for hair models. Anyway I got my hair done a few weeks ago by Pricilla and my hair looks great! My hair was a mess when I came in because I got my hair done at the Wak Shack on Haight, and the rocker blonde highlights that I wanted turned out like SH*T. My highlights had no pattern whatsoever. They had a talk with me before I decided to dye my hair back to my natural dark brown color. However, I decided to keep some peek-a-boo hightlights, just because I prefer the edgy look AND because I paid $200 to get it done so I'm not about to give it up yet. It really made me sad to have my hair done all over again. I would totally give this place 5 stars, but when they had the talk with me about how I wanted my hair done, the owner said that my hair looked "TRASHY"........ummmm excuse me? She just totally hurt my feelings... "I'm just going to straight out say it, your hair looks really trashy" ---those were her exact words. I was already traumatized from how my hair turned out from the previous salon and I was hoping to get some help, which was why I came here. You just don't say that kind of stuff when people KNOW they need their hair fixed. I appreciate the honesty...but there were other ways to say it. ok...enough with my story. I YELPED 100! I YELPED 100!! Whooooo! Ehem, on with the review. Well, apparently people who don't like Wicked have not had their hair cut by Elizabeth. I like to say I'm very picky about who touches my hair in other reviews, but I guess I have to admit at this point that I am terrible at actually making appointments. I think I'm more typically a very lucky walk-in customer. I think all my best hair cuts have been spur of the moment walk-ins to cool looking salons. Elizabeth is no exception. Wicked is a tall, narrow building. You walk up to the reception and cutting chairs on the second floor. Then you get your hair washed/processed on the second floor. Not handicapped accessible, but very fun and very "union square." Reception is great, serving you water, tea or coffee while you wait (if you get there early). Elizabeth was really friendly and fun to be around. She gave a great consultation which gave me tons of confidence in what she was going to do to my hair. I asked for a conservative inch off in length and to blend my now grown out blunt bangs with the long layers in the front. I love the result. Cute piecey/choppy layers in the front and a nice clean line in the back. I also love that she is very long hair conscious and didn't chop off anymore than I asked for. Hooray! For $60 a cut, I thought it was very affordable for being smack in the middle of union square. I was also thrilled with the results. However, I have not had any color services done, which seems to be the source of most complaints (monetary and result wise). Even though my hair has been long for the 5+ years I have been at my job, I got tons of complements on my new Elizabeth cut. I've never had anyone notice my trims before! A+ Ms. Elizabeth! I will make my best effort to make an appointment with you in the future. Or maybe I'll get lucky and you are available for a walk-in again! read more

Woohoo! I just had my haircut here by Bleu, who is a blossoming flower. I found his request for a hair model on Craigslist. He needed an a-line bob, and I've been a model for that cut before because my hair is super straight. I mean, Unusually Straight. My hair is so straight, that when I go to the Castro, all the rainbows unbend themselves in the presence of my hair. Srsly. In a way I'm lucky. I can roll out of bed in the morning and I don't even have to brush it. It just stays in one place. On the downside, I could spend hours with a curler and use a full bottle of hair spray, and in a half an hour or less, it would go right back to the way it was. No matter what I do. So, it's important to me to have a nice haircut, because otherwise my hair gets real boring. Bleu pulled it off magically. He really took his time to get all the little details right. He makes me wish I could afford to actually pay to get my hair cut here. You know, this might just inspire me to get a better job, so that I can afford to come here. One little nitpick: At the end, we were kind of running out of time, so (I assume it was Vicky, the lady giving Bleu direction) Vicky came over and finished my bangs for him real quick, to just show him how to do it rather than have him do it himself. She did my bangs like an upside-down smiley face, a frowny face if you will. I have a lil chubby, round face so those sort of bangs kinda "squish" my face. I piped up after having been relatively silent for 3 hours and asked for smiley face bangs. She was like, "UHHH, I really wouldn't recommend that. But I guess we'll do it because she wants it." She then made my bangs sort of a straight line. A compromise, I guess. I didn't complain because you can't really argue too much about a discounted haircut. They look good now, but I will have to fix them myself when they grow out (which will be soon cuz they're pretty long). But you know, I'm not going to dock a star for the 'tude. Because, people, this is not called "I Care About What You Think Salon" or "Cry On My Shoulder And Tell Me About Your Daddy Issues Salon". This is "Wicked Salon". Makes sense, right? read more

I thus bumped by review up to 3 stars and will update my review after my haircut Saw a deal for Wicked on Bloomspot for a haircut. I called ahead to make the appointment before buying the deal because I absolutely needed to get in before Saturday because I was attending a wedding (that was the reason for the haircut in the first place). Scheduled an appointment for the Friday at 6pm. On the following Tuesday the receptionist called me saying they had accidentally double scheduled me and needed to move the appt to the Friday after that (a week after my friend's wedding). I understand mistakes happen but 1) they made no effort to try to reschedule me before the wedding I was supposed to attend 2) the woman was really not apologetic and made me feel bad about needing to get in before that saturday (which is why I called in the first place) So one star for the hassle it took me to schedule the apt, buy the deal, call bloomspot to get refunded etc... read more

Great cut and highlights. I got a good deal because of a groupon I had. Plus, the owner ended up giving me a discount since I decided on the spot to get color. She was really nice and spent a good amount of time on me. I could tell that she was really being attentive and careful. She asked me how I wanted to look and how the color should be. She did give me an overall nice cut & color that looked really natural. However, this place is just too pricey for me. I paid about $150 and that was not including my groupon. If they had another promotion, I'd consider going back but I don't think I would pay their regular salon prices. read more

My favorite stylist, Teresa, moved to Wicked Salon just recently. Whatever Teresa does to my hair seems like it was MEANT to happen: I have thick, wavy, unruly hair with about 1,000 little cowlicks all over the place. My natural color is a natural, earthy, dull blond that longs for warming up. Teresa makes me feel like a supermodel, and her cuts are the only styles I've ever been able to replicate (ok, maybe only to 65% of the way to how she would do it herself) when I go to dry my hair the day after she cuts it. I used to have little fits and tantrums trying to style my hair (ask my husband, who would run from the house). But now I am always so happy and confident that I will feel like myself, only better. I cannot recommend her enough. Wicked is a great salon experience: It is super-clean, bright and airy, in a totally convenient location. Things I don't like in other salons that you WON'T find here at Wicked: - loud thumping music - stylists hollering at their clients over loud, thumping music - messiness - no one to greet you while your stylist is finishing up with her last client - no magazines (or only styling/salon biz magazines) - uncomfortable chairs - DRAMA! Wicked has NONE of these, and that makes it a wonderful place to come in and relax while getting your hair cut! read more

Brought a grouupon for $80 or services for $40 and thought I'd get myself another fancy haircut. My asymestric haircut was growing out so I thought I'd get it shaped into something more standard. I got newbie Jeremy and he is a cutie with tattoos and snake-bite piercings (I just thought I'd throw that in). It was a good cut. He was attentive and discussed with me what he thought he could do and in the end I got a $20 credit for the extra. That was pretty sweet. I'm writing a very late review, but here it goes: I first visited this place when I got off work back in August. My hair was looking like a total weed bush, because it had gotten long and puffy. The windy weather had also contributed in the horrible look of my hair. So anyways, I walk up the stairs to go the salon, and I see that it is a really nice place. A small place but spacious at the same time. I was greeted by friendly workers, and did not show any expression of disapproval from my bummed out hair. I asked the lady at the front desk with the blond hair if they took walk-ins, and she said yes. My wait only took 5 minutes, and I was set up to get my hair rinsed. After holding off a conversation with the lady who washed my hair (I forgot your name I'm sorry), and talking about college parties stuff like that I was seated at one of the stations. Stephanie was the lady who cut my hair, and I must say that she did an awesome job. She did not rush through the process, and was calm. I walked out loving my new hair do. Now almost 5 months after, I will be going back to get my hair cut again before the holiday. A definite place to invest your money in if you want accurate hairstyling and good service. read more

The girl really knows hair, and I wouldn't trust mine with anyone else. She's done haircuts and does an amazing blowout. I chose Wicked after checking out their reviews here and on Citysearch. To be honest I'd been growing my hair out for the past year and it was starting to look as if squirrels were living it---pouf city! I came in nervously clutching my soy chocolate chai latte and immediately started to relax in the calm, clutter-free but feminine environment. After changing in to a flattering black smock, I tentatively told Sue (one of the owners) that I thought perhaps I was ready for "something exciting like edgy bangs." She decided to cut my hair dry after washing it and doing a deep conditioning treatment. Then she started cutting... and cutting... and cutting. I had to remove my glasses for the experience and since I'm practically blind I couldn't really tell how it was going. I knew Sue's hair looked fabulous so I just kept an encouraging smile plastered on my face throughout. When she was finished she handed me my specs, I put them on, and was blown away. Sue had found my inner cool. This is only the second time I've had one of those moments that you always want to have when you go to a hair salon--you know that dream haircut that suits you perfectly? Your hair holy grail. I immediately booked a color appointment for this coming Friday--I want to get the same shade of eggplant steaks that Sue sports. She's my new hair guru. read more

Although this salon is undoubtedly pricey, you get what you pay for. After walking up a flight of wooden stairs, you enter a clean, white room where a few well-placed, lively orchids peep out at you. The salon's entrance is fairly casual - you amble up to the desk and they direct you, and, as is mandated by the classy salon atmosphere, they offer you tea or coffee. You'll likely then "talk about hair." In my case, I proposed two suggestions. The first was to keep my hair long and clean it up a bit; the other was to go short and fashionable. Although I am confident that had I pushed a certain look, I would have walked out with the cut I asked for, I really appreciated Vickie's consultation. After a quick glance at my hair, she understood that I rarely do anything but wash it; occasionally, maybe, I blow-dry or apply a little product. She appreciated how I regularly treat my hair and used that to construct the perfect cut for me. I had my hair washed by a woman other than Vickie. It felt more like a head massage than a wash - this was partially dictated by the comfortable basin. And, finally, the cut. Vickie spent a good deal of time - perhaps 40 minutes - cutting my hair. She chatted with me neither too much nor too little. The haircut she gave me suits me perfectly. The experience was enjoyable. I'm sure I'll go back a few months from now - even if it does mean shelling out another $80. read more

Stephanie has cut my hair for over a year now, and she's done a better job than anyone I've ever gone to, ever. I have curly hair and don't like it cut like I'm in the Marines, but I also hate looking like I have a 'fro. She figured out how to make my hair look good when I walked out of the salon until 6 weeks later (I'm too lazy to go more often) when I have to go again. I'm pretty surprised by some of the negative reviews here. I was a salon hopper for many years - never finding a place that made me consistently happy with my hair. I've been going to Vicky at Wicked for 3+ years now for cut and color and she has never gone wrong. She is meticulous, has great style and judgement and can pretty much do any style requested (I've brought in celeb pictures before). Once, my mom had completely fried her hair at another salon to the point where she was wearing a wig. Vicky fit her in for an emergency hair session and somehow made her hair look healthy and normal again. It was actually pretty miraculous. The staff at the salon has always been very friendly and professional in my experience. It is higher-end pricing but the experience is worth it and IMO you will be hard-pressed to find a better master of cut and color than Vicky in SF! read more

I was walking to Union Square when I happened to see Wicked, and decided to go for a consultation. I had an overgrown pixie back then, and wanted someone to give it an interesting shape. Viki looked at my hair and we chatted for a good 15 minutes wherein she even told me I could just let me hair grow out. After that we decided to make it look more defined and piece-y! She had a slot available just then and really took her time cutting my hair. I specifically loved how she understood I didn't want to use any styling products and just preferred a wash and go kind of cut. The end result was really really cute pixie. I loved the haircut, just that it is a steep price for a haircut. However, I'd definitely go back when I want a change of style! read more

Excellent, friendly service and Jess was awesome with both cut and color. For once a stylist didn't have to ask me where I part my hair (figured it out himself!) and he was a fantastic finisher which is so important to me. Didn't hand me over to an assistant to give me a sub-par blow out which irks me to no end. I enjoyed sitting in the upstairs window, people watching those walking along Grant St., sipping my green tea (loose leaf no cheap bags) and flipping through plenty of current magazines while Jess covered my head w/ foils. I wasn't feeling great and I've lost my voice for the most part so it was nice to just relax and not feel like I had to chit chat. Jess was very professional and focused on my hair. He seemed to be a perfectionist which is what we all want, right?! My only complaint was that I came in with a Bloomspot deal in which I was to get $160 worth of services for $80 and I ended up spending another $90 on top of the $80 so it wasn't as great of a deal as I was expecting. When I called to book my appt I requested a Jr stylist which it says charge $110 for partial highlight and $60 for cut, so I figured my Bloomspot coupon would cover it all and I'd just have to leave a tip. Jess must be a senior stylist because my total came to $215 for a partial highlight and cut. I'm guessing I may have been charged a little extra for low-lights and because I have an insane amount of hair...who knows. I never really get the full breakdown of services. I should. That said, I'm happy I ended up with Jess and the older I get the more I feel it becomes evident that you really do get what you pay for. I definitely recommend this salon and Jess! read more

I LOVE Wicked Salon. So much. So much. I love the dimension and size of the salon, the beautiful and welcoming reception-man, the hardwood floors and cheerful-chic feeling that floats here. I would probably come here twice a week if I could... and that's saying a lot because I tend to get pretty dang bored while highlights get higher under the heaters. Usually, nothing can pull me out of my boredom-zone... Except for Jason Moran coloring my hair. He has an amazing eye for finding the small, or large changes that allow you to be yourself (read: hotter-self). I have followed him from around the city since moving here....and i'd probably follow him to another city. There isn't any reason to go anyone else in San Francisco. I've been to pretty much every fancy-pants salon in the city. Wicked Salon is my home. Jason's skill and charm make highlights, lowlights and full color a joy. I have never loved my hair as much. This last visit I was able to see 2 other girls that had just been colored with Jason. One went cool blond-er, the other went for a full red and they looked beautiful. He's incredible. If you ever wish you had someone in your life that could tell you what color you REALLY REALLY look best in, Jason is that person. Likewise, I will never go anywhere else to get my haircut. So far, I have tried Sue, Vicki, and Jess at Wicked for trims and more drastic moves. Again, it is very rare to find an amazing color and cut in one place. I've always had my hair colored in one spot and cut in another. Not anymore. This last cut, Vicki gave me piecey layers and used a wax spray on my hair. Very Jennifer Aniston post-romp, but very do-able (ha) for a day or night out in the city. Then, she curled my hair for my concert plans later! Very considerate...very. I love it here. Sorry. I just got my hair cut and I LOVE it (see photo #21)! I came in as a hair model with Brandi and she did a fantastic job finding out what I liked and disliked about my current hair. She came in just under the two hours she thought it would take, and only needed direction from the owner towards the end with some finishing work. I appreciated the pleasant chit chat and the comfy chair. She's a great stylist, and she's still looking for hair models so if you're interested in a short cut (bob, A-line, graduated, etc.) definitely contact her! read more
